Plant Drops Labor Day For Muslim Holiday
More Than Half Of Tyson Plant's Workforce Muslim

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. -- Some workers at a local plant will no longer to be able to
take their Labor Day holiday because of religious reasons.

Workers at the Tyson Foods poultry processing plant in Shelbyville will no
longer have a paid day off on Labor Day but will instead be granted the Muslim
holiday Eid al-Fitr.

According to a news release from the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store
Union, a new five-year contract at the plant included the change to accommodate
Muslim workers at the plant.

Tyson's director of media relations Gary Mickelson said the contract includes
eight paid holidays -- the same number as the old contract.

Eid al-Fitr -- which falls on Oct. 1 this year -- marks the end of Ramadan, the
Muslim holy month of fasting.

Union leaders said implementing the holiday was important for the nearly 700
Muslims, many of them Somalis, who work at the plant that employs a total of
1,200 people.

Nineteen-year plant veteran William Pentecost doesn’t agree with the decision.

"I don’t think it's right. I really don't think it's right," he said.

Tyson company spokeswoman Libby Lawson said by phone that, "This isn't a
religious accommodation, this is a contractual agreement. The majority asked for
it."

The change didn’t bother some workers.

"I think it's fine. I don’t have any problem with it. There's a whole bunch of
them here, so they've got to do something for them," said worker John Smith.

"It shouldn't happen. I mean, I think, we're in America, you're in America, I
think that they should go with our holidays," Pentecost said.

Channel 4's Cynthia Williams could not reach any of the plant’s Muslim workers,
because Channel 4 News' crew was not permitted on the property.

Former employee and Shelbyville resident Anthony Proctor said he thinks what's
happening is wrong.

He said he helped build a special Muslim prayer room that's located inside the
plant and that no other Tyson facility has been that accommodating for any other
religion.

"If we want to go pray, we don’t have one for Christians," he said.

Tyson is headquartered in Arkansas.

Lawson said they consider religious accommodations on a case-by-case basis. She
said that so far, no one has asked for any other type of religious prayer room.

No one at the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union’s regional office
answered phone calls placed by Williams on Friday.

A representative in New York said that no one there knew specifics about the new
contract with the workers, but a person in research told Williams that holidays
aren't usually replaced and are more likely to be added on.

The decision will only apply to workers at the plant who are union members. All
other employees at the plant will still have their normal Labor Day holiday

AN EX COP THAT MOVED TO MY TOWN TOLD ME SOMETHING INTERESTING. THE TOWN WHERE HE MOVED FROM THEY HAD A TYSON PLANT. THE COPS WOULD PLAN A RAID FOR ILLEGAL IMMAGRANTS AT THE PLANT BUT BY DOING SO THEY HAD TO TELL THE PLANT MANAGER ABOUT THE RAID AND THEN THEY WOULD LEAK IT OUT TO THE WORKERS AND ON THAT DAY ABOUT 3/4 OF THE WORKERS WOULDN'T SHOW UP.

I didn't know there was that many Muslim people within 100 miles of Shelbyville little on working at one plant. I only live about 60 miles from there.

I went on to the web-site and found a comment block. I asked the question if their Tennessee plant replaced an American holiday (Labor Day) with a Muslim holiday. IF I get a response I am going to let them know EXACTLY how I feel about an American holiday being replaced like that. (Tyson foods are done in this household)

If it is like the plants around here they cant get enough locally born folks to do the work.
Most plants pay well above Minimum wage with benefits and insurance and they still cant get American born workers to fill the job even though their plants are usually in a area that has PLENTY of people who can work.

I mean, I would rather have labor day off than abu dabi day, but if a plant with 1200 employees had a democratic vote and 700 said that they would rather celebrate abu dabi day , then why not let them? that just means less of those "other people" at the resort when i want to be there!

I agree 100%. We shouldnt be worrying about what a private business allows its workers to call a holiday and what they dont. If enough Americans would get off their rearends and get a job that could this wouldnt even be an issue.
I dont like the idea of a Muslim holiday being acknowledged in America but we ar the ones to blame. BTW, Tyson is a international company.

Let me play Devil'sAdvocate and say that I guarante you if it Was Americans working in Somalia they would have been killed for wanting to do away with a Muslim holiday and replacing it with an American one.

This event was accomplished thru a democracy. A simple majority vote without thought or regard to how it affects those inside the democracy but outside the majority.

America is a democracy. How often do you hear it? How deeply do you believe it? If you believe it, why?

Although I don't hold Reagan with much regard, I have to chuckle knowing he would get a kick out of this one. I imagine, despite what public outcry comes with it, Tyson is smiling behind the scenes on this one too. After all, all an employee has to do is withdraw from the union and they can "still have their normal Labor Day holiday."

Well, unless membership is required.....in which case boycotting all products represented by the union would be more fitting. Tyson didn't replace one holiday with another. The union did.

This is only the beginning. Once Hussein is president and we already have pelosi as majority leader in a few years you will not even know you live in the good old USA. The democratic party loves illegals with hussein and nancy at the top home grown americans dont stand a chance. The republicans are trying to get more drilling going and may have the votes to get it done but Nancy took her ass back to California and will not allow a vote. Her state of California is doing everything they can to help illegals, all backed by the democratic party. This democrat party is not our fathers democrat party. I hope you democrats are as happy in a few years as you are now with what your voting in.

Well, just as in Christianity there are varying beliefs systems... there are very different belief systems in different sects of Islam.

In a very large and broad nutshell though, they believe that Alla (simply they're word for God) sent prophets (men) to relay messages to us. They believe that Abraham's son Ishmael was the son of promise as to where Christians and Jews believe his son Issac was the son of promise. They believe Jesus was one of those prophets.... and they believe the greatest and last prophet sent by Alla was Muhammad. They believe that following the teachings of Muhammad are the way to be united with Alla. It's a performance and rewards system. They have 5 "pillars" that they all agree on that need to be done:

2: Prayer 5 times a day in the direction of Mecca.

3: Payment of the Poor Tax.

So obviously some of the big differences to to Islam and Christianity would be that....They believe Jesus was only a man... Christians believe Jesus is God. They recognize Muhammad as a prophet and his writings as Holy, and Christians don't recognize Muhammad as a prophet and recongize the collective works known as "the Bible" as Holy. And the greatest difference is that they believe the way to please God is through a system of do's and don'ts. Christians believe we can't please God, buy by His mercy He died for us to reconcile the relationship with Him

They teach that at all costs ALL must recognize Muhammad or you are considered an infidel, period. The fanatics say that if you do not, you will be brutally killed. Look it up in the Koran, I have.

Now, in this country, there are many "social" or harmless muslims, kind of like there are many social Christians. The problem will be when they do try to take over America, the social muslims obviously will not fight it. They are simply here to profit from the goods and freedom. It is the fanatical Muslims which are at 25% of the religion that believe in Jihad (holy war) and it is gaining ground in America sadly enough.

There is a book written by one of the leaders of the fanatics that gives details solely on how to take down America. I haven't read it but know if focuses on a 100 year plan to infultrate America from within and bring her to her knees. They intend to place a "dark horse" candidate in office. It should really scare everyone with Barak Obama's heritage and view points. On You Tube, he said it himself. "America is no longer a Christain nation. It is Buddhist, Muslim, Christian, etc" I hear what he is saying, but I "get" what he is saying too. Don't think that he isn't an intelligent man, but also, don't think that he represents a thread of defiance and hatred. His smile doesn't fool me. You cannot have a wife, a preacher and a family heritage that is so full of hate and not have some of it yourself.
