Independent or pack dog what do you prefer?

Which do you prefer??

I voted pack because we all know that hounds are a pack animal by nature and trying to change that to make them independent go yonder idiots just to win a cast or two is stupid.

It's tough to beat a dog sitting under a coon by itself these days.


Dogs in the northern states are trained this way due to the coon population, not to win casts!


I'd rather have my dog sitting under a coon 100 yards from the slick treeing gator over there blowing every other dog off the tree!

I`m not sure how to vote because I want a dog independent enough not to pack with a moron but smart enough to pack with a dog that has something going and try to get treed ahead of it.

Unless mine is leading the pack I expect it to get by itself a majority of the time but it needs to have enough ability to show me coons without consistently needing to go a mile to get one alone.

I like an independant dog, but an independant dog that can't tree coons in the pocket in ideal conditions is a cull. I'm not interested in anything that goes for 2 miles to tree a pop up coond, I think that is the difference in a lot of the so-called independant dogs nowadays.

Thanks to the night hunts coonhunters have been brainwashed into the thinking that dogs have to be by themselves, we have forgotten why hounds were bred for in the first place, pretty soon a dog that will tree a coon will be hard to find thanks to the night hunts just like years ago with the beagle hounds

I think this question goes back to what type of hunting you do most often. If I competition hunted 2 nights a week I would want a dog that gets by itself but for pleasure hunting I will take pack dogs every time. There is nothing like hearing the sweet sound of two or three hounds treeing off in the distance. To me hearing the hounds is what this sport is all about, way more important than winning a title on my dog.

Finally a smart man !!!!! I completley agree.. Just because a dog is 100% independent doesnt mean it has to go a mile to get split treed!!! As far as pack hounds go they are NO fun to hunt!!!! If you want something that packs and looks good ldoing it then hunt beagles!!!!! For all you people that say you like youre dog to cover something that has a coon, let me ask you this.. What is more fun when hunting with buddies: having a dog that keeps getting 2nd or 3rd tree or having one that either trees first or split trees and has the coon??

independant is the way you want one, but it does seem the me too dogs seem to win a lot more. just think, 4 dog cast and he me too's with everything there....and the rest won't....guess who has more points and all he did was cover coon dogs all night...it happens more than not....

I want a dog that does both. Independent enough to tree its own coon but will hunt a tree well with others. I do very little comp hunting so being first and first everytime and always alone is not a priority for me. I have a buddy that I have hunted with for the nine years and we have had dogs spilt and to tree together, sometimes his may strike first and mine tree first or vic versa. Maybe one dog is first and first on this tree then a different one the next tree. Over nine years we have hunted several different dogs together some better then others but we always seem to tree our fair share of coon.

Mr. Hack I wish you would quit harrassing me I have done nothing wrong but post my opinion about the style of dog I like and think should be

The true nature of the sport is to measure our dogs against each other. When you have guys sending their buddy into the tree to beat a dog that you just turned loose at the truck away from the same tree does not let you measure your dog's ability against another. Granted, I want a dog that has the natural sense and ability to find a coon on it's own, but, if they strike the same track, win, lose, or draw I want that dog to run the same track and tree the same coon it struck. I hate to see a dog strike in with another dog on the same track then shut it's mouth and tree off in another direction on another track......for the sake of competitive spirit.....

I like an independent dog.... If mine is out there looking terrible, it's all him, and if its out there looking like a world beater, it's doing that by itself too. I'm not saying I want mine split every time, I like dogs to hunt together, but it drives me nuts when a dog hunts differently by itself compared to with other dogs. I like having a dog be the same dog every time you unsnap it, in any situation.

Ya think maybe some people want an independant dog is because most trees are slick and they dont want a dog backing all night? Weather admitted or not this time of year of you dont see a coon it's 98% slick.

Bring a real indenpent dog that has to get by itself up here in January and your in for a long night! 4 feet of snow usually means alot of nights where one track is all the dogs are going to strike. If it doesn`t get first strike and goes looking for another track your in for a long cold night. I think some people mistake an independent dog with one that won`t back a slick tree. I don`t care if he gets beat on track but if he trees there better be a coon in it. If he never gets first tree we`ll be dealing with that problem in a more permanent way.

Should mean, he thinks for himself, with company or without it, i mean just because a hound pulls up treed dosent mean he has to lie with him. if he has half a brain he should know to keep moving until he finds the right tree ........ that is the true Definition of independant, not that he runs a mile just to get away from company, iv had those , no thanks dont want no more lol

I HAVE NOTICED THAT IT IS HARD TO HAVE A HIGH SCORE WALKING AROUND TO 4 DIFFERENT TREES EVERYTIME YOU TURN LOOSE AND THEN EACH HANDLER HAS TO SHINE FOR 10 MINUTES HOPING TO FIND A COON ,THAT BURNS UP ALOT OF HUNT TIME . HARD TO SEE WICH DOG IS BEST , FASTER , SMARTER WHEN THEY GO PAST A DOG TREEIN A COON JUST CAUSE SOMEONE TRAINED IT TO GET BY ITSELF. I HAVE HUNTED WITH A FEW DOGS ADVERTISED FOR STUD THAT I WOULDNT WALK ACROSS THE STREET FOR AND PEOPLE BUY PUPS AND BREED TO THEM . HARD TO UNDERSTAND A DOG THAT WILL PASS A DOG TREEIN A COON TO GO A HALF MILE AND GRAB A SLICK TREE. INDEPENDANT TO ME MEANS THE DOG TRAILS AND TREES A COON NO MATTER WHAT THE OTHER DOGS DO , NOT DEAF AND STUPID

the ones knocking a true independant hound haven't got a clue of what an independant dog is. an independant dog takes its tracks as they find them regardless of what the other hounds are doing will hunt out the area before they go deep to find a coon are usualy accurate when they tree.
defination of a pack hunting dog is a hound that needs help to track or tree and most times can't track or can't tree and needs help from the rest of the pack to track a coon and put it up a tree.
a true independanthound is bred to work independant from the other hounds its caste with, however will tree with other hounds in the pack it's cast with.
these hounds trained to be independant often will run just to be away from the pack because it was trained that way there not truly independant but will track and tree alone often passing up a lot of coon as they were trained to get deep and lonely often without the meat

I really don't see why all you guys on hear fight about these kind of things. I have been on this UKC website for years but hardly ever speak up but man come on. There is plenty to choose from out there as far as what a person likes to hunt and I would assume that you all buy your own dog food so why try and change someone mind to hunt some thing different. I will say I would like a dog that out hunts,strikes and trees all the dogs every time so they have to play follow the leader.
