Flea control

I have used the Bayer Tree and Shrub Insect Control, for the last several years. I am about to run out, and I don't think this is made any more. What are people using for flea control?

This type post is totally legit. It might be best to post it on the main page and/or search "fleas" in prior posts on the subject. I'm pretty much in the same boat as you and trying to decide which way to go from now on.

I don't have any dogs now, but hopefully will again soon. When I used to bear hunt our whole group used 7 dust powder. All you do is get them wet rub it on then let it set a few minutes and then spray it off. It works amazing. We never had any flea problems.

comfortis

Once a month pill that works great.
I buy the one for 100# and up dog and split it in half.
$20 per pill.

Where do you buy the Comfortis? From your vet?

Posted by jkeith on 06-15-2015 06:51 PM:

I've heard it can only be gotten by prescription but a local feed and seed sells it over the counter.
I don't ask how they do it I'm just glad that they do.

I may look into that. I currently have 16 dogs, that will be $160 per month. The Bayer stuff was probably $1.60 per month and worked great.

We use Nexgard by Frontline. I buy my from Canada pet care on the internet it is around $77.00 for 6 months supply, and I buy the up to 120 lbs and split on some dogs.

I used to sprinkle 7 (sevin) dust in their bedding and I also used WD40 ,, spray a streak right down their backbone and watch the fleas run or die .

I used 7 on my tomatoes and the next morning my pigmy goat was dead from eating the tomatoes, I know my dogs chew on their bedding, so use with caution ⚠

you can't beat the comfortis pill but it is on the pricy side use it on our house dog my hounds i keep ceader chips and wash my pens with creolene and also spray it on the ground around my pens

Posted by SwampCreekHound on 06-16-2015 01:11 AM:

I ran out of Bayer last year, but so far this year I have sprayed my dogs and around the pens with dawn dish soap mixed with water. It has worked so far but I am looking for something as well.

If you go to the garden center at wall mart and you can find other stuff just like Bayer with the same ingredient that is in bayer that protects them I have some and it's like amber sol tree and shrub protectant Im not where I can get to it rite now but as I said if you look at the primary ingredient on the bayer bottle and look at what's available now it's the same

Go to 'Do my own pest control' on the internet and order a product called 'Talstar'. It cost about 25.00 dollars for a 16oz bottle with free shipping. It will make from 16 to 32 gallons of mix depending what insects you want to kill. It kills fleas and ticks and is safe to use indoors. Kills about 75 different pest according to the label.

Seresto flea and tick collars. They are pricey, but well worth the money.

If u use any of the products like Bayer, make sure it does not have fertilizer in it. A lot of those products now are insecticides and fertilizer in one.

yep on the permethrin 10% I use it on the dogs as well as the kennels and myself . just mix according to the label for a dip or spray . around the kennels and in the yard I spray the permethrin mixed with MARTIN'S I.G. REGULATOR which is an insect growth regulator that stops the hatching eggs from reaching adult biting stage and reproducing or egg laying thus breaking the cycle as we call it . it is a totally safe product and I have used it on a damp rag to help with flys on puppys as young as two weeks old . I keep a small spray bottle mixed and spray my boots and pant legs before going afield as well .

I have used permethrin 10 for the last year and a half. It has produced good results. I use it as a dip for the dogs and a spray in the kennels. The directions are easy to follow and it is easy to use.

Tractor Supply, small bottle will last about 2 yrs or so, also a good idea to get a spray bottle there as well. I mix about an a half oz to 1 oz to a gallon of water, depending on use. I use it around the house in a pump sprayer, on my pants or whatever I see fit. It works great for ants, spiders, just about any kind of insect so I have found. A small bottle is about 7-8 bucks. Its just the active ingredient in horse fly spray. I think some folks even just put it in a syringe and squirt about 3 cc down a dogs back, I prefer to spray it on, and rub it in on a dogs back, and ears with rubber or latex gloves, it will burn a humans skin a bit in the tender areas. Lasts on a dog about 15 days or so, depends on how wet he gets, then a touch up is needed. It is hard to find in TSC, but all have it.
