I keep my dogs on a chain, and I like to put a table or something about the same height as the tailgate just on the outside of their perimeter so that they don't get wrapped around it. This let's them get used to jumping up to that height. Then I simply load one of my older dogs and the pup will usually follow. If not then I get up in the back of the truck and call them or lure them up with something, but giving them something to jump to on their own makes a big difference. It's like a confidence thing.

i've never trained any of my dogs to kennel. they just learn to do it because they want to go hunting or anywhere else. at first i have to pick them up and push them in. after a while, i open the gate and they fly from the ground and into the box in one motion. afterwards, when i come home, i open the box and they go back into their yard because that's what we always do. i didn't teach them. they just learned the routine.
