Kennel "or" Chain

Just wondering how many hunters keep there dogs on chains, verses kennels. I have dogs in or on both, but I hate scooping poop every day off concreet.

I have 5 kennels and 2 tied out

I've had them tied, I've had pens on dirt, I've had off the ground wood pens and now I have concrete kennels. The easiest to maintain is being tied out. I don't like the concrete as much as I thought I would, but it is nice in some regards. No worries about them breaking their chain or getting tangled. I have a well so my water pressure isn't super great, if I had super hard water pressure the concrete would be easier to deal with.

I use chains. I have been using a chain on a cable for about 4 months now and I like it better than just a chain. The cable I have is 9ft long and the chain is 6ft long. I have never had a dog get tangled up on a chain. I like chains better than a kennel for the fact that climbers can't get out.

I have ten in kennels and three on chains and two in pastures. I like the kennels as far as not having to worry about worms but I hate scooping poop. I like chains for keeping them in better shape. They seem to get fat and lazy in the kennels. I will probably always keep the some in/on both.

hvae mine off the ground maybe a foot,, treated floors,,, chain link all with tops.. only disadvantage,,,, poop scooping,,, but not dealing with fleas and other parasites,i can live with scooping,, have had dog on cable and chains,,, they did just fine,,,, just what ya get used to ,,,

I've had my dogs in kennels and on concrete since I started but recently moved and now have them on chains in the dirt. I tell you I LOVE not scooping anymore but it does make the dogs a little nastier looking since its been so wet and muddy down here from all the snow/ice melting. If i had concrete I would keep them in a kennel over having them on a chain though.

I have 3 kennels in a building with a concrete floor and I love it. I have two tied out and I hate it. I can clean the kennels with bleach and simple green and it is much more sanitary than the dirt . It has electric for buckets and is lit. The kennels are 10X10 with barrels for houses

I cannot stand having a dog tear up my hard by running the chain or digging. I pray for the day I get down to 3 dogs and they are all on concrete.

CROOKED FOOT KENNELS

When it's cold like now they're in the kennel. But I keep mine on the chain majority of the time. On the chain helps young dogs to lead also.

I have a custom built 4 run kenell with concrete floors that have been sealed and painted. I would not have a dog on a chain and if it was I would keep the ground cleaned up and treated for fleas and ticks. Having them on a chain your asking for worms, fleas and ticks.

I also scoop the kennels daily and bleach them twice a week when the temps above freezing. I also sanitize the fencing, if they get any poop on it, it attracts flies. I have to keep the insects in check in the spring and summer because I live within 200 yards of the Grand River and the elevator is about the same distance. I use lawn granules around the kenell and fly bait. My first year out here without the kennel was bad. My dogs were getting ate up by insects. The worst was horse fly bites.

I have noticed less issues with insects since they have been on concrete. Sanitation is the key to dog health.

Kennel only,too many stray dogs around here to leave on chains.

i have 5 tied out and 8 in kennels and 14 in above ground kennels.

For fleas, ticks, flies, and mosquitoes to some extent, you can zip tie a Bayer cattle fly tag to the dogs collar and it will keep them tic and flea free. It also helps keep biting flies and some insurance against skeeters. I have cattle, sheep, and goats and was having a terrible time with biting flies. I put the cattle tags on my dogs and no more flies. Ridding them of flea and tick problems was just a lucky side effect. Only problem is with the hog and bear dogs that run through a lot of rough terrain, they tear the tags off. I am experimenting with zip tying them to the under side of the collar.

I worm monthly and use a flea and tick topical. I haven't seen a problem with dogs being on a chain. I guess if I didn't take care of the dogs they might have those problems.

I kept my hound on a chain for awhile until I got all the new kennels built. I came home one day and the neighbor's English coonhound and pitbull were in the yard around my dogs. The last thing I'd want is some stray English dog killing my hound on a chain (that's supposed to be a joke).

we have to keep ours in kennel here. i have one with concrete and another with gravel. i love the gravel pin. clean up is a little harder but the smell is not near as bad. i hate scooping poop every day, but you have too. when i was in NC i kept all my dogs on chains and like it better.

Kennel kept 24/7.

If it is a pen were you have to go in with the dog I would choose the pen. If it is a pen were you just feed and water over or threw the fence then I would take the chain. The more human contact the better.

I have pea gravel in my kennels. I use a sprayer that I can mix the ODOCLEEN, or bleach in and spray the gravel, and kennels down. That keeps the smell in check. I have never had concrete, but I think I would like that better. Not sure. The gravel gets all over.
