-- 1st Strike ? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=133283)

1st Strike ?

I dont comp hunt so I dont know for sure how to ask this ?

Does it matter if a cast all opens and trees individual coons? The strike points goes to the 1st dog to open reguardless of the fact that all dogs have their own coon in seperate trees; correct?

Maybe this a better way of asking. 1st strike is based on times casted and not coons run; correct?

My understanding is a independant dog makes a better comp dog, but if a dog is so independant it heads as far away from the other dogs before hunting it wouldnt make a good comp dog; Would it?

Dont worry about strike points, Take them as they come.

A dog thst trees a coon every time you cast it will win you plenty.

Thats correct. STriking is based only upon a dog opening and points do not depend on whether separate tracks are started.

Hmmm. If one dog goes the opposite direction of the other 3 and the 3 dogs don't score on coons and the 1 dog does, then he can win the cast, easily. On the other hand if the 3 dogs are treeing coons and the 1 dog is not, then he has little chance. If they are all treeing coons, the dog that beat the other 2 and the 1 dog that treed coons by himself may have a close score at the end of the hunt.

Bottom line, a dog has to tree coons to win. A dog thats by itself can be slower, his owner can wait longer to tree him and he may still come out on top.
