blowed up?
My pup was treeing coons consitently back when the wether was cold. Since the weather has changed all he wants to do is tree opposums and run track. Dont think hes running junk cause hes not moveing it anywere. Kind of just standing on his head. Do you all beleive a dog can just blow up? This is the 3rd dog out of this stud that has done this. Is it just a spell hes going through or what?

Put him up for a month, maybe two. Give him time to get his head straight, and get his "want to" back.
Don't mean to sound critical, but if you've had three pups that got to a point, then went backwards, it may be the trainer and not breeder that's causing the issues.

It could be the trainer. I had the pup looking great back in the winter. He started treeing opposums bad so i started trien everything to break him off them. The pup is capable of being a great dog cause ive seen him look great. I just beleive its genitics. I could be wrong though. Been wrong before.

Take him to the vet and check his thyroid , and if it is below a 2 , then that's the problem,

Maybe all the possum correcting has this young dog unsure of what he's supposed to do...
Jackson87 ,, now that could be the problem , to much stomping can get one confused

I don't know how hard you are hunting your dog but starting dogs to young and hunting them like a three year old can do more harm than good .that being said if two or three other dogs out of this same cross have done the something I do believe its something in the gene pool causing the problem. not him getting thumped for something he knows he is not suppose to do.

why is he worthless to you if he trees a grinner you said that you don't mind a 5 - 10 deer chase on your 1 post remember????
not sure
so it's a guess some dogs can track better at different times of the year. even when tracking conditions seem ideal it not for some but it is for others. this may or may not help.
I hunt hard. Everynight 3-4 hrs a night on average. Sometimes more sometimes less. Never miss two nights in a role except back in the winter i missed 3 nights one week. Ive hunted him pretty hard all winter long and he was doing great. First strike dog that gets treed by his self when he trees and was real accurate. Here lately hes been missing and treeing more opposums than you could pack. Ive beat him with them. Shocked him off them. Put ammonia on them. Through them in his dog box and hauled him around with them. He just gets worse and worse. Had 2 more the same way. When they started was very accurate and get deep and alone. Both blew up. One started runnin deer and got were he would leave a coon to back a slick treeing dog. The other one went from treeing coons to wanting to run all night. Both of them never got much correction for nothin. So i know those wasnt my fault. But ill ruin one before i walk to all these opposums. Took him to a hunt the other night and he had a 100 on strike and a 100 on tree. Got in their and it was a opposum laying in the bottom of a den. Thats after trien everything under the sun.

Jason he will prolly come out of it.Some strains of hounds do love possums.Ive never had a dog that would mess with a possum so I can't help you there.Id try and hunt him in some decent coon spots cause coon are really on the move right now.I would stop shooting out and beating him with possums cause that is making him worse. Goodluck

I had a real hardheaded possum lovin dog that i was about to quit on.
I live trapped a grinner and set the trap in his kennel right next to his dog box, everytime he even looked at that possum i shocked him on about 3. That possum lived there for about a week, after the first couple days he stayed as far away from that possum as he could.
That dog was trashy all his life but he never barked at another possum.

You know everybody dont like the same traits in a coon dog. I cant stand a me
Too dog or a opposum tree dog. I can deal with a lil deer race as long as he doesnt bust through the country with it and gets off on a coon. Some hate that and i understand that. Some even like them to tree opposums and i can understand that too. I dont gripe about what anyone likes. Im probably as honest as they come when i describe my dogs. I have yet to see a perfect coon hound. Im sure some of you have one out their but i havent ever owned one. Ive seen some i really liked but not a perfect one. The thread wasnt about how to break him. Its about do you beleive a dog can blow up and go backwards insteard of forward? I aint asking for advice cause ive done everything i was told to do and it just messed him up more. Im not saying you guys were wrong. Thats were this thread came in at. Do you beleive a dog can blow up?

Might not be the pup at all. But ive had differnt pups out of the same stud that blowed up own that i know i didnt do nothin to. This one could be my fault. But if i cant stop the opposum problem hes worthless to me.
