HTX hunts!!!!!

I'm really starting to like these hunts way better than the night hunts for several reasons.
-It proves your dog is a coon dog because he/she has to tree the coon by itself..
-No ME TOO dogs get credit..
-I also really like the rules they are very simple.
-don't have to worry about hunting with mean/ill dogs.

I hope you don't think a dog is a coon dog simply because it can tree a coon by its self.

Maybe I don't understand... Your dog is not a coondog just because it trees coon by itself?

I figure if a dog can tree a coon alone it is a coon dog. A dog that can tree a coon with help only... Is not a coondog to me. It is half a coon dog.

I agree with this.

I have a question I hope someone can answer. If I enter a HTX in another state do I need an out of state license or is it like a comp hunt where you wouldn't have to.

I'm not saying that it isn't a coondog. Obviously a coondog can tree a coon by its self but there is a lot of stuff that a dog can do between being turned loose and sitting under a coon. Those are the things that separate a coondog form just a dog that can tree a coon. If you don't know the difference then I cant explain it to you.

here's the link to the hunt test info:

http://www.ukcdogs.com/WebSite.nsf/...s/CoonHuntTests

they are a lot of fun.
& good practice for me as an inexperienced handler to learn to call my dog treed :-)

building my confidence while giving my old dog a chance to
get out & hunt.

A COON dog can tree a coon any given night no matter what the weather is like. Won't run any kind of trash. And can move a cold track and turn it into a hot track and then tree the coon. A good coon dog will tree coons not trees. A good one is easy to handle in the woods.

No Jason I don't. My second post might have made my opinion a little clearer.

I feel I am pretty versed on the difference, and I think a coondog CAN be a "coondog" even by himself. To me there is absolutely no difference. We are out to tree raccoons.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.I am sure you have heard that one.Well so is "a coondog".A few examples....An old man with crippled up knees likes to turn "Jed" loose in a two acre patch, have him a cup of coffee and if jed don't find a coon there he comes in and gets in the front seat and heads to the next patch.Meanwhile,Joe competition hunter would stomp jeds guts in for not looking for the next patch of timber.Jed had treed 150 coon for the old man but is from a cross that is not known for going deep. The old man and his other coffee drinking buddys sure think, cause jed don't tree unless he has a coon, that jed is a sure nuff coondog.
Now Joe competition hunter has his stemwinder that likes to be by himself, and "will go as far as he needs to" to find a coon.Dump stemwinder with a cast or alone and watch him peel away from those other babbling idiots before they even hit the timber. The other dogs tree slick 100 yards in the timber. As the cast is walking away from the slick Joe says,"listen!"."Strike and tree stemwinder!" the others are leash locked, gotta walk 3/4 of a mile down the creek.Stemwinder has ricky looking down.Old man with jed couldn't have walked that first 1/4 mile, besides jed wouldn't have gone that deep without being struck in the first place.
Both are COONDOGS,different types, but both do what their owners want them to do,show me the Cooony.Different strokes.

I think these hunts proves that your dog can tree a coon and is a coon dog in my opinion. In night hunts a me to dog can get credit and become a nite champion.

I hope that you aren't trying to disagree with me in your post because I agree with you. I like both types of dogs and if any of you coon hunt long enough you are going to find out that what you want a dog to do will change over time. I'm sure the old man in your example at one time in his life liked a dog that would get deep and get it done. The other guy will one day wont a dog that will hunt with him. It all changes with time.

BUT my original post was simply stating that just because a dog can tree a coon by its self doesn't make it a coon dog. I got pups here that can tree their own coon but they got a long way to go to be a coon dog.

My opinion of a coondog has never changed.
I've always been lazy. I've always wanted him to tree the first coon he comes to.
It's my job to put him in coon , it's his job to tree them. If I do my part , he better do his.

Now , in these hunt tests , they have an hour to tree a coon WITHOUT making more than 2 mistakes.
If a dog can do that , he's probably some kind of coondog.
Might be hot-nosed , might be a fighter , but I'll bet he's "some" kind of coondog.
In a comp hunt , a dog has to have at least 4 mistakes before he can minus out. Not so in a hunt test.

I will never understand why the non-competition hunters think the competition hunters want a dog to run by coon.

htx hunts

this is another good way to prove your dog can tree coon by itself. and a dog that can tree a coon by itself is a coondog to me. thats the bottom line can it tree a coon.

I DISAGREE JUST BECAUSE A DOG CAN TREE A COON DOESNT MAKE IT A COON DOG IN MY OPINON, I HAVE OWNED DOGS THAT WOULD TREE COON WERE THEY COON DOGS ? NOT IN MY KENNEL

Right but the dog has to pass 3 hunts to get the HTX title. So the dog has to be a coon dog to pass 3 test to earn the title. Or some what of a coon dog. My female passed her first htx test this Saturday. Now she needs to pass 2 more.
