-- when to break a dog (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928347774)
when to break a dog
I have a 8 month old redtick female that is at every tree with the old dogs now. last night she struck and ran short track sounded like a champ got to her and there it sat big ol grinner. My question is when should I break her off of them and what is the best way to do so? That was her first time treeing by herself so I just got her off tree and left.
U did right
I am not sayin to ever pet em up on it but when just startin heck that stuff don't hurt nothin at least goin hunting and doin own thing u will get em straight no worries at all

When first starting your pup , you did the right thing by just leading it away . When your pup gets a little more experience & is treeing good ect & if the smileys continue to be a problem ...go into tree just like you always would , shoot it out , when the pup touches it bump w/ shocker . Each time it touches or grabs a hold bump it. The pup will think possum has the electricity in it a will want no part of them . Usually 2 or 3 x's is all it takes . When your pup trees a coon shoot it out & plenty of praise - it doesn't take much for them to figure out what their purpose is . (do not turn the shocker up to highest setting , do the lowest that will make them let go )

Thanks for replies. The very next night I took her by herself and she treed her first coon. Then took her and she treed in some blow downs and last night I took her she wouldn't hunt. So I'm going to put her up for few nights and try again.
