Top Dog.....Big Winner
Just because a dog is a "Big Winner" is he/she a "Top Dog"? I mean does a "Top Dog" have to be a "Big Winner"? Or are all "Big Winners", neccesarily "Top Dogs"?
What do you consider a top dog or a big winner?

Top dog= finishes on top a lot.

Big winning Top Dog= finishes on top of big "hunts"

Doc, I guess that you are right. How can a dog be a Top Dog if no one knows who they are? And how does a dog get "recognized". A Top Dog is not in the eyes of the beholder. A true Top Dog has to be recognized by a majority of the people involved in the sport. If you are the only one that thinks that your dog is the best, then he isn't a "Top Dog". And how does a dog get recognized...not by losing. So, I guess that a Top Dog has to be a Big Winner. You could have the best dog in the world but if no one knows who he/she is then how can he/she be a Top Dog? And how do you know if you have a Top Dog unless you put him/her in competition against the other Top Dogs? And beating all of the dogs in your neighborhood just means that you have the Top Dog in your neighborhood.
Also, you can never be the one to judge whether you have a Top Dog or not. By definition, a Top Dog has to be recognized as such by everyone else.
I knew you had the answer. You missed my point by the eye of the beholder a little bit. No matter what you win and how many hunys you win mosy of the time very few people think that dog is a true top dog. I hunted with a world hunt winner from a different registry a couple times. I thought he would be a top dog he sure did tree a bunch but only seen one coon all night. But it was summertime and the trees were leafy so I probably couldnt find them. I also hunted with a chick one time I cant remember her name exactly she was a grand nite. Im sure you thought she was a top dog. She ran a track and when this old single registered english dog came treed on the hill across from her sje ran a track to her tree just hard as she could. When we got there there was three coons in that tree. But im sure there was only two and that other female ran that track so hard her coon climbed with the other two. She may have just had a bad night I dont know for sure. I wish I could remember her name but I just cant put my Foot on it lol

They are a Top Dog in their own back yard. I guess a lot depends on whose back yard it is. And a whole lot of dogs will be a Top Dog for a couple of years and then just quit. Also some dogs are only at the top of their game when hunted hard while others seem to burn out when you hunt them. Maybe that is why you can't judge a Top Dog on a couple of nights performance. Usually a dog has to have sustained winnings over a period of time or be recognized by a number of individuals. And if a number of top breeders/owners were sitting around talking about how they got smoked, then I would think that dog had done a lot of winning.![]()

What if you draw a TOP DOG and you don't like how he or she operates but everyone else does is it still a TOP DOG ?

Bond, I don't really think that one man's opinion will change whether a Top Dog is a Top Dog or not. If a Top Dog is one that has done a lot of winning against some stiff competition, then looking bad one night or not holding up to your expectations doesn't mean that they aren't still a Top Dog. Just because you don't like their style or how they operate doesn't change the fact that they won all of those hunts.
Now with all of that said.... there are exceptions. "I think" that there are some dogs that have won a lot of hunts but a majority or at least a whole lot of people still don't think that they are a "Top Dog". There are some hunts that some might call "big hunts" while most don't think that they are "big hunts". And there are some handlers that have the reputation (whether fairly deserved or not) of being able to win with a poodle. So "sometimes" you have big debates over whether a dog is actually a Top Dog or not. And some people think that they have a Top Dog because he/she won one big hunt. But that is what makes it exciting.
So, doesn't being a Top Dog actually depend on what a majority of the coonhound community actually think about a dog? Isn't it the dog's reputation and how they come by it that matters?
There are some big winners out there that some of us would beat half to death to get them to stop doing what makes them big winners.
TOP DOG
A good dog winning big with a TOP handler. or give me a top dog winning with 3 to 6 different handlers in all different parts of the country. this shows me that for the most part its the DOG that is TOP and not just the handler IMO
