Garmin Long Range Ant. for truck?

We want to extend our tracking range and our long range ant for the hand held isn't enough. Does anyone know if the Truck mounted ant. extends tracking range further than the extended range on the hand held?

Also, another redneck thought, is it possible to use a big CB whip and switch the ends so it connects to the hand held to extend the range??????

We live in NH and need more power to track, any help will be greatly appreciated......

You can use a CB antenna my buddy did it!

I can't tell any difference in distance between the long range hand held antenna and the truck mount. If anything the truck mount may track a little farther but not a noticeable difference.

Another thing you might try is getting a yagi antenna and using it. I'm not sure exactly how to do it but there are some old posts on here about how to use a garmin with a yagi.

if you get a truck antenna on the correct freq. for a garmin (155.00 mhz) and put it on top of the truck in the center you will get better range. a cb antenna is in the 27 mhz range so it would be not much diffrent than just sticking a peace of wire on for an antenna it would work but not very good. for an antenna to work it's best it needs to be tuned for the correct freq.

The extended range antenna is the best one that Garmin produces. In regards to using other brand antennas, antennas are typically designed for specific frequency ranges, so be careful with using other antennas. If they're designed for the same frequency range though, then you should be safe.
The Astro system uses the MURS (Multi-Use Radio Service) frequencies which range from 151.82 MHz - 154.60 MHz.
