I always have found it amusing to see my young pups tree the cat but I would not use a cat as a training tool for an older dog. Seems to me that any off game that you provoke them on when starting a dog will just cause you more work down the road. But like I said, it is amusing and I will admit that I have sic'd em on the cat a few times.

the old timer didn't tell you what you would be training the dog to do. i've used cats many times and my dogs have treed several in the wild. it's great. i don't know if it helps them tree coon or other so called desireable game or not. in my old age i've gotten so soft i can't bring myself to hardly shot a coon but i still don't mind disposing of a wild cat.

Most will say no, don't use anything to train your pup unless you want it running it later on. I have used cats and seen cats used several times to get pups started. If you get a bottle of coon scent and spray the pads of their feet and let the pups chase it does no harm. If truth be known most hounds are junky and we teach them to chase the game we want. I have heard "ol timers" talk about using possums, house cats ,and a variety of different things that will climb a tree. Then wean the dogs off of these critters to hunt and tree only coons. It has worked and will continue to work, but I would use coon scent on whatever I had the pup messing with.
