Got one here that is a Gr Ch!

Has half a white eye. It is a point deduct! not a disqualifying fault!

I have a whole kennel full of white eyed dogs, and they are NOT blind....not any more than blue eyed people are blind.

where do they get the white eyes from is it a watch eye or something different? just curious, read something about walkers with watch eyes it said a certain dog put that into them every so often.

oh,well didnt know been around hounds all my life.just dont think that is a good rep.for breeders little to close breeding.take two red ticks and you keep crossing them, then they come white with white eyes.whats next??i will keep my blue dogs they dont come white unless coon knocks it out.

Dean,

Why would this be a reflection on the breeders? The gene for blue eyes is a recessive gene. You can't tell a dog has the gene unless they have a blue eye, or they have pups with a blue eye....

It takes two dogs with the recessive gene to produce a pup with a blue eye..... And all of the blue eyes may be several generations back in the pedigree....that is NOT a reflection on the breeders.

Secondly, eye color is spelled out in most of the breed "standards"....simply by saying standard, that means "most", but not 100%.

As for being a disqualifying fault, that simply is not true...for blueticks, according to what I read, the only disqualifying fault is that the teeth do not meet with the mouth closed, a spayed female, or a male without two decensded testicles.

Quote:

A disqualifying fault is a fault which makes a dog ineligible for placement in a Bench Show. Points are not to be deducted; neither is the dog to be removed from bench. Other than those disqualifying faults listed here and those listed as disqualifying faults by UKC, deviation from standards is to be considered a fault for which points are to be deducted according to the degree of the fault and the emphasis placed on that body part according to the point system. TEETH: front teeth must touch with mouth closed.

If you are a fair and accurate bench show judge you will remember relative importance of the body parts of a dog.

1. Legs and feet
2. Back and loins
3. Chest, ribs, head, shoulders, hindquarters
4. Neck Elbows, stern, coat and color

Two dogs standing in the same class, one dog has a bad foot, and one dog has a blue eye....which one should win?

If the two dogs are in fact equal...(I have never seen a "perfect" one), then your right, the dark eyed dog should win.

But until you've judged some shows, and put your hands on the dogs, it's hard to judge a bench show from across the room.

I wish UKC would require that judges give reasons for placement.

Gracious dude...it's only a saying. Guess I've never really skinned an ugly one and a pretty one to compare.

Put another way...I'd rather have an ugly smart dog than a pretty stupid dog.....

per Bluetick standards:

EYES - Rather large, set wide apart at the stop. Round in shape, and dark brown in color, but not lighter than light brown. Eyelids are tight and close fitting. No excess third eyelid should be apparent. Expression is a typical pleading hound expression, never wild or cowering.

blue is lighter than dark brown...period. standards were put into place for a reason. if you have pups that have the recessive blue eye gene, then they should NOT be bred. that should be fixed and/or sold w/o papers.

and to the person that commented they have never seen a fair show, well you haven't seen me judge. I dont care who is behind the dog, the dog will get judged on it merits (good and bad) the way it should be done.

*clarified which standard*

YOU HAVE ONE GOOD POINT AND SEVERAL NOT SO GOOD. I TO JUDGE THE DOG ON HIS HUNTING ABILITIES. THEN TO BREED STANDARDS. IF I AM GOING TO KEEP A HOUND IT NEEDS TO LOOK GOOD ALSO. I WANT LOOKS AND ABILITY IN MY DOGS. IF YOU DO NOT CARE WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE OR THAT THERE EYES ARE MESSED UP THEN WHY REGISTER THEM? SAVE YOU MONEY AND HUNT GRADE DOGS!! AS FOR CROOKED JUDGES THERE ARE A FEW IN THE SMALLER SHOWS. BUT JUST REMEMBER THE SHOW JUDGE IS JUST ONE OPINION AND EVERYONE HAS ONE.

what I dont understand, and beat me up if you want to, is why would ppl that talk about how poorly certain breeds perform in big events and how "there's no tree in them" want to continue to breed dogs that are against the standards set by ppl that wanted the best of the best to represent their chosen breed?

why keep breeding a blue or wall-eye if its not in the standard? why keep breeding cow-hocked, flat footed dogs if its not in the standard?

its not a standard for show dogs, its a standard for the BREED!!!!

the standards were set by ppl to make sure they were breeding consistently and keeping true to what they felt were the best qualities of the breeds. THEN after years they decided to "I bet my dog looks better than yours" and it was based on the standard.

if you breed for the STANDARD then your dogs will have both looks and brains and can continue to tree for years!!!

ugh!!!

well if you would breed the pretty dogs to the ugly tree dogs then you will have mediocre tree dogs!!! then continue from there. quit looking at looks and look at the STANDARD!!!
