as long as he quotes the right standard...maybe ok...but as the rule of thumb goes...his eyes are only ones that count on that day so.....why quote and possibly cause theirself problems later.

Good for that BSJ

A BSJ is NOT a computer. If a BSJ needs to check a technical point, such as something related to color or markings that might give a dog the chance to be:1. a winner; 2. not considered;or 3. disqualified - KUDOS to the BSJ who refers to the rulebook. Nothing wrong with that at all. There are minor faults, major faults and disqualifying faults to consider.
I DO have problem with a BSJ who "grandstands" for spectators by such performances as using a tape measure on width & length of the heads on all dogs as they stand on the bench. If they can't determine PROPORTION with their eyes, it casts doubt upon ability to evlauate according to standards At ALL.

I wouldn't be offended by it in most cases. That would say to me that particular judge is serious about choosing the dog that best meets breed standards. It hasn't happened to me often, but I can think of a couple times my dog got beat by a dog that, to me, didn't meet breed standards as well as mine. I'm not the type to make a fuss about losing, but I sure would have been interested in what the judge thought was better about that other dog those times...
