Kennel Question

I’m looking into redoing my setup. I currently have dogs on the chain with blue barrels buried in the hill side (using the ground as insulation, cooler in the summer warmer in the winter). This setup works but I have enough hounds that it would make it easier on me if I setup a kennel with 4x8ft or so runs for each dog. I’ve tossed around several different ideas on what to use for a floor and I believe concrete is the best route to go but I don’t want it to be permanent. We’ve had a lot of rain here recently and i rode by a local baseball field and noticed how well it drained and it got me thinking about building a kennel similar to how they did the infield. I have almost decided to build it like I’m gonna pour a slab, make my forms, level it with gravel, and then just put a few inches of sand on top. My question is has anybody else tried sand? Did it drain as well as I believe it will? Did it hold a noticeable amount of odor from urine? Any negative impacts from keeping a dog on sand? I clean up solids every day as it is and I know it will be easier to clean in a smaller run, just a few things I’m unsure of. If anybody has tried it I’d love to hear from ya!

mine are on concrete. They do just fine on it. Im afraid you may get them digging if you put them on sand. That could end up a mess for you. I would recommend the cement. Mine have been cement for 20 years with no problem.

I built mine above ground with DuraSlat chicken house flooring. Absolutely love it. It's on skids so I move it every month or so. Send me your phone number and I will send you a picture. Cleanest set up I've ever had.

Tom

I have the same set up as you, the only thing I don't like about it is when they spill or drop food it's gone through the floor. Especially a young dog. I'm sure I'm building a big fat healthy mouse population.

I put an about 2X2 piece of Advantac under the feeder if one dribbles the feed. Also used an old car mat. Either works well.
