Strictly Pleasure Hunters!!!!

Looking for some ideas and input from pleasure hunters who have no desire to competition hunt.

If you ONLY pleasure hunt:

Do you belong to a coon club?

What can a coon club do for you?

Pleasure Hunter

Dont belong to a club.

I'd like to see our local clubs put on some buddy hunts so a guy like me that would like to maybe get into the competition side could get familiar with the rules.
I have 3 to 4 younger boys that hunt with me from time to time that would like to see what it is all about but would never go to a sanctioned hunt because of the intimidation factor.

Big coon contest,benefit hunt to give proceeds to a charity.

Hold more HTX hunts!!!!

no i dont belong to a club, and probably never will again. could care less about the hunts, it would be nice for some buddy hunts

i do not competition hunt not to say i wont at some time i belong to a coon club it has introduced me to some great people and has helped me with my dogs by being with people who have far more knowledge in training and different ideas. It has been a huge help . I beleive as coon hunters we have more of a chance to change peoples perspective of coon hunting as a group and being more active with the community as most clubs are.

no to comp huntin not to say i wont try once in awhile
dont belong to a club not sayin i wouldnt join one though

coon huntin club are a good useful tool for coon hunters it can help us meet more folks like ourselves that love coonin
yur gonna have good folks and bad folks no matter what just deal it

or be like me i dont really like large crowds so i normally hunt with a couple people i no but i will hunt with anyone at least once

my club has several people that are "JUST PLEASURE HUNTERS" . guys apart of our club are great guys and are always looking to have a fun time

there are several guys that arent apart of the club that trash competition hunts buy say they would come to buddy hunts......


bottom line is , we hold buddy hunts and they never show. always an excuse for everything like.... i dont hunt my hounds with junk....wont hunt them with rough dogs....yada yada and can be rather RUDE. they are just as bad as the guy that hunts competition and never wins.....always excuses.

I do competion hunt but we started having hunt test on our meeting night for the kids and non comp. hunters to get involved. we found that we had no turn out so we started having 1hr AKC hunts on our meeting nights and got a few to come but mainly club members. we do have some non comp. hunters that help guide run the kitchen ect. just seems that comp. hunters or pleasure hunters do their own thing. no matter what you try to do to bring them together.

at one time not long ago, i believe there was/is a club in illinois that has around 40 members. 3-5 are all that comp hunt though.
what brings out the big turnout is the feed they put on when they have meetings. so, based on that i would say to make sure and have good food. lol!!!

I pleasure hunt only. I wont comp hunt for the old reason "I wont hunt my dogs with rough dogs." I did once have a redbone that could hunt with any alligator around and bark every breath while dodging fangs but it isnt worth it. I am also an a-social old bastard so there arent many people I will hunt with and probably vice-versa. We have never had a club around here but I would support one if it existed. I may one day try a comp hunt but not at the moment. Would like to go to a HTX with my hounds and would like to see what a buddy hunt is like as well I would enter a big coon contest.

What if a club held a "Team Hunt"?
Each cast would represent a "team". (2 - 4 dogs)
Each cast hunts two hours - count only coons treed that are seen - no strike or tree points - no minus points - after two hours "teams' return to the clubhouse - "team" that treed the most coons wins.

You have the option to draw the "teams" randomly or choose "teams". The "team" concept sure would eliminate the problems that occur casts.

What do you think? I like the idea of the UKC Hunt Tests myself.

Don't get me wrong we have some way above average pleasure dogs around the house that I would hunt absolutely. It just kills me when people say they won't hunt in hunts or join clubs because people have rough dogs.

I belong to the same club as Dwils. Our club meetings get an average of around 25 members to the meetings and maybe 4 or 5 of those are comp hunters. But in spite of the low number of active comp hunters, our club has hosted 20some nite hunts events about every year for many years now. Our UKC events draw a large number of non-competitors that are there strictly for the food and the fellowship, mostly the fellowship. Other clubs in our area are the same from what I can tell. Columbia City, Silver Lake, these clubs host UKC hunts that are as much social gatherings as anything else. Comp hunting and club membership are not all that intertwined. Those who decline membership in their local clubs because they don't comp hunt are really missing a large part of what it is like to be in this totally disorganized fraternity that is our sport of coonhunting.
I would really hope you all might reconsider joining.

i agree with you 100 percent, i use to comp hunt every weekend and traveled all over every state hunting hunts. i only pleasure hunt now , but i will bet i have one now that i could win with, just dont like the hunts, but im not bad mouthing them either, and this spring i will put him in some just because the breeder wants to title him

when i pay my dues to the club im a member of that also makes me a member of of iowa state coonhunters ass.yhe iowa state coonhunters ass does a lot for us competition hunters & pleasure hunters.thats 1 thing a club does for a pleasure hunter.

