Tree style

I have a hound that is big game bred and when he trees he circles the correct tree looking up about five feet from the tree trunk. Most comp dogs tree with front feet on the tree now a days. My question is this typical for big game hounds to tree like that? He is real accurate and that is why I switched to a big game bred hound and I am totally happy. Off the tree five feet dosnt bother me as I mainly pleasure coon hunt anyway. Thanks for any input.

Treeing

There is not enough room for 15 dogs on a tree . Lots of times 3 or 4 hunt together there is that many or more. Big game dogs are more aggressive than coon dogs. A fight will start if dogs are bumping in each other. I think this is why they don't get up on the tree. After years of breeding these big game dogs you've got dogs that stand off the tree. Plus a dog can see up the tree and see the bear better like you do looking for the coon. I only bear hunt but this is what I always thought.

Oh I see. Thanks for your input. He is definitely not aggressive towards other hounds. In fact I use him as a pup trainer as well as my pack leader. Its always good to hear other peoples opinions and experiences on hounds to get a bigger picture. Thanks Doug.

biggame dogs get bred alot of times also,because of their cold tracking ability ,and game catching ability way before their treestyle. their offspring can lean more to track than tree sometimes as a result.competition coonhunters try to breed for a dog that fits the rules to win the competition hunts. i get diffrent tree styles out of the same litter though.there are a few variables though like doug said alot of dogs will get back so they can watch the bear up there.coondogs are mostly run at night so it isnt like they can see a small bodied animal like a coon up the tree in the dark.most of it is breeding ,but some of it is learned.
