Garmin Saves Dogs Life Again!!!!!!!

After last night I will guarantee I will not turn a dog loose without one ever again.

I was handling my buddies dog in a hunt, and "Lost" her! My Garmin had her treed, but we couldn't hear her at all! When we headed to her she was over 400 yards away. When we git there we were walking all over trying to figure out why it was saying close and the dog was no where to be found! She had dug herself 30+ feet into a sand vein up the riverbank and couldn't be heard until I got down on the waters edge and could hear her barking through the sand! The GARMIN picked her up UNDERGROUND! I got her dug out before she asphyxiated!

Say what you want, but my Garmin saved my buddy's nice females life last night. Without being guided directly on top of her by it she would have never been found!

I found one of mine in the ground one time. Saved her life too but guess what? It was an old Wildlife beep beep I found her with!

Yep but that is more luck. I'll put it this way, you are 100 times more likely to find your dog underground with a Garmin than you are a beep beep.

Why? Simple physics/science.

The deeper they go under ground the weaker the signal is. That means with the old beep beeps you have to be almost on top of them or they are almost to the surface to get a signal at all. (I found one underground with a beep beep too but we were within 100 yards when they went underground and I was able to get close enough to get a faint signal and find them from there).

So that's all well and good if you are close enough to get a signal or happen to know where they are close enough to get there and then get a signal. So if you are much more than a couple hundred yards away when they go underground you just have a lost dog and have to wander around in that general direction and hope you get close enough to get a signal through the ground (around here it's rock so you gotta be within 50 or 100 yards with a beep beep or right directly in front of the mouth of the cave to get a signal of any kind). If you are a quarter mile away then it's gonna be a long several days til you can narrow it down some.

With a Garmin you don't have to know any of that because when it loses them it shows exactly where they were the last time you got a signal, and it shows it continuously. So it will lead you right to the mouth of the cave/sinkhole/creek bank and put you right on top of them where you can find the hole.

That is a huge advantage. Now I break my dogs from treein in the ground cause IMO nothin good can come of it, but if it happens then the Garmin is much more reliable to find them with than any other system (provided you are within range when they do go in the ground).

yup same here and it wasnt luck ,found my female in a river bank with it she was up under the bank about 15 feet and the tracker lead me right to her

what i don't understand is this.... I know the dc30's can be picked up even under ground, but the new dc40's are having trouble picking up because the gps antenna is hanging under the dogs throat. now what kinda sense does this make?

Well it's like this. The laws of physics dictate how well the radio frequencys penetrate soil. Nothing we say or do will change that period.

You are 100 more times better off with a Garmin when a dog goes underground than you are with a beep beep.

As a matter of fact the difference is bigger than the difference of not having a tracker at all and running a beep beep. Sure you CAN find your dogs without a tracker at all. You can drive to the top of the surrounding hills and eventually find them, or you can use a tracker of any type and know where to go.

It's a nobrainer as to which is better.

Of course we had arguements about how Tractors were nothin but trouble and a mule was better.

It's about the same arguement.

They are just that much better plain and simple, and for that particular instance they are as much better as a tractor vs a mule or no tracking system vs a tracking system.

There's just no comparison to being able to walk right to the spot on the map where the dog went in the ground as opposed to hoping to get close enough to get a signal.

Here is a summary of an article on the internet. Just do a google search and you can read about GPS signals for a week.

Summary
The GPS satellite detection sensitivity can be enhanced using highly stable clock with an intelligent circuit board (in the RF Front) and better algorithms (code or programs) in the DSP. Fine tuning the other factors mentioned in this article can further enhance the accuracy of GPS device by way of increasing the GPS sensitivity.

Garmin has a lot of Gov. restrictions on them and I am sure they work in a safe range to stay out of court and in business.
I am also sure they leave a little wiggle room if they need some minor tweaking on their devices.

Well I am speaking of this particular incidence, dogs going in the ground or in some other structure that blocks signal.

The beep beeps have their pluses too.

1. The batteries on the collars don't go dead after 18 hours.

2. If something gets really out of range you might be able to pick up a beep and get a signal as opposed to if they get more than a mile or two away you have to drive around till you pick up the signal with the Garmin (but then when you do it pinpoints them exactly on the map).

3. The hand helds for the beep beeps are more durable. If you fall on the Garmin and a rock you could crack the screen or bust the electronics (though they are pretty durable and I haven't had any trouble they just aren't as durable as the metal quick track box etc).

Mule is better if you never used a tractor.

Reminds me of the farmer who got his first tractor. He crashed it through a fence and into the side of the barn, yelling "WHOA, WHOA, WHOA!!!" the whole time.

It seems like the Garmins greatest detractors are those who do not own one and never have.

I still remember very well how my Dad went on about how worthless my MN10 was when I got it back in 1995.

i luv these garmin post, ive had my wildlife tracker for 8 years has NEVER FAILED ME YET, do i want to get a garmin yes, i want to see if they are what everyone says they are , if it works ill still be keeping my beep beep in my truck with me

Well Jimbo I'm thinking about gettin one but I'm not sure I can run fast enough to keep up with the dogs so I can use it.

I've still got my beep beep..Off course I've not had to use it in 3 years..Maybe it will be worth more when they stop making beep beeps all together..While you may not like it..That day is coming..IF they dont get on board with some kind of gps..

I'm in no way bashing a radio telemetry tracking system. All I am saying is that without the Garmin, Jenny would not have been found. I have never owned an old style tracking system. I borrowed one from a friend before I got my Garmin, because he already had a Garmin. I was just getting a hang of using the gain properly etc. to be able to find a dog that got out of pocket efficiently when I got the money rounded up for a Garmin.

To me the Garmin is much simpler to operate. A compass that tells yardage, and a map that shows roads, railroad tracks, rivers, creeks, and bodies of water. I know my ground I hunt regularly quite well, and I can get to my hounds a LOT easier with it.

I have had dogs out hunt my beep-beep more often than my garmin...Its much easier to find them when you at least know what direction they went.

Come up here and I will show ya.If I dont hear em in about 15 to 20 min. You better be headed somewhere. They are out of hearing. With the garmin. It shows me where they are headed and I head that way. I have got 3 miles with my roof ant. once

People think the telemetry systems are bullet proof . Hunted with one for many a year . Get around big high lines or a regular power line with a short and false readings happen . Get in big draws with lots of fingers and they show where the strongest signal comes from , sometimes not the best or shortest way to a dog . The Garmin system is way better and handier in my opinion . I have the extendable hand held antenna and only used it twice , it gets as good a range or better than a old telemetry system in good working condition . Dont be fooled by the naysayers or people scared of technology. It will save you lots of walking and your dogs life

Ceratainly a Garmin would be a complete waste of money for some coonhunters. It is not something everyone needs. I'm betting Johnny don't need one now and never will.

my dogs ecently went so far under ground the garmin would not pick up as they are run off a satlite.So underground is a no go for a garmin unless they are close to being out of the hole
