Thinking of getting started

I hunt and trial beagles and love it! Have considered either getting a squirrel dog or coon dog and try that out as well. After a bit of searching around is seems as if curs can do both. How hard is it to train a pup to run both or would it be best to buy a started dog? What does a started dog usually go for??

I would start with a pup. Started dogs tend to go for some money depending on things. Start them on sqs first, then once they get the hang of it roll them on coon. Generally, curs will be better at one or the other. I personally haven't seen one that does just as good on one as the other. Just keep that in mind. Also, some lines are probably better at certain game. Some lines are better for big game, some work better on coons and some are just better at squirrel and some are just good all around.

If I was starting out, I would go with someone close to me and see what works for them and just go sq hunting with them but kick those hounds to the curb lol!

It's not curs only. My feist is a sqch and has a 2nd in a coon hunt. So feist do alright in them coon hunts too. A good feist can get the job done. Curs are great dogs too.
