How to get my hound to quit coming up short?

This dog I just bought was showing me about 50 percent of the coons she treeed with the leaves on the rest I wasnt for sure cause of the leaves. Now that the leaves are coming off I belive she coming up short. Like tonite I turned her lose a long a coon field she went around the field and hammered on a tree. As I was walking in I could see a coon on down the eage of the field about 20 yards from her tree. Sure enough her tree was slick. I have seen her do this twice this same way. When I let her know she did wrong she just soiled up and stayed by my side. Just wondering what I could do to break her of this. She 5 year old. Thanks for any advice.

Try to lead her around the tree and get her to figure out for herself the track went on.

Yeah, I would try this. It could be a lot of things...was this dog previously hunted a lot in woods that didn't get hunted??? Often in "fresh" woods where not much coon hunting with hounds takes place the coons will go up and not "tap" trees. This dog may not be used to coons doing this. Taken in woods that get some pressure she don't know to check because she never had to learn it.
I have seen some dogs "blink" a coon. Intentionally miss because they are jealous of other dogs, another dog is face barking or maybe even gun shy. She likes to do her job but it may be her way of avoiding something she don't like.
I also agree with a previous post..."she is what she is", especially at 5 years old...I don't know what you paid for this dog, but I think at some point you have to consider why this dog was really for sale.

Hunt her for 30 days straight. When she pulls up short give her the command not here, and send her on with a switch. Soon you will be able to just calmly tell her not here, and she will get down and move on. I think the main thing though is hard hard hunting.
