I feel if I walk to 3 trees in a row after squalling for 10 min with a dim light and don't see anything there probably not there. Theres a old timer at our club that feels giveing these dogs coon all the time is the wrong thing to do. He says the way these dogs are bred anymore they don't need them that often. I hunt about 5-6 nights a week and probably make 15-18 trees a week and thursdays is usely the day I'll give him one to get them ready for the hunts over the weekend. Its also easy on the coon population. Once you knock em down there never going to leave another track. But all dogs are different.

I would never pet them up unless you've already seen that they have the meat!!! Don't want to encourage slick treeing.
Just got back in. Treed on the biggest tree I've seen for a long time. Didn't see the coon. Pretty confident she was right, as she's shown every coon for a while. But, she did not get petted up. I NEVER do that until after I have seen the coon!
Re: Summer Hunting Blues
quote:I wouldnt let it worry you much. I have saw dogs hold tons of pressure that never get coons shot to them out of season and very few in season, just the other night I saw a 8 month old pup split from two older dogs and take pressure that has never saw a coon. Most people just never try it.

Its hard to get them to hold pressure without a little meat from time to time. I feel petting them up will only help so much. [/B]

I've got a 15 month old that hasn't had a coon in 2 months and it hasn't hurt him at all. He has been treeing just as hard now as before.
