Toyota Tundra Diesel Dually Project Truck

With a strong OEM presence at SEMA, automakers are forced to bring The Badass to the masses. Toyota has apparently been overrun with requests from customers for some form of diesel motivation in its Tundra pickup and the automaker has responded... sort of... with the Tundra Dually Diesel. Toyota utilized two Tundra CrewMax pickups that were joined at the hip to lengthen the frame and add an additional foot to the bed. Although the majority of the Tundra Dually Diesel is bespoke show material, the drivetrain has been pulled straight from a Hino medium duty truck, with the only exception being a custom split driveshaft.

The crown jewel of the Dually is a JO8E 8.0-liter inline six turbodiesel, making around 300 HP and 600 lb.-ft. of torque. Shoehorning that kind of mill into the tight confines of the Tundra proved to be a challenge. The body had to be lifted off the frame by three inches and after some hacking and chopping of the firewall, they were finally able to fit the 1,500 pound engine into the bay. Between fitting the oil burner into the snout and mating it to a five-speed Allison tranny, the interior accoutrements have suffered – the HVAC controls are nonfunctional and the massive stick is there to provide additional leverage when shifting gears.

Mike Levine has a great write up covering all the details of the Tundra Dually Diesel, which is worth a read. And even though this mutha' runs, don't expect a production version to make it to dealers any time soon.

We've added Toyota's press release after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE

Toyota Tundra Diesel Dually Project Truck
"Road Warrior" exterior combined with luxury Interior
10/30/2007

Making a bold and adventurous statement about the contrasts between rugged "Road Warrior" performance and opulent luxury, a Toyota Tundra CrewMax diesel dually project truck made its debut at the 2007 SEMA Show.

At its core, the Tundra light duty pickup's stock engine was replaced with a medium duty diesel powerplant plucked from a 35,000-pound commercial truck. The 8.0-liter inline six-cylinder high-torque engine, made by Toyota affiliate Hino, is mated with an Eaton five-speed manual transmission and a Hino back end. Toyota Motorsports Technical Group heavily modified the Tundra to accommodate the beefed-up driveline.

A host of custom exterior treatments point to the off-the-charts muscle under the hood. Prominent examples include forged aluminum alloy 22.5-inch wheels custom made by Alcoa, a diamond plate-lined bed, a charcoal gray metallic flat paint finish and a fifth-wheel hitch rated at 24,000 pounds.

The muscular theme on the outside shifts dramatically to that of luxury on the inside with hand-sewn ginger leather seats, suede pillars and headliner and dual rear captain's chairs with individual DVD entertainment systems.

Not even close to true, just because they assemble some vehicles in this country? They are a japanese Corp. and thats where the profits go. And take it from a guy that has worked on vehicles every day for 40 years. They are not better vehicles. If you check you will find among trucks the ford f150 is built with the highest percentage of domestic parts. 75%

BUY AMERICAN.

Haha well you believe what you want they are 98% USA made and this is a prime example of what ppl think when they are mislead. My mother has worked at Toyota since 1995 and I have owned Toyota since I could drive they are far better than any AMERICAN vehicle like a ford or Chevy.

Egg on you boy,,,,,yes the manufacturing is done here. The profits go back home. The cutting tool end of the manufacturing comes from over seas. The wages are not that good. I just dont and never will understand you Japanese lovers.

To say Toyota is far better than any other vehicle like Ford or Chevy is a ignorant thing to say.

Another thing Japan does not have room for the Tundra, therfor they dont drive them.
Food for thought the #1 high end car for China is the buick. Do your homework for the world wide auto industry and your (and mine too) mind may change. The futur holds alot of changes...

I have driven and or owned all of the big 3 trucks. I had a 2001 ram 1500 that lasted the longest and truly got used and abused. But besides that truck all I can see my self driving in the future is a toyota. There is a toyota plant right here in wv. Toyotas last longer and ALWAYS have a higher resale value.

They sure dont last longer up here in our weather with the salt on the roads. I can show ya 5 year old toyotas with the bedsides and rockers rotting off of them.

Got plenty of salt down here also. There are plenty of GM Ford And Mopars with rust on them as well around here! I guarantee if ya lined them all up side by side all with rust on them the toyota still has a higher value.

Amen on that. They are definitely not better vehicles.Had 2 Tacomas in my younger days that I bought new.@ 45,000 miles the 2.7 litre blowed a head gasket and the Tranny went out on my 02 TRD @ 16,000 miles. Both of em hit the road and I aint never looked back. You add head gaskets blown and rotted frames Toyota has and it will blow your mind.My old 95 powertroke that I sold with 350,000 on it still running strong. My 97 powerstroke has 210,000 on it now,no breakdowns EVER just a set of batteries. My 08 6.4 powerstroke has 100,000 miles on it,no breakdowns ever just 1 recall, doing the egr and dpf delete to get better fuel mileage.Had a 92 f-150 300 straight six and sold it to my neighbor about 8 years ago and it had a little over 300,000 on it and he is still hunting out of it today.People need to wake up.The Japs put Tariffs on imports coming into their country, well guess what we don't and their government purposely minuplates the yen less so its less than our dollar so 30% profits going home are looking pretty good. They pay their workers way less, give em a crappy 401 for retirement and still asking more $$$ for their vehicles, why?More money going home to the mother land.If you wanna buy Jap that's ok Ill still hunt with ya lol.

Toyota

I really liked the one I had. I've had the big three also and they weren't with out their problems too. The dodge I had the tranny went out at about 80k. The Chevy Z71 OffRoad I had rusted fast and sat so low in the front it bottom out on everything. I currently drive a 05 F-350 with a PowerStroke 6.0 and have put about a million injectors in it and had to do a EGR delete and it only has 165k miles.

If and when Toyota or Nissan come out with a 3/4 - 1 ton I would try one. I think no matter which brand you buy some of the money stays here, and some goes over seas. I just want it to be built here in the states.

that truck is way more truck than any coon hunter needs. if one has enough money to buy that truck, they should have their retirement paid up, their childrens college or higher education paid up and their old age insurance paid up. oh yea, all that after giving what their heart calls for to their church. why would anyone want to spend so much of their life for so much truck except to buy social acceptance, and to satisfy the sinful need of glutony.
