Ghost Coons Sitting up???

Went hunting last night. cut the dogs toward the feeder and they didn't strike off the feeder so I went to go see how much was left in it. the feeder was completly empty. But in the tree right next to it sat a coon all balled up in a fork. The dogs came back after awhile to check in and they both walked right by and around this tree and never so much as smelled up the tree, not to mention striking. Now yes both dogs I was hunting were under two. but i thought it was pretty strange. and this has happened atleast 2 other times. My question is, 1. has anyone else seen a coon that their dogs appeared to not even know was there. and 2. what do you think is going on in this situation. Are the coons not coming down till later and were up in the tree from the night before?

the feeder is getting hit by something because I fill it up and the food keeps disappearing. BUT, I have yet to hit a hot track off this feeder. My dog has treed coons near the feeder and last night ended up hitting a track 200 yards from the feeder and treeing it kinda close and having the meat. but that wasn't a hot track either. its kinda like the coons in this one tree are ghost coons. and in this same block I saw a coon sitting up and took my dog to the tree and he didn't pay it any attention. Has anybody seen this? or know whats going on with the ghost coons in my area??

there probably feeding in the afternoon and sitting up till late night or early morning before heading back to there den...happens alot when it starts getting warmer out..

PUT A WILDLIFE CAMERA ON THE FEEDER AND IT WILL TELL THE STORY WHEN ANS WHAT IS HITTING THE FEEDER. IT DOES NOT TAKE COONS LONG TO ADJUST TO PRESSURE. YOU HUNT EVERY NITE AT 9.00 AND THEY WILL WATE TILL 11;00 TO MOVE YOU NEED TO DROP ON THE FEEDER BETWEEN 3;00 AND 6;00 AM

generally pregnant momma coons loose all of their scent before giving birth and for some amount of time while nursing. generally about 8 or more weeks they have no smell. this would be that time of year. my guess is that you have a sow hanging around eating your food.

Any ANIMAL can put a time clock on you if you continue the same hunting style all the time..i like 2 mix it up from time 2 time.....

Jacob I was also going to bring up the point of the sow coons not having that much scent after they have babies. I will also add that when they have little ones, they don't get down on the ground nearly as much for several weeks. March and April have always been harder months for me to tree coons than any other month. I've always said this plus pollen was the reason. If that's not it I don't want to know!! LOL

TreeMyDog is right I think. and I know the feild rats will hit your feeders and it will look like coons are eating it up. The rats eat me up untill the coons found the feeder.

i'm not trying to run your dogs down or anything like that, but those dogs should have been able to wind that coon and get treed. what breed of dog are you hunting? my blueticks would have treed that layed up coon. you need to figure out what kind of nose on a dog you want to hunt. if they can't tree lay ups i would say they are hot nosed dogs.

Southernthunder, Im going to disagree with the if they cant tree lay-ups they are hot nosed statement. Owned and seen several track driving, cold nosed hounds that never did tree a lay-up, also have owned several "Tree Checkers " that go around sniffing trees then fall treed, maybe a lay-up, maybe not. I have owned several lay-up dogs, and I wouldnt of called them cold-nosed, medium nosed maybe, just a different style of dog.

I agree. Over the years the best lay up dogs that I have owned have been hot nosed track dogs- but they just used their nose differently. They could tree a coon that others couldn't smell, but not even touch a track that others could work. One in particular [Gr nite ch The Truth Dog] was famous for this- we hunted at Heritage days and got put on feeders- she had the first one treed over the bucket- shut the cast out- they came in to the tree but couldn't smell a thing- she did this regularily- but couldn't run the tough old tracks.

ncstatewalkers, Im hunting the most accurate dog I have ever hunted right now and when she split trees or you hunt her by herself you better cock the gun but this past two weeks she has missed a couple of times on three different split trees and it has blown my mind and a couple of guys told me about the pregnant sows. Sure made me feel better.

i don't think nose plays as much of part in treeing layed up coon as much as hunting style..some dogs are track minded while others tend to hunt with there head in the air. but the air conditions have to be right also, a little breeze helps them locate better..but if a dog is not going to pick it's head up off the ground to try an wind one there not going to be much of a layup dog..

I'm going to disagree about the sows having no scent. My dog normally looks her best this time of year. What I do think is most people don’t realize just how old the tracks that we call cold tracks really are or aren’t I guess I should say. I think most of us would be disappointed in just how our dogs really run a track. If you don’t believe me you should try hunting around rice fields in the day time.

sure your dog looks great, it is running boars! the spring hunts which usually have the highest scores of the year tend to be when the sows are very inactive, sitting in the den for days on end with their kits. minnesota used to have open season for shooting coon. during that time i shot many many coon during april and may and june. almost never ever shot a sow. explain that.

SOUTHERN THUNDER- I was hunting one english dog and one walker. Thats what confounded me so much. A had a tree happy walker and she didn't even tree on it!!! I figured if a walker wouldn't tree on it it musta been a ghost coon!! haha. I don't know what was going on, and they might be sorry, who knows, but they sure didn't tree on this coon.

Texas is open year round for killing coons. We tree sows thru the spring all the time. Yes I know they move less but my point is they do give off sent. The dogs didn’t tree the coon sitting up because they don’t usually tree coons you see sitting up no matter what time of year it is.

men have the same thing happen to use we went to the tree there was nothing there when we was leaving i look up a diff tree there he was then she start to tree this happen 6 moths ago and it was around the feeder to he might was there that morning

no i'm not saying your dogs are sorry at all. i have some that can't tree lay ups either, but they also can't run a sure enough cold track. that is why i made the statement. some dogs just don't have the nose to smell a coon in a tree that has been there for a few hours.

to the rest of ya's, quit making excuses for why your dogs can't tree and have the meat. i mean come on a coon with no scent at all, thats a good one. i've heard it all now.

to the gentlemen that hunts the island full of coons, sometimes its hard for a dog to walk in on that many tracks with that many coons in different trees. i bet that is hard on a dog, unless you have a tree happy feller.
