Question on Coon Parallasis

Is there any treatment, herb or vitamin you know of that would help a dog with coon parallasis? Any information of how to treat it would be
appreciated.
Thanks

some vets put the dog on a steroid like predisone to keep a secondary infection from setting in while he is trying to heal up

We just had one of our 4 year old ntch plott gyps come off of having coondog paralysis. Steroids and time is the only thing you can do for one. She couldn't move anything except her neck and tail for 25 days. She was also bred at the time all this was going on. After 20-25 days she began to be able to move around a little. We made a sling for her to stand up in and she began putting more and more weight on her feet and getting her balance back. We just began hunting her again like 2 weeks ago. Its a long drawn out process. feeding and watering and cleaning them. If this had been a lesser dog I'm not sure the time and effort would have been put into her lol.

I just had a 2 year old redbone recover from coonhound paralysis. most vets dont have a clue- many have never seen a case of it. I kept him on my heated porch in a plastic kiddie pool full of hay and carried him in and out several times a day. He was unable to walk for over 5+ weeks, and it took over 2 months til I could hunt him.
I had to give him amoxicillin because he got bladder infections from laying there. Go to ALLIVET.com. get amoxicillin for fish( no prescription), it comes in 250 and 500 mg capsules. I gave my dog 500mg twice a day.
He is almost 100% again, and treeing plenty of coons in the cold weather here.

Good luck- I hope yours recovers like mine did. Make sure to keep your hound rolled from side to side so its joints dont get to stiff from not moving around, and stretch his legs a few times a day

The only treatment for Coondog paralysis is supportive care - IF they get a secondary infection of some sort I'm sure you could give antibiotics, but they are not needed right off the bat. Most people don't give steroids anymore, as I think it's been shown to not make much of a difference in recovery time either way. Obviously if the dog goes into respiratory distress, it's gonna need to get to a vet. If you absolutely can't get it to eat and drink, it may need IV fluids.

Ours was down for about 6 weeks, we had good luck taking her out to let her sit in the sun, turning her frequently so she didn't get "bedsores" and keeping her clean. She's as good as she ever was (she was 2 at the time, she is 9 now).

BOTTOM LINE: Keep 'em clean, comfortable, and in good spirits if possible. MOST cases resolve spontaneously but it can take several weeks.

Merck has a little write up under Acute Idiopathic Polyradiculoneuritis:
