i use ivomec on all my dogs wat else do i need to give to keep them from getting other worms,,, and how old does a puppy need to be to start on ivomec,,thanks for any help

I use strongid (human grade not nemex) on puppies within the first couple days of birth. A vet told me the sooner the better, no need to wait to start. Never had an issue.

A vet of mine turned me onto safeguard/panacure for tapes as it was safe for lactating bitch and cheaper. Of course he would NEVER tell a pet owner that.

Some of your heart worm preventatives help as well.

I had a bad experience that was an expensive lesson due to ivermectin. (and it was with a Malinois on heartguard for a year before I got her). So I don't use it or keep it on hand. Octigal is not cheap! Neither are the test to diagnose. I use interceptor when I am going through heart worm country. I definitely don't want to deal with liver damage again, and since over half of my dogs are Malinois...I only use what I can use on them.

ALL OUR DOGS HAVE BEEN ON IVOMEC SINCE THEY WERE 4-6 MONTHS OLD, DEPENDING ON THE TIME OF YEAR THEY WERE BORN. I GIVE 1cc PER MONTH TO GROWN DOGS. THAT'S 'BOUT TWICE WHAT THEY NEED ACCORDING TO MOST VETS. WHAT WORKS FOR ONE BREED MIGHT NOT FOR OTHERS.

That was my point and I never said anything about it killing. It WAS a costly lesson.

Never had an issue with it with my hounds. But when I got my narcotic detection Malinois she had been on heartguard for a year after coming to the US. Doing the routine bloodwork (which most people don't do), there were no outward signs other than a half hr of being a little lazy one day, the vet found a liver issue. We did tests and biopsy. Found out from vet some dogs/breeds shouldn't have it due to causing liver dysfunction. Herding breeds tend to be sensitive to it. It is pretty well known collies have reaction and should use something else.

I've seen quite a few departments use heartguard as preventative with no known issues and I have known quite a few k9's have the same liver issues as mine.

There are a lot of people who have different types of dogs at home. What works for one may be harmful to the next. People need to be aware of that when they are treating their dogs themselves without bet oversight.

With having the Malinois, Chessies, and a breeding program/kennel I use what works for both. Same when I had the plotts (before the anti's and wolves took over). They got the same as the Malinois/Dutch Shepherds after the incident despite not having an issue with the hounds (then again I never pulled bloodwork on them).

BTW, the dog didn't die from it. We had her on Octigal for 2 years and ran test every 3 mos to repair the damage and monitor progress. $120 a month for the Octigal (which was a human drug), not counting the tests. She didn't have any outward signs anything was wrong. But the damage was there.
