I feed mine midday for this very reason. I don’t want them to hunt after they just ate but I also do not want then hunting with no energy. Look at it like this; if you feed them when you got in at 10 last night and you hunt until 3 in the morning tonight. Then that has been 29 hours since the last time the dog ate. Then people wonder why the dog is not consistent in how it performs.

Mine always hunt on an empty stomach for 3 reasons. 1 is because i dont want to loose a strike because they have to stop and empty out. 2. i never want to have to watch a dog die from a twisted stomach because he was fed before he was hunted. 3 after hunting is when they need the nutrition the most to replace what they just burned, they also seem to handle the heat better this time of year with an empty stomach.

I feed mine 1/4 of what I normally feed about a few hours before I go if I know I'm going. Then give them the rest when I get back.

in the morning with the rest of the chores keep them on same diet same time they will have the energy and be constant. just my thought

When I first started out. My papa said hunt em hungry. Would make em want to really catch a Coon to eat PLUS they would always be easier to catch. Knowing they were going home to get fed lol. Anyhow, I feed after.

I like the way old timers think. Not sure if there's any truth to it but it sounds logical lol. My dad always told me to feed our beagle the liver after removing the gall bladder. Said it makes them want to run rabbits that much harder. I don't know if that's true either but she sure liked them.

We feed ours after hunting. A dog is prone to bloat (twisted gut) within an hour after eating. Just like a swimmer. Its not so common with a dog on an automatic feeder because they tend to pick at their food and not stuff themselves.

I always feed mine after I always load the dogs I'm taking hunting then feed the others. Before I use to feed them before I left to go hunting then they wouldn't hunt so I the next time I went hunting I didn't feed the ones I took and they done good. So always load the ones your gonna take then feed the others

Feed morning and evening everyday wheather they are going hunting or not. Have for 30 years and never saw an issue.

I think they are bad. How do you keep mice and rats out of them? The ones I saw a guy using his dog just nudged the door back with its snout and the door seemed to stick from getting hung up on dog food. Are they designed differently now?
What if you are auto feeding and your dog eats a decent amount 30 minutes before you go hunting? Then you stand a chance of a twisted gut.
Auto feeders are a little on the lazy side in my opinion. Your animals need checked on daily so if you are checking on them any way like you should, an auto feeder is unnecessary.

I had an old Red dog I had to put on an automatic feeder. He'd pick around and just eat a bite or two here or there and the birds would eat it before he had the chance. Got to looking skinny and I couldn't figure it out. Put him on auto feeder and he looked good. He never ate too much to make him fat.

On the other hand I have a B&T Female that if I put her on auto feed she would weigh 150 lbs!

I like feeding mine twice a day. Who likes to just eat one meal a day? Not me. I feed them a little every morning and then of an evening. If I hunt them I feed them when I get back. Sometimes those after hunting and morning feedings are a little close together though!

No Answer. I had been hunting a young dog and was leading him back to the truck about 4:00 in the morning; he was pulling, so I half hitched him. He got a drink of water and regurgitated some of his meal, and it looked just like wet dog food after fifteen hours. We recently had a dog at Oklahoma State for some vet work, and I asked the doctor, about the relationship to "twisted guts" and feed practices; "he said, there was no evidence that feeding time contributed to a "twisted gut" he said it had more to do with genetics, than eating habits. I have never even heard of a twisted gut with a hound. It is a genetic problem and is mostly in large breeds like Danes.
