Coon Feeders, Dog Kennels, Houses, Den Boxes... Got Pics? Share Yours!

Just thought I would share some pics of some projects and things I've been working on with you guys and gals. My searches on here never yielded many results so I thought I would start a new thread for everyone to see and to share their own projects and ideas with others.

A picture is worth a thousand words so if you have ever built ANYTHING coonhound related and you'd like to share it, I'm sure many here would like to see it including myself. Right here will be the perfect place for it. I know there are a lot of DIY's out there with a lot of great ideas and projects just waiting to be shared. Well here's your chance.

Start posting those pics!

Only thing I would suggest changing on boxes is put a lip on entry door as to help hold bedding in box . Other then that super nice looking stuff ! You sell those boxes ? Thanks for pics

Yes and No. LOL Yes I can build one and sell it but No not exactly like this one.

I've got several months and about $500 a piece just in building materials for these four houses. I could however build some similar to these though. A slightly simpler insulated and treated plywood house like shown in these plans without all the fancy extras like paint, aluminum trim and metal lid would probably cost you around $200.

The reason mine costed so much more was because I just went crazy overboard really. Everything on it is treated even the 2x4's that are completely in the dry. Special screws had to be used. Exterior grade glue. Every single joint wether it be metal or wood has some sort of sealant on it, i.e. caulk, silicon or weatherproof adhesive. Every surface on them even the ones that are hidden or under metal sheeting has been painted with exterior grade paint. The lids are not wood but metal, painted and covered with exterior carpet.

On the flip side of all that at least I know that have a dog house that will last a lifetime and not fall apart on me in 30 or 40 years. I'm planning on getting at least 100 yrs. out of them! LOL

Thanks POTOMAC, it's sort of hard to tell from the picture but the door opening to the dog house actually has about a 3" lip on it. That is 2"x2" angle on the threshold there. It might could have stood to have been a little bit higher but our winter here is pretty mild and I figured most of the shavings should stay piled up in the partitioned off area anyway.

The one thing I do wish that I would have done differently to the construction of these houses is, I would have made the partition divider removable for better air flow in the summertime. I may have to go back and add a closing vent to the far end for that purpose a little later on this summer. These houses are foam insulated so at least that will help to keep them warm in the winter and cooler in the summer.

Doghouse

Jordan they are nice houses! You might not get the cold and snow down there that we do up north but what I would suggest and what I do on my dog houses is that instead of a fixed wall inside between the two inside sections is put tracks on the side and use a slider section so I can remove it in the summer which gives the dog more room inside and not so confined to keep cooler when its hot. By removing the divider you can also use as a whelping box. I would incorporate a 4 in lip on the middle section to keep bedding from spilling out. I also run a lip around the top of the inside about 1/2" down and use a thin piece of plywood as an extra roof insulation inside in winter just to help keep heat in on those cold nights. This plywood section is removed in summer as not needed in warm weather, again you might not get as cold as we do but we keep a minimum of 6 inches off the ground using treated lumber also due to snow.

My dog box

Here's a picture of my dog box that I made all I did was take a medium size wire dog kennel put worm ties and zip ties to reinforce it then I ratchet strapped it to the rack of my four wheeler and put a kennel cover over it to keep them warm and break the wind.

I've been wanting a legit kennel setup every since I started hunting. I've read a lot on the subject and I've seen a lot of nice setups. After talking to several different professional borders/trainers about theirs, I believe that I have finally decided on the type of setup that I'd like to go with. I will be doing a lot of the work myself so as soon as I get some time I will be starting on mine. Hopefully this summer.

I will start with a 40'x80' pole shed closing in part of it in for various different uses. It will have a shop in the front 40'x30' and a small living quarters area in the back half 20'x20', tack shed/feed storage area, grooming and medical examining area also in the other back half 20'x20'. The remaining 40'x30' will be left open under the same roof. I will set my kennels up under this portion running power and water throughout. I will be using 2'' round smooth river rock for the flooring. I will bury some drains under the gravel to help channel the water out of the kennel area and into the septic tank. Most of the people I spoke with recommend the 360 degree view approach as the dogs seemed less stressed and happier overall, barking and hyperness was lessened and trainability was improved. The kennels will be set off the wall by about 10' but will still reap the benefits of it as a wind break.

The floor seems to be the biggest debate for everyone when it comes to building kennels so I'll let you in on my reasoning. The large smooth river rock is easy on a dogs pads, it drains very well, it helps tone and work a dogs feet vs. hard flat surfaces which will cause their feet to flatten out. It also helps keep their nails shorter. Health is my main concern and I don't mind a little extra work cleaning if the other benefits out way the work. I plan on scooping the poop and rock out each day and hosing the rest down. A kennel floor cleaner could be used if needed and would work just as good on rock as it does on concrete or wood. I plan on periodically using a concrete mixer to wash and clean the removed rock and then replace it.

Concrete was an issue for me because #1 cost, #2 the health of the dogs feet. Pads aren't an issue as long as the concrete is smooth finished but the feet flattening out and added maintenance of clipping toe nails are a issue.

A raised wooden deck had some draw backs for me as well. The cost being #1 again and since I will already have a roof in place and will being using 10'x10' kennels a raised deck wouldn't be very economical for me. #2 The wood deck also poses the same issue of the toe nails, pads and feet as the concrete does.

Thank you Zach. Be sure and post some pics if you do. I'm sure you will be happy with the design it works very well! Be warned though the materials can are be pricey. Anything you might be able to pick up for free along the way such as pipe or pvc will be big help. PM me if you like and will give you a materials list of the things I used. Good luck!

Here's one of my feeders, its about 8ft off the ground(to keep the cattle and deer out). They hold about 3-4 hundred lbs of feed and have a place for a trap.
