6 ring coon
So if in most parts the old saying is the same I reckon you all know this. If a 5 ring Coon is a ground Coon and a 7 ring is a tree Coon, then what's a six ring Coon tail? What's the most rings anyone has ever seen on a Coon tail? Got any neat pics?
I've never heard it. Never paid any attention to how many rings. I probably will now though.

Dunno how accurate the saying is but I have heard it around ky, Indiana and Ohio quite alot. I know for a fact 5 rings on the tail seems to be poor quality hides compared to a seven ring tail Coon. Often times the ones with seven rings have better hides and darker coloring too.
i always thought it had somthing to do with the age of the coon maybe.most ive killed in va have six rings few have seven and never seen a five ring one that i remember.

Never ask a man what kind of dog he has. If he has a hound he'll tell you, if he does not, you don't want to shame him by asking.
Well its funny I read up on this and it just says raccoons have anywhere from five to seven rings on their tails. This whole tread came to fruition because a friend of mine who had been hide hunting with me a few times had heard me say 5 rings is a ground coon and seven is a tree Coon. He called to ask what a six ring Coon was! I said that Coon must be ambidextrious. Well his girlfriend had one that had six rings.someone had given.her as a pet. After researching I'm thinking maybe I have been mis informed and so have other ppl. Maybe there is nothing to this theory that I had passed down to me from previous generations. Maybe I made more of it than need be. I would always just.skin the seven ring.coons and leave the others. In my mind the five ring Coon was of poorer quality. Maybe I just let myself think that its funny I have killed a heap of coons in my life and only ever treed coons with five or seven rings. Never once can I remember a Coon with six. Only exception was a bob tail Coon I shot out with two rings but mostof his tail was missing prolly something tried to eat him or someone was a poor shot.
