Dog Shot Need Info

A BUDDY OF MINE HAD A 12 YEAR OLE WALKER GYP COONDOG SHOT AND KILLED TONIGHT BY A COUNTY SHERIFF'S DETECTIVE. THE DET. SAID THE DOG WAS ON HIS PORCH AND HE WENT TO GET IT OFF THE PORCH AND IT WOULDN'T GO. HE SAID HE DIDN'T SEE A NAME TAG ON IT AND IT STARTED ACTING AGGRESIVE SO HE SHOT IT WITH HIS TASER. HE THEN SAID IT CAME AT HIM SO HE SHOT IT 4 OR 5 TIMES AND KILLED IT. MY BUDDY HEARD THE SHOTS AND WHEN HE GOT THERE ASKED THE BOY ABOUT IT THE BOY HAD ALREADY PUT THE DOG IN A WHEEL BARROW AND COVERED IT UP. WHAT DOES MY BUDDY NEED TO DO? ANY INFO WILL BE APPRECIATED.

First I would call the news paper. Get animal rights activists putting the heat on and they will have to look into it.

I would also ask Steve Fielder what to do as I kow he has advised people in the past and may have some helful information for you to use. He'd definatley be worth a try.

creek man your buddy might contact an attorney to find out what your local law states, but i know here where i live if a dog is on your property molesting your stock or acting in aggressive behavior to persons or animal and you are in fear of the animal you have the right to protect your property and well being, tell your buddy good luck and keep us posted.

Costs

Lets just say that your buddy needs to consult an attorney, there are several cases were the dog owner has sued the county/sherriff's office for shooting a dog with no proof that it was acting in a aggressive manner or bothering livestock. Especially if the deputy was supposed to be on duty at the time he shot the dog. I have personal experience (I did not do the suing and didn't do the shooting) in my county where the county was sued for 20K and settled with the owner for 5k, so I would say go after at least 20k and in some areas going after 50K is not unheard of, you may only settle for 5K. There are legal precedents set out there for this so do some research and contact an attorney.
