Hardtime Speck?

Anyone out there hunt any dogs out of Speck or Speck himself? What did you like or dislike about him & his offspring?Any honest/sane replies would be appreciated.I just want to hear about Speck, no hearsay/rumors/lies/scuttlebut about other lines of english dogs. If you've seen it I'd like to hear about it. If you've only heard rumors/lies/hearsay/scuttlebut save it for another thread.Thank you in advance.

Speck female

Had a gyp out of him, hated women, must have been mistreated before I got her..She was a coon dog but left after she tried to attack my wife when she scolded her for barking too much. Don't know what the deal was with that...Speck must have been something special, you still see the Hardtime in alot of English dogs out there.. I think my experience was not typical, just an unusual case..........

I know he was really a Walker dog. But becasue he was not good looking the re-registered him as an English dog.

Exactly what I meant, by Walker standards he was ticked up. But by English standards he was fine. Either way he must have been a good hound.

Hardtime Speck

The man that made him famous told me personally that he was pretty much silent, but he would open in a cornfield sometimes. In the cast where he won the World Championship, he was in 3rd place, way behind Junior, who was in 1st place, when the dogs treed up a 4" tree and Junior and a Dohony Walker couldn't get along and were scratched. Right after he was single registered English, the English Association voted to ban transferring Walkers into to the English breed. There is a fellow who line bred Speck bred dogs very closely who lived 50 miles south of me. I could make comments on the type of dogs he was turning out but some folks would swear I was just a jealous competitor. I will say that I have seen more genetic defects like undershot bites, real rough haired dogs, and plain just butt ugly dogs out of the Speck line than any other line of English I have ever seen. He had some of the best English females bred to him as winning the ARHA World Championship carried alot of prestige in those days. Some of his pups had to be good.

HARDTIME SPECK

I HUNTED WITH SPECK IN THE WORLD HUNT IN PINE BLUFF ARK. IN 1975 . AND HE WAS A WILD TREE DOG THAT JACKED A TREE BAD. I BEAT HIM WITH A STILL MOUTH DOG. A BUDDY HAD A BLUE ENG. OUT OF SPECK AND LITTLE BIRD THAT GR.NT IN NO TIME AT ALL I HUNTED HIM IN ENGLISH DAYS WHEN HE WAS SIX MONTHS OLD AND WINNING THE CAST AND I WD HIM BECAUSE OF A MEAN DOG.

Redtick,

I see some things never change.

Have you ever said one nice thing about a dog that was not from you line of dogs?

I am a Walker man and I do know this,

Speck won the world hunt
Speck has had a bigger influence on the English breed than your whole kennel
He is in the hall of fame

Has any of your dogs done just one of these achievements.

Just once say something nice.

speck granddaughter

i have a female out of stricklands little speck who was out of speck,i have had more consistent coondogs out of the speckline than any other line.several of the english guys around me hunt tightbred speck stock.speck made the english dogs better and anybody who thinks otherwise is not looking at the big picture.Ed bates forgot more about coondogs(not coonhounds)than most of these so called experts will ever know.Just 1 time i would like to see english breeders stick together.I sure wish video makers would switch to another breed all the neg talk is getting old

Speck female

I hunted a female out of speck for my father. Her name was NtCh Bakers Bluejean, squall on track hard chop on tree. could track and tree coon that other dogs could not smell. I got minused a few times from her winding a coon and sitting under it treeing.(see other posts)-always a coon -sometimes not a tree. anyway Ed Bates was up for a hunt in our area and came over to see my father and we went hunting with jean. Before he left enough money flew and jean went home with ed. I would love to have her back. Looked just like speck and would hit a tree just as fast and hard.

ED Bates

Does anyone have info on Ed ? Is he still around?

Posted by Redtick on 07-10-2003 11:03 PM:

I saw Ed Bates at the PKC World Squirrel Hunt the year before last. He currently hunts Feists in PKC squirrel hunts. Ed is a very nice man but I personally think he had other dogs that did more for the English breed did than Speck did (my opinion). As I said before, Speck was way behind Junior in the World Hunt that he won. And, Ed will tell you he was pretty much silent. As for the Hall of Fame and my kennel, I could go into detail about that, my kennel is based upon generation after generation of Hall of Fame dogs and there is very little Speck in the bloodlines I use, in some dogs, none at all. I like dogs that look like hounds, have a hound's mouth, open on the track, and sound like hounds when they tree (my personal preferance, everyone is entitled to theirs).

Speck threw COONDAWGS !!! They might not have been the best looking things in the world but they could sure get you a coon treed. Most of the ones that I hunted with didn't have alot of mouth but they did have a good nose.It took about 4 generations to get some nice looking hounds.Speck threw just about any and every color in his pups you could think of.

Posted by Redtick on 07-11-2003 01:12 AM:

Gayle, I personally do not think Speck did that much for the English breed as a whole but there are plenty of folks that would argue the other way. Fine, they have a right to their opinion. I do know the lines of English that I am hunting, I have 2 seperate lines and breed for 2 different sets of traits in each line. I advetise the Buddy line as being Junior bred but Buddy was 100% Platte Valley on his mother's side and that side puts more nose in the line than the Junior dogs do. I like my Buddy line to be cold nosed and when I breed that line, I breed for the cold nosed tracking ability as much as the tree dog ability. I see alot of English breeders advertise cold nosed dogs (some of my friends) and I know personally their dogs are not that cold nosed. More like hot nosed. Anyone who puts alot of Speck in their dogs is not breeding for a cold nose. There may be some of the Speck-Little Joe dogs that may have had a decent nose, but almost all Speck bred dogs that I have seen were medium to hot nosed dogs. And, most just had average mouths. And, no one could win very many bench shows with alot of Speck bred dogs.
My lines of English are not perfect but most of them are true to the type of dogs I am trying to breed for. Not all coondogs are the same type of coondogs, not all English strains produce the same type of dogs, and most English folks really do not have a true to type strain of English. (Just my opinion)

I have a male dog that has 5 shots of Speck in him and he is the real deal. The ruffer the tracking the better. This dog will flat get in the country and get treed. I have seen him tree many a coon that other dogs had no clue that it was there. This dog is also reproducing some outstanding dogs.Big bawl mouth and a very good chop mouth tree dog, also split trees about 75% of the time.I believe Hardtime Speck has done a huge amount for the English breed.

I have hunted with a few Speck bred dogs, and the ones I did hunt with were, sure 'nuff COON DAWGS! I will have to say there are some wild looking ones out of him though! We have got a litter of some HEAVY bred Speck pups on the ground right now, and they all look like just like Speck except for one beautiful blue female.

John Ferrari-

You can put my vote down for Ed Bates as the LifeTime Achievement Award.