I strickly pleasure hunt but

have no problem with those who enjoy scorecard hunts... They are just not my idea of fun..My hounds over the years have been as good or better than those owned by local comp. hunters.. I just have no desire to expose my hounds to some negatives I have no control over, the possibility of fangs, being turned loose near roads I am not aware of, etc. As for me I have judged many casts locally and have had my fill of guys trying to flat out cheat to title a miserable hound and their fussin, fighting and attempts at being intimindating.. Just aggravation I don't want or need. I do help out locally by judging bench shows for free.. We do go to the big coon contests during take season.. I just like enjoying MY dogs and controlling all aspects of how and where they are hunted and what they and I are exposed too. So we do support the local club.. I would love to see HTX hunts, I'd let my dog strut his stuff in front of anyone tree his own coon...

Yeah, I competition hunt !! All Fall and Winter long.. My Blues compete with the local coon.. My Blues win a ton !!! We use and recommend MOONSHINER LIGHTS, Peggs , Ok.

Lol JiM is right. Disorganized. . . But very fun time. Drink coffee. Talk dogs. Go hunting after meeetings. Heck half our old timers show up to our hunts to just have a good time or help out. . . .

Coon clubs are what help strengthen the security of our sport if ya ask me

I do not belong to my local club

I strickly pleasure hunt for many of the reasons already mentioned. I simply wish the best hound entered in a hunt could win each night. Too many people will do what ever it takes to win-just not something I would do to enjoy my hounds and hunting. I would rather go pleasure hunting with anyone and if their dog does better than mine I will be the first to tell them.

For the pleasure hunters who say they'd like more buddy hunts and / or HTX events at the local club,
That's all fine and dandy, just remember all it takes is a club membership and a few folks liked minded as you, and you could easily make these happen at your local club.
Don't expect the 4-5 competition hunters at the club to host these types of events just to earn your membership. Like some have said, they've tried that approach and it didn't work.
There is absolutely no reason why every single club couldn't hold a buddy hunt or HTX event if the pleasure hunters saying that they'd support them would actually take the initiative to conduct them and support them.
One thing I've noticed over the years is that when the club does hold a non-sanctioned event (buddy hunts or simple family oriented club events) the few competition hunters in the club show up, support, and participate, it would be nice to see it go both ways.
I can't get over all the years I belonged to another club and there were 2-3 "strictly pleasure hunting" members always voting to donate money to certain causes, always wanting the club to hold more buddy hunts, and wanting the club to hold some big Christmas party or something. But when it came back to ask them to guide a cast, help in the kitchen, or even work the booth at the County Fair to help sell raffle tickets, those same guys had 100 excuses why they just couldn't make it. These guys were typically retired.
But they never missed a breakfast on the club's tab or the Steak Dinner's the club paid for from funds earned by hosting nite hunts.
I'm tickled to death that I belong to a small club made up of folks who support all the events we hold regardless of the type of event or sanction. Not all competitors, but members that support those efforts, and they don't ask for a bunch of handouts in return.

I go to about 1 hunt a year to remember why i do not go. If the local club had hunts where the winner got nothing but bragging rights so the hunt would be more fun cause winning or losing is not a big deal i would go to them. I have a Grand Night Champion and could do some winning if i went to hunts but even when i win its not fun because of all the bull####. Around here the same dozen or so guys go to all the competition hunts and seem to gang up on the outsider. The only hunt i went to this year i drew a 3 dog cast with 2 buddies and me. On the first tree the dogs were only about 50 yards off the road and were clearly treed seperate and they said they were. When we got to the tree all 3 dogs were there. I found the coon and asked the judge who was getting minused? Both handlers said their dog did not move and neither dog got minused. Nothing i could do. 1 dog was an automatic strike dog but nothing was said and this crap went on all night. I like both men but the competition brings out the bad. I do not know the rules that well anymore, my fault, and this is usually used against me but thats my fault. I like to go to a hunt to have fun, see what kind of dogs others hunt and chit chat. Winning is 2nd to fun and this does not happen at a competition hunt anymore. It did when i was 15 but not know that i am 45

to here some of you guys talk those comp hunts are nothing but cut throat cheats.i havent seen that there are some guys out there like that but not a lot of them.if you know your dog &know the rules its more enjoyable. lack of those 2 things is where most of my bad comp hunt experiances have came from anyway.i do believe we should all belong atleast to our state associations
