scoring questions...

heres the situation...

1 dog cast...handler, judge and spectators...the dog holes and after a bit the handler trees the dog...after a minute or so into the 5, the dog quits barking and the 2 gets him...dog was heard digging the whole time.

what happens to the points? just wondering for future reference. the judge deleted the 100 strike points and minused the 125 tree points for not barking (we read the card it does say the dog has to bark during the 2) i thought what the judge did sounded right...but just looking to learn for future reference.


also, say the handler knows the dog is holed or "it just doesnt sound right" judge never brought up the stationary rule, but i treed him because for a half a minute he sounded treed and i was in a hurry to start the 5 to buy more time for the hunt...what happens if the dog is stationary and i didnt want to tree him because i knew he wasnt treed?

dog usually doesnt stay at a hole and can usually be distinguished from hole barks to tree barks, it is my fault for jumping the gun and treeing him when my guts and ears told me something wasnt quite right....just looking for future knowledge on how to handle it properly...

If your dog is showing a hole and not treeing you don't have to tree him. Tell the judge he's in a hole.

I think you know you didn't want to tree him, but why was the strike points deleted? Did you go in and find him in the hole? then they should of been circled. if he went on, strike points should carry on.

so if i know hes holed, i can say he is holed and go in without treeing him and get him off the hole?

what happens after that? turn loose again if theres other dogs tracking? what happens to the strike points in THAT situation??


i didnt wanna tree him but didnt know what else to do....shoulda just opened my mouth and asked but im still learning the night hunt thing...and for a short few seconds i thought maybe he was treed and chewing (dog is a chewer) so i went ahead and started the 5 for the tree time....

after that, we left and re-dropped elsewhere...his head was in the hole when me and the judge walked in...

we didnt know what to do with the strike points because the 2 got him so he was automatically minused 125 tree points for not barking....deleting them sounded fair enough....cant really minus them because he struck and did show the end of the trail....so id imagine circle or delete would be the thing to do....i know if he kept barking it would been circled.....but being he fell silent i dont know the proper way to score the situation...

a little different being a 1 dog cast....but id like to hear things both ways for future reference...

Not sure where someone can say the points should be circled.

Simple fact, you declared your dog treed, and it was not. The two got him and you are minused 125 tree points, and the strike points remain "open". The 8 should be started on him as well, and if he does not open, then those points would be minused as well.

The stationary rule is to be used when the dog is "obviously" treed. In this case it sounds like everyone knew the dog was not treeing, so the judge did the right thing by not running the stationary.
