Bench Show Newbie

Hello All-

My husband does the nite hunts, and I decided to start handling for bench shows. I bought a 1 year old Redbone, who was "started on the bench".

I'm having a hard time getting her to stand still! She wants to look around, and she likes to move her feet. I know that's a big issue, but she doesn't try to jump down, she doesn't act bad, she just likes to move.

What can I do to help her stay still? I was told not to "punish" or associate negative responses while getting her used to myself and the bench.

HELP!

the biggest thing is practice, practice, practice even if she was 'started' on the bench it will take her a little while to get used to you and your touch.

if she keeps moving her feet, you may not have her set correctly. if she doesn't feel comfortable or balanced, she may move her feet to a better position.

with most redbones, you have to have a firm hand. there is a big difference between punishment and making sure they know who is in control.

if you still have trouble after you have worked with her for a little while, try to find a club close to you that is having a bench show and take her. you don't have to enter, just watch and afterward ask one of them for help. most bench show people are more than happy to help newcomers.
