Dogs shot in Eastern Kentucky by State Trooper

Some of you may have already read this on the Treeing Walker classifieds. I know all of us coonhunters like to tease each other concerning our preference or color of the dogs we hunt. But all that aside, I know you guys care about this situation. Please read this post, and thanks in advance.

Let me start by thanking you for taking the time to read this post. A very good friend of mine, who is a pleasure hunter, had some bad, bad luck this weekend. He was hunting his 2 Walker hounds, here where we live in Eastern Kentucky, one of which was a super nice dog, a true, blue coondog, and lost them. I won't drag this out, so here's the end of the story. When he finally tracked his dogs, later the next day, he tracked them just up a holler past a Kentucky State Troopers' home. The trooper came out, and was very short with him, wanting to know what he was doing there. When he told him he tracked his dogs to there, the cop told him his dogs were dead, and asked him if he wanted his tracking collars, and shocking collar. The cop tossed him the collars in a plastic bag. When questioned further, he asked my friend why he didn't come to his dogs the night before, when they were treed. He said they were keeping him awake, so he walked up the mountain to the dogs on a tree, and admitted that he shot both of them. Come to find out, apparently the cop didn't even own the property where the dogs were treed. We are not letting this slide, and we need the help of our fellow coonhunters to push this issue as far as we can take it. The male dog that was so good, was also a family pet. All the coonhunters in this area are furious, and we need all the help we can get to do something. We are trying to take all the right courses of action. Again, if it takes money to get some justice, we plan to do all we can to help him make it happen, and ask for your help. I will keep everyone posted. If you're interested in this situation, or helping us out, please follow it on the Treeing Walker classifieds page. I will be posting this on all the different breed classified pages, but it will just be too hard to respond on each one. Please help us by keeping this post at the top your list. Thank you and God Bless.
P. S. If any of you are hunting your dogs in or near Letcher County, Kentucky, please be very careful.

cruelty to animals

anyway you look at it, if we as hunters let this get by, next time it might be the hunter that gets shot not the dogs. humane society, anything dealing with animals rights contact them, also contact the Kentucky Houndsman Ass.

Court.

This needs to be on the news, papers, and everything that can be thought of. Once this gets made public, this guy will be in lot trouble and thats exactly what he deserves.

We had a dog shot last year. The animal shelter/humane society here blamed us. She told me that people like us were personally reasonable for the pet over-population (the dog was a male, but never ran loose except when hunting). She thought it was rediculous that the breed registries will not allow an altered animal to show and laughed at me when I said our HOUND was a show dog also. She asked what he was doing running around then if he was a shooow dog (she drawled with that sarcastic grin...).

The in-Humane Society here is no help. Hopefully KY is better. Sure hope word gets out about that, at the very least the owner should be compensated for the dogs and the trooper should loose his job.

Keep us updated and let us know if you need anything.

Well,

I just passed your post on to our local news crews. I don't believe that part of KY is in our viewing area though so they may do nothing about it. Worth a try though!

Is ther any possible way you could get the land owner where the dogs were shot to charge the cop with trespassing.I don't know how Ky laws read, but just a thought. The way I see it is if this guy is being paid with tax payers money to protect them that money should be put to use to prosecute this guy to the highest level possible.Just because you have a badge does not give the right to do what ever you want.I hope justice is served and I hope you go as far as you have to.

Bad cop

Im sorry to have to say this but as much bad press as we dog handlers and hunters get, we probably wouldent get much simpothy from the media, or any one else, lets face it folks the woods are getting smaller and smaller

in the average Joes eyes " Non Houndsman" we are the bad guys , not really but thats how a lot of folks feel about a man wandering around in the dark with a light
thankfuly i live in a comunity that knows what a coon hunter is and knows what its all about, but things are getting so much tighter as fare as hunting territorys and Good old fashon Good nabors

The guys dog who was shot lives about 5 minutes from me, and last night while talking to the game warden he hadn't heard anything about this. He is over like 20 counties and no one had contacted him. He said that someone should contact him. He is the main sargaent and his name is Doug Vaughn.

well first of all the sorry SOB should lose his job... because im pretty sure it is a felony offense for removing the tracking devices from a hunting hound... then you should find a good lawyer and put his A$$ in jail with some of the people that he has put in there... i really hate to hear about things like this... its amazing how stupid people can really be... i wish you the best of luck... prosecute the sorry guy to the full extent !!!!!

Been doing some checking and don't guarantee my info to be correct but this is what I found out.
The troopers name is Adam Hall. He's now telling that he shot the dogs because they were messing with his chickens.
Rumor has it that he hasn't been back in active duty long. Heard he's been on mental leave for six months for threatening to kill his wife.
From what I understand, in the state of Kentucky, to get any legal action, the dog must have a Kennel tag or an ownership tag on the dogs collar. Hope thesr boys had theirs tagged so they can hang the bast***.
Knowing some of these ole eastern Kentucky boys if I was the trooper the first thing I would do is MOVE.

We are from Whitesburg where at in Letcher county did this happen at. No Iam not related to Adam Hall

Posted by yadkinriver on 04-04-2008 12:42 AM:

I was told but not sure if I remember correctly. Seems like they said the Grassy Creek area.
Bradley, if you coon hunt I don't blame you for moving to Indiana. Those hills in Letcher county are a little too steep for an old man. They made me happy to get home to the hills and hollars here in Yadkin county.

THERE

IS NOT A GAME WORDEN OVER 20 COUNTYS IN KY YOU ARE WRONG,

Posted by Bradley E. Hall on 04-04-2008 01:50 AM:

Let me rephrase myself, all my family is from Letcher County, they spread out from Whitesburg, Jenkings, Fleming Neon, Blackey and yes I have coon hunted Pine Mountain and it would make a Hoosier quit coon hunting. Down there in them sticks it takes 30 minutes just to walk to a tree if they are way up on the mountain. My dad grew up on Pine Creek in Mayking. Dad came to Danville Indiana in 1964, I was born and raised here but go down "HOME" a couple a times a year. The reason I said we are from Letcher county I was implying my family is from there. Does anybody know what town this was in?

No you are wrong my friend. Doug is the sarg. that is over alot counties. Each county has a couple of game wardens but he is over a great big chunk of eastern Kentucky. 20 counties give or take a few! I am in the process of getting a job under him right now.
