Anyone heard or seen anything like this?
I sold a B&T puppy to a guy last Sat. She was 8 weeks old and in perfect health. I told the guy to get her a 5 way and she was due to be wormed that week also. He took her home and 3 days later calls me and says somethings wrong with her legs. Her feet are turning under and her "knees" are turning in. I told him that something has had to happen to her, she was fine when he picked her up and the others were all fine. Well he calls me yesterday and says she can't walk at all and lays down to eat. He also said that she was not puking and her stool was good. So I agree to meet him last night and check her out, when I call back he says she's dead. His 12 yr old daughter is crying about it and he wants me to replace the pup. I don't know if she got poisoned or what, but I am puzzled about this. Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

If you hadn't given the pup any shots and knew it needed a worming then the guy has a legitimate gripe if he paid money for the dog .
But , if you didn't give him any kind of guarantee and he didn't ask for one the you could just laugh all the way to the bank I guess.
I dont think 3 days worth of some worms would cause all that. Something very serious was wrong with him that you didnt know about or something very serious happened to the pup.
i had a pup do about the same thing. i raised 18 pups out of 2 litters of redticks out of my male dog. when this pup was about 6 weeks old he started doing the same things. he couldn't walk very far and his feet turned like you said, when he stood up he was very shaky. he was alright other than that,he ate, drank and wasn't sick in any other way. i just tried to help him the best i could and i ordered a supplement for the immune system and started giving it to him regular. after about 3 weeks he started looking better and was 100% within 2 months. i sold him at the winter classic this year and he is running and treeing with the older dogs. all the other pups never had any health problems and are still doing good.
i had given him 7 way shots every 2 weeks since he was 3 weeks old, total of 4 shots. and i wormed him every 2 weeks since he was 3 weeks old until he was 2 months old then wormed him every month till i sold him.
it could be just an allergic reaction to something,i'm not sure but i wish your pup would have turned out like mine,i sorry and good luck.

sounds like some kind of poison to me.
i ask him what kind of wormer and shots he gave the pup.
i gave some pups some ivermet wormer years ago and it done something like that, almost saved one, didnt relize the stuff would do that, what was causeing them to die,vet did blood sample and said it was some kind of toxin in blood..
if he hasnt got rid of pup yet, try to get a blood sample to the vet..
also had a older dog do that and spent a lot of money at the vet and he got her back on her feet and when she came back home ,didnt last 3 days till she died, vet said she had something got from ticks ,dont remember the name he called it,

She had been wormed twice by that time, I usually worm at 4,6, and 8 weeks, the shots were on order and hadn't come in yet. I offered to keep her and give her shots my self, but he said he would go ahead and get them for her. He insists that she wasn't exposed to anything, but who knows.

I HAD A PUP THAT DID THAT. IT ALREADY HAD ITS SHOTS AND STILL GOT THAT WAY,AND YES IT WAS PARVO.I ALMOST LOST HIM BUT I TOOK HIM TO MY VET AND HE CAME THROUGH FINE.
Shots aren't meant to be 100% effective ..you have to check and see if the dog's body reacted to it by looking for infection at the spot where you gave the shot ...if you don't see a reaction then the shot didn't take ...do your homework.
why not give a pup a 7 way at 3 weeks old?
i have been going to vet school for 3 years and my dad has had a kennel for 30 years,20 of which i have been his partner. we have always started giving 7 ways and worming at 3 weeks old. the pup i had mentioned was the only one who has ever had such a reaction out of the pups we have raised ourselfs. from the time a pup is born they are very easily capable of catching any kind of disease from numerous sources so you have to protect them. at 3 weeks they are strong enough to handle the shot.

my vet told me not to give the first set of shots to a puppy until 8 weeks old. They did not say why.

I heard that you shouldn't give a puppy there shots that young because it counteracts the mothers natural immunity she is giving to the puppies thru her milk. Thats just what I heard.
same here we had a litter af beagle pup did the same thing after giving the shots and wormer but i think it was the wormer that caused it we did loose a few but after a few days the others seem to come out of it never had anything like thathappen before just a freak thing i guess

They don't give the seven or eight way shot until they are 8 weeks old because they are not effective. It is a waste of money to give them unless you have taken the puppy off of the female.

It wasn't Parvo.Had it been Parvo the pup would have had diarrhea and a bloody stool. They also stop eating with Parvo and dehydrate.

Also Houndman every puppy we sell comes along with this paper signed by both of us, and a copy goes to each,,,
We at Quail Hill Kennel, guarantee the health of this puppy to be free from genetically inherited disease until 1 year of age, if this dog develops any disease of this nature, return the dog to us, with registration papers in order, along with a documented statement from a licensed veterinarian with contact info, we will replace it with a puppy of equal value if available or return the purchase price if desired, to the owner on record with the United Kennel Club, or whoever designated by said owner.

Justin Smith/ i make straight A's. i have since i started school.
i'm just giving my opinion on the subject. i have given 7 ways shots to over 150 pups in the last 20 years and have never felt like it was a waste of money and i have never killed one because i gave them a 7 way at 3 weeks old.

It wasn't Parvo, I know Parvo and this pup was eating fine with no diarhea. If I breed the dogs and raise the pups I guarantee them, but a buddy and I went together and got these pups at 6 weeks old. I didn't advertise the pup, this guy contacted me looking for a hound pup for his kid, and wanted a female, so after much thought I let him take her for next to nothing , because I felt sorry for his kid. I was also told by vet not to give shots until 8 weeks, my dad has raised bird dogs and beagles for 40 yrs and has always done it that way, I don't let pups leave until 8 weeks if I raise them and they have their shots, but I had ordered shots for these and they hadn't come yet. Now the guy wants me to replace the pup and I'm stuck with what to do about it. The puppy left here fine, but a week later is dead. I'm still in a quandry.

Worming a pup don't mean it don't have worms ...only sending in a stool sample to be inspected will do that .
There's too many kind of worms and too many ways that worms can infect a dog and stay in them even after worming to be satisfied with using a dab of puppy wormer once a week .
If you only charged next to nothing , then just move on and let it be a lesson learned for everyone involved .
Could it have been ricketts ?

quote Hobo
Thats what I was thinking till he said the pup died.Would Ricketts cause a pup to die?
Like wise guys I was thinking the same thing. Rickets wont kill a pup,but someone sure could have.
Houndhunter,my best advice would be to make good on this pup.I agree it is somewhat "fishy"But one man"bad mouthin"ya can do a lot more damage than refuding the money or replaceing the pup.JMO
