curs and hounds in competition

what are the coon hunters views on curs and hounds drawing together in comp. hunts? i hunt leopards and would like to hunt in a big hunt like autumn oaks someday.personally i say let the best dog win,be it hound or cur.

i agree

i think teh curs would be hard to beat.

There are some Curs that would smoke most hounds in any competition. I prefer to hunt my Curs and squirrels and my English Coonhounds on coon but the Curs can tree coons. Why not let the best coondog win?

ill just tell ya men. if the curs start hunting with the hounds. alot of hound hunters will be whinning. now im not saying this because i hunt curs. cause you see i dont. i hunt walkers and english. but i did hunt with a man that hunted curs and his curs dog put a whipping on my dog and she is a nite ch with 3 wins toward grand. this dog impressed me so much i got a pup out of itand you aint seen a young dog with so much grit. well i could go on and on . but let it be know, if the curs draw out with the hounds ill be getting another cur

Posted by Justin Smith on 08-05-2003 12:21 AM:

The curs would be destroyed in areas where the coon aren't right next to the road and few of the curs would be independent enough to pull ahead of the pack instead of covering trees.

Justin Smith, you should have hunted with Sauer's Rex, Mt Cur. When you turned him looose, he would find a coon and tree it. He place 4th at PKC Walker Days one year over about 1400 entries. I have seen other Curs that I would bet on, regardless of the hound they drew out.

Percentage wise , curs are close hunting dogs that wouldn't beat the hounds that often. It must suck for all your breeding to be in vain if you can go out and get a cur that is so much better than you linebred/inbred/trash free hounds ...but I'm not surprised.

Posted by perry on 08-05-2003 02:41 AM:

not really sure what you are trying to say here but the bottom line to me is"does the dog suit the man buying the feed".i own several leopards . i am careful what i hunt with because with nearly no effort i could get them hunting from the tailgate. i do not hunt that way.i do not enjoy tripping over a dog either.most my dogs are rarely seen after being cut loose and rarely open in the next woods.here i patch hunt and walk .rare to get a woods over 30 acres in my area.fence rows are disappearing too.they tend to know which direction i am headed.hunted with some southern leopard fanciers. they blew a whistle when they headed another direction to let their dogs know come this way.

Posted by perry on 08-05-2003 03:15 AM:

oldtimer,a lot of leopards are used for big game. also stephens curs.get a full cry if you get the chance. articles and such on the subject of curs for big game.

Posted by Gray Fox on 08-05-2003 06:17 AM:

Howdy, Perry! Keep those Leopards in the woods, amigo!

Oldtimer, I am one of those who hunts Leopard Curs (only Leopard Curs) and mostly on bear. I am in California. When you say curs, remember that there are several very distinctly different cur breeds. Some are better at squirrel hunting and some are better for big game. The list goes on and on.

Justin, please don't think I am mad or anything, but making
blanket statements about curs as if all the breeds and strains were the same is quite inaccurate. If you think they are, you need to hunt a good bit with some of the different breeds and strains. There are more differences between the different cur breeds than there are between the different hound breeds. I have been hunting dogs since 1949 and have owned, hunted and seen just about all breeds and many crosses. A dog has to be able to move a cold track and put the game in the tree to please me. Come to California and go bear hunting with me and I will show one breed that is very different from what you said. I would be happy to take you along and show you mine on bear.

Justin Smith

As I said earlier, I coonhunt with my English Coonhounds. And I have Dual Grand Champions as good as anyone's. I didn't say Curs beat them, I said Curs could beat your hounds. A top Cur is as good as most of the hot nosed pop up coonhounds alot of folks hunt these days. That is a fact.

people really have little experience with leopards.the general public think they are hot nosed and still.we have a rule and a dog must be open before it can be perm reg and bred.they are also like hounds with a variety of nose ability.the coldest nosed dog i ever hunted with was a leopard.water's black pracer.hunted him in a club hunt one night with 2 blues and a walker.nice dogs. he ran and treed a coon none of them were able to open on.now i realize still dogs are suppose to be scratched in a nite hunt.we all know they get in the hunts and when was the last time anyone saw one scratched for being still? most stephens are open.i have hunted with a few treeing tenn.brindles. they were open.several mt curs i hunted with were open.a couple were fairly cold nosed.i really should not say a whole lot about the other cur breeds til i have more experience with them.i might assume something that is incorrect and i don't want to do that to a whole breed.

Posted by Justin Smith on 08-05-2003 10:43 PM:

I have hunted with several top notch Leopards . These dogs placed high in the world leopard hunts. They did well unless the hounds got deeper and struck before the curs caught up and the ones I hunted with were bad about covering a dog and trying to steal the tree.

I like the cur/hound cross .... they'll beat both parents if it's the right cross.

Posted by Redtick on 08-06-2003 12:49 AM:

Your comment has me confused. How does another dog steal the tree from another dog? If you are talking about me too dogs, the hunts are full of them without the Curs being there. I say"let the best coondog win".

Those curs circle ahead of the hounds trying to grab the tree ahead of them. They will also lock down while another dog is checking the tree or locating , even though they didn't find the tree themselves. Sometimes it works and sometimes they get stung .

Posted by perry on 08-06-2003 02:05 AM:

and a hound won't do this????? worse dog i ever seen for that was a walker.i ain't silly enough to think this is a breed wide trait though.what curs are you hunting with that you see these traits enough to generalize. come go wth me and bring your best hound.lets tree some coons.

Posted by Justin Smith on 08-06-2003 02:36 AM:

I hunted with the leopards , tried a few mountain curs and bmc ..all junk. People say the curs handle better .. if you cut em' loose and they don't find a coon to get under ..it aint handling ...it's just fruitless.

Posted by Redtick on 08-06-2003 12:51 PM:

Justin, there are some good Curs out there. I prefer to coonhunt with hounds but it is not an ability issue, I prefer a hound's mouth and some of my hounds have a better nose. But, for treeing coons quick and easy, it is hard to beat a good Cur. A well trained Cur is harder to find than a well trained hound and those really good hounds don't grow on bushes.

It's funny ..not to long ago a Walker won one of the world squirrel hunts ... now the curs are gonna win the coon hunts .

Justin I have never had the privilege to meet you but would like to give you a little information about a UKC coonhunt. About 1999 UKC had a coonhunt in Michigain where the curs and hounds hunted together in the same cast. The winner got a dog box and a tracking system. I took one of them sorry curdogs up there and hunted with them awesome hounds you keep bragging on. Just thought you might like to know that the dog box has been real nice and I have had to use the tracking system to drive around and find some of these close hunting curs that are fruitless. Also for the record I put this same sorry curdog in three PKC coonhunts in the winter when the snow was on and got into the money twice with plus points. Just think what I could have won if he wasn't hot nosed!

I have owned some really good hound squirrel dogs. I wish they had some of these squirrel money hunts back when I was hunting Old Tania or Country Girl. They could tree the squirrels and both were registered English. I prefer Curs on squirrels these days but again, it is not an ability issue. The main thing I see in this thread is alot of hound people afraid to get beat by a Cur!
