feeding 2 to 3 cups purina dog chow they look great and less poop to pick up
Hi Perry! The best I have used is the Victor which I am feeding now. 3 1/2 to 4 1/4 cups depending on the size of hound and how hard you are hunting. No big claims or games here the stuff is the best I have ever used. We are paying between 35 and 38 for a 40 pound bag. Call if you want to talk. Good Hunting! Ron Jackson
victor
Jus curious to o know what the protein/fat content is in that victor feed your talkin bout?
I got a 40 lb dog that eats 3 cups a day but thats 1/3 more than you talking about. I would say maybe she could get away with 2 cups of a really good food and be fine. No ribs showing for sure. Just a small built dog.

lol i was looking for the poodle pic.
All my dogs eat 2 cups (measuring cups) of food a day except the 8 month old. She gets more. Here is a pic of my 43lb female on 2 cups of Loyall dog food. Most of my dogs are between 40-50lbs...

My dogs are between 50 and 75 lbs and I tried the 2 cup a day thing and within 2 weeks they were skin and bones. It takes 4 to 4.5 for my dogs and I don't notice a difference between dog chow or any of the 50 dollar bags as far as the dog holding its weight.

Holding a dog at a particular weight is a pretty simple act even for the most rookie of dogmen. Some extra carbs, some more water and bingo, you have a dog that "holds" weight. Determining the performance value of that extra weight is an entirely different matter. I don't mind an extra 3-4 pounds but anything more is a waste and will hurt your performance. My dog will burn 2-3 pounds hunting every night. Most will be water weight. If you don't recognize a difference between dog chow and a better quality feed, I would suggest that you watch your dog between drops/trees and notice how quick his respiratory system goes back to normal, provided he is within that 3-4 pounds of ideal weight for elevated performance. He can start the next drop much harder if he is back to his ideal respiratory point. If he is blowing out and foaming all over, he will go down hill quickly and do nothing more than trot and put one foot in front of the other. You can't look at a dog and tell what it is being fed, but you can look at a dog and tell who is going to heat up quicker and stay hot longer, especially if the dog is fed for comfort and not performance.

Even the most novice reader could comprehend that I said nothing about performance, I was talking about dogs that are not even getting hunted.

I tried Purina Pro Performance 2 cups a day with dogs not getting hunted and within no time ribs were showing, next I tried Diamond Elite 2 cups a day. Same result, to keep a dog at a reasonable weight I would have to up the feed to the same amount as dog chow. That is with unlimited supply of water.

different
every dog is diff. just give him what he needs some require a lot more than others just like people and livestock . if you cant see he is fat or skinny you prob dont need a dog
Smallest amount I have ever been able to feed while not hunting and still keep a dog looking good and coat shiny was the Pro Plan Performance. Molly would do good on around 3 to 3 1/2 cups a day. When I was hunting her multiple nights a week she needed around 4 cups to stay looking good and going strong.
With Dog Chow or any of the other low end feeds I have to feed 4 or more cups a day to keep one in good shape.

The point is all the people saying if you feed pro performance or diamond elite all you have to feed is 2 cups a day, yea maybe a 40 lb dog.

Not the best pic I'll try to find a better one. She is on Victor, Hi Pro Plus formula. If I feed more than 2 cups a day she gets heavy.

Perry, my dogs are between 55 and 85 pounds. I feed 3 dogs slightly veried amounts. Yes you can hold weight with about any feed but if you are hunting a dog that that really gets it on that is where I noticed the difference as compared to the purina dog chow, hi standard and others. Victor out performed them this last season when I was putting my Piazon female in the woods alot.
My bad, didn't know you fed for comfort. I haven't done that in almost 20 years. I would guess a pan of any old junk would work, the more grain the cheaper you could get by with.

VA Bluedag
I feed Victor 30/20 to the 18 month old and I feed 24/18 I think it is to the older less hunted dogs.

I guess all of you know that hounds come in all different sizes and require different amounts of food right? 2 cups for one will work 2 cups for another will starve it to death.

I've not seen victor dog food around here. Sounds like its a close comparison to black gold. I've switched to CMF 22/16 . Its a meat based food for around $21-22 a bag. So far I'm happy with it.
I visited a kennel one time and all the dogs were extremely overweight. I asked the man how much and what are you feeding these dogs. He told me one cup twice a day! He was feeding one large drink cup he was shocked when i showed him what a true one cup measuring cup looked like.
