Trash Runners

Well I know a lot more now than I did 2 years ago but I'm still a greenhorn and don't claim to be anymore than that. On that note, I'd like to hear how everyone breaks their dogs of running off game, fast game in particular.
Any past experiences or tricks would be appreciated.

Fast Game

Of all the fast game around here deer are the most easy to break a hound off of. Get him ready with a E-collar.Turn your collar down just enough to get his or her attention ether in a dog pen or on a check rope. Make him come when you bump him once you do that find some deer and turn out on them when the race gets going FRY him on high you got about 7 seconds before it shuts off count to 5 then release the button he should be at your feet or under the truck in no time at all. Load him up drive around if you see anymore deer turn out again if he attempts to run FRY again.About twice is a good reminder. Give him a few nights in the woods with an E collar just to be on the safe side. Hogs for me is a little harder you can't just walk up on a hog like you do a deer so I go to a 3 or 4 acer running/training pen for hog dogs and cut him lose in the inclosed running pen where wild hogs are kept for that perpose this cuts down on the gess work as to what he's running FRY him again.

I will never EVER set a dog up to fail. The dog has know ideal you want him to run the deer just so you can fry them. Would you lay candy on a table at eye level in front of a toddler just to smack them when they take it to teach them candy is bad?? You try to put them in the best coon woods you have to have good hunts. If they do bump a deer then use the E-collar. Catch them up and take them home and let them think about it. Works best if you have another dog at home you can take out after you brought the deer burner home.

No offence, River, but in the big woods we have and hard run coons, you had better SEE the deer before you push the button. Yes, you need to set them up to fail, as you say. You need to control the situation as much as possible.

When it's time

I'm not talking about a green pup that runs a deer the first or second you take him to the woods but if you have done your homework and that young has treeded you a coon or two and has some idea what you want,then if he runs a deer Fry him.

The best way to break a dog from running Deer , if you have a dog that likes deer more than coon ,, Get Rid of that dog and move on to the next ,, That's how I break them

I let em run it. If they got what it takes to make the cut they will eventually figure out deer don't climb and coon do. A dog needs to have a preference for being treed as apposed to being on the ground. I don't want them at my feet either.

With all that said, that's not pack hunting either. That's all alone. Roll up the window, take a nap and see if in a few hours theyve dropped that fast game and got treed somewhere. If you got any coon at all, and they got any coondog blood in em, they'll figure it out.

It dang sure ain't a Coondog if it runs crap and falls off on a coon that's for sure. The old timers around here say to put a dummy colar on for a few days to get the dog use to it before using the e collar.

I've attempted to let mine run a deer then fall off on a coon, never happens!!!! I don't think I have ever had it happen. Shocking doesn't work much for me either because bye the time I'm convinced they are on deer, most shockers won't reach them, and they gone. Of course, my dogs suck most of the time. But they can drive one (deer) pretty classy sometimes!

The reason that trash running isn't the problem that it was a few years ago is,we are breeding the track out of our hounds and replacing it with tree happy. When I have a young hound that shows treeing ability and then puts out alot on a deer or a hog,that's our fast game I like to see that it shows they still have some drive left in them. I will not let it go on once I know that it's trash.

If mine barks then it better be a coon ! If not ZAPPPPPP . I don't believe in getting rid of one either just cause it runs trash starting out . You have to let them know what's right and what's wrong !!!! But it's sort of like kids in away , one dad can speak once and it's done . Some can speak to the blue in the face and still mis behave . But then there's some all they gotta do is give them that look and they know to straighten up . So what might work for one might not work for all . Good luck and be consistent in your training .

Also trash usually leads to trouble whether it's for me with the landowner or the highway getting the hound killed . Also leads to a bad night of hunting most time too .

I shocked my pup 3 TIMES on one deer. Next time a fourth and fifth and sixth! He was 9 months old I could have killed every deer he would run them right by me while I was trying to squirrel hunt him. Year old last week and he bumped one again last night for a half mile or so. Gotta love a gamie dog with a huge heart! When he gets broke, he will be a good one.

Trevor, Mayor started running deer and was dang good at it. He would always fall off on a coon. Anyone on here that says he's not a "true coondog" is delusional. He hunts by himself, and gets treed by hisself and will probably help him do more winning that way. I dont want him to but it is what it is. Doesnt mean he isnt a coondog. I bought a E collar, he ran a deer, I fryed him till he cried for his life. His deer running days died down. He hardly ever does it. But he will from time to time but always gets treed

ride the roads until you have a deer run across you or find one close to the road and dump it out so you know for sure what they are on then light them up

I don't know about you guys, but my nose isn't nearly as good as that dog I've got. I can't say for 100% certainly on a nightly basis when I hear him bark if it's a coon, a deer, fox, or whatever, till it's too late That being the case, if I hunt one to the point I'm confident it's trashing regularly, I find a herd of deer and cut Em right down the middle of it. Then I'll go to work on him and be pretty confident I'm not screwing him up further!!!

certain times of year i get out as much as possible in daylight to hunt. will tell you in hurry how trash broke dog is and at times easier to catch em screwing up.
