Grand American and parvo outbreak

Several good dogs have been lost to parvo over the past couple of weeks. Something needs to be done at these shows that allow people to come in with a string of dogs on a 6 inch chain that haven't been vacinated, feed or taken very well care of. We have some very dear friends that have lost two beautiful hounds and a third one may not make it through the night. Another friend lost 5 puppies. When their vet was told of the conditions and dogs at Orangeburg he basically said that is where it started. The vet also called a vet in South Carolina and it seems this is a new strain of parvo or one that most shots do not protect against. Why do people not have to prove that their dogs have had their vaccinations and have been taken care of. We are some of the lucky ones, so far. We revaccinated our dogs several days before the show because of the deplorable conditions the year before when the entire grounds smelled like a sewer. I don't believe I am the only one that feels this way. These animals were put in our posession to take care of and we have tried and done all we knew to do. We need help from UKC and AKC to make sure hundreds of poor dogs are not brought in by puppy mills to sell unless they can prove they have been vaccinated. I know a lot of money can be made at $20 a pop to get in the gate for the clubs, etc. but people will stop showing if their dogs are going to drop over dead after they've spent hundreds of dollars trying to save them. PLEASE HELP US. Our dogs are not just dogs, they are part of our families.

I think you may have answerd your own question. If its a new strain and most shots wont take care of it then who is to say that the dogs got parvo from anothers dog that hadnt had its shots.

I know of one 9 month old that died the following Monday or Tuesday, then followed by another pup.

I thought it was outrageous to charge $20 to park. We did not have to pay since we were showing, but $20 to park???? Talk about inflation - last year $2 this year $20!

But you're right something needs to be done. There is always talk about certain types of people not being allowed, but I've never seen any enforcement.

Not sure what the answer is !!!!!!!

Not really sure what the answer is but I also know of three seperate familes that all live miles apart in different states that lost dogs to this Parvo strain from Grand American. It is really sad to see this and the people who lost the dogs are well known dog owners and breeders and it is a shame for this to happen this way. We were lucky and our dogs were not affected by any of this but I had three within close range to 1 that died and on that was saved.

I know that things are not as bad as they were a few years ago with the dog traders but still not good for the rest of us. I guess that is a risk we take going anywhere there are other dogs. We just have to be extra careful.

However I hope the vets are able to get something going that will take care of the new strain and i hope it doesnt come this way.

I can't stand puppy mills and if I know of any I report all of them. I know we pay alot now for these trials and I know others like myself give there own shots but I guess if we have to I would like to see shot records must be provided at the hunts from a vet.. I hate to see it come to this but I care about my hounds..

I parked across the road for free and was closer than most of the people that paid $20. I guess common sense has to take over at some point. If the conditions were so "deplorable" last year, why come back this year?

Posted by LMBEDDINGFIELD on 01-30-2008 08:31 PM:

They were charging $20.00 to anyone that parked on the inside the gates. They tried to charge the show people and did get some of them to pay the $20.00. The people that were selling anything and wanted on the inside had to pay $20.00. The breed barn people could not even drive around to unload the trucks to the front of the barn they had to do it from behind and had very limited parking area and had to haul all there stuff a distance to their spots.

The common form of Parvo has a ten-day incubation period from the time of exposure to the first signs of symptoms. Did the vet say anything in regard to this strain having a shorter incubation period? I'm reading that dogs who were exposed on Friday, Sat or Sun were dead by Mon & Tues? I could have misunderstood.

I'm sorry to hear of the losses.

From everything I have heard it was really quick. Within a few days of leaving Orangeburg. The ones of know of it was within a few days.

Sounds like a bad deal I have lost 1 or 2 dogs from parvo when I was younger I usualy buy the shots myself from Farm King cause when i go to the vet I end up getting way over charged cause they do things i dont want them to do and stick me with a big bill.Sounds like a lot of dogs have died in this deal I have never been to a hunt with a lot of dogs I guess it must spread like plague or something. If you cant affoard the vet you can buy the shots for around 7 or 8 dollars.I guess i better be doing that myself this week.

Posted by wi.dogs on 01-30-2008 09:37 PM:

Does anyone have the # of the vet. in S.C. heading that way with dogs would like to know if there is vac. for the parvo strain down there.

I can't help but think this pup was exposed 9 days prior to when you actually took him out. We can carry parvo into our kennels on our feet - having been where other dogs run and not slipping our boots off before entering our own kennels. It's an insidious thing, parvo is. Even the neighborhood dog that runs loose and pees on your mailbox post can cause you to carry it in and not even know it.

I would also be wondering about the vaccinations you diligently gave your pup in good faith. If they are mishandled somewhere along the way to your supplier, and allowed to reach room temperature, they could be no good by the time you get them - even though the expiration date is good.

I heardThe Times and Democrat Paper had a nice article
in it with parking prices and so on. It cost $2.00 to park and
$20.00 to show entry fee. We had all our shots updated and
didn't have any problems. Why is it that people who take 6+ dogs without shots to a public event to make a quick $ try to start something?

i have never in my 40 yrs hunting seen Parvo before this 7 mth old pup came down with Parvo. this was the first time i have ever seen this Parvo. i cleaned up afterwards and had problems with the next liter until i became aquainted with it and found out how to cure it. i have no idea where i first got it. i always take care to give shots on time while still chilled
