Virginia: Sussex County Passes Anti-Hunting Ordinance
Virginia: Sussex County Passes Anti-Hunting Ordinance

The Sussex County Board of Supervisors recently passed a “noise ordinance” with Sunday hunting in its crosshairs. This new ordinance unfairly targets firearms more heavily than any other device that produces loud sound, specifically on Sundays between the hours of 12:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
These misguided restrictions make it clear that the reduction of noise is not the intent of this new ordinance, but instead is an attempt by the Sussex County Supervisors to make hunting and other forms of recreational shooting virtually impossible on Sundays. This ordinance is in direct conflict with the Virginia General Assembly’s intent in passing House Bill 1237 (allowing Sunday hunting on private property with written permission) this year, and unfairly targets hunters and shooters over other recreational activities.
The Sussex County Board of Supervisors will meet again this Thursday, May 15, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. While it is the NRA’s understanding that this ordinance will not be on the agenda for this meeting, there will be time provided for public comment. Please attend this meeting and urge the Board of Supervisors to reconsider this misguided anti-hunting measure. Also, using the contact information provided below, please also call AND e-mail all five Sussex County Supervisors and urge them to strike the anti-hunting language from the ordinance and to honor the intent of the state legislature when they passed Sunday hunting into law. Please stay tuned for further details, as there will be a separate district meeting to discuss anticipated modifications to the noise ordinance at a later date. Your NRA-ILA will keep you informed as this matter progresses.

noise
I would ask them how much noise is to much, can you run a law mower, chain saw and can you ride a Harley.
Thanks for the contact info Hokieman. I live in Southampton co., but hunt in Sussex. A member of the club I hunt in is on the board of Supervisors for Sussex, and he let me know a couple weeks ago about this ordinance that has already passed, and invited me to voice my opinion at the next hearing. The root of this ordinance allegedly started because the Sussex co. law enforcement couldn't enforce disturbing the peace with car stereos and house parties. I say allegedly. Now the wording of the ordinance has leaked over to firearms or any loud noises on Sunday? I am not sure how isolating Saturday night or during the day on Sunday is supposed to help the law enforcement enforce a noice ordinance the rest of the week. The man I was referring to that went to the previous meeting said the sheriff of Sussex was there and he gave his word is people were shooting guns on their own property they wouldn't get a ticket. This is the email I got pertaining to this two weeks ago, the wording may have changed since then.
From Sussex Board of Supervisors
This is what subsection 5. says now:
5. Explosive, fireworks and similar devices; discharge of firearms on Sundays. Using or firing any fireworks without a fireworks permit, explosives or similar devices which create impulsive sound between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. in such a manner as to permit sound to be heard inside the confines of the dwelling unit, house or apartment of another person. In addition to any other prohibitions contained in this ordinance, discharge of any firearm between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. on any Sunday in such a manner as to permit sound to be heard inside the confines of the dwelling unit, house or apartment of another person or as to be plainly audible at a distance of 200 feet or more from its source. For the purposes of this ordinance, "firearm" means any weapon that will or is designed to or may readily be converted to expel single or multiple projectiles by the action of an explosion of a combustible material.
Unfortunately I am going out of town later this morning, but I have two friends that are going to the meeting and going to let me know what the facts are. Thanks again Hokieman for letting people know that Sunday hunting could be adversely affected by this local ordinance.
