Indepndent breed

Do any of the other breeds come as independant as the walker breed does ?

Rarely

Ive hunted with thousands of dogs and my answer to this is yes. English dogs are typically independent dogs but other then walkers and english its about 1 out of 1000 as far as other breeds are coincerned. Trust me when youve been in hundreds of hunts you will see what breed splits al night and what breeds cover which is why i went to walkers long time ago.

I think it has more to do with the bloodline and breeding than just the breed. Just my opinion.

I can take you with 7 B&T's right off hand that I have hunted with, that are very independent. That is not to mention all of them that I have been told about but you know how that goes.

Exactly.

Breeding and training will prove to be the most consistent factor. A guy that i hunt with a lot hunts nothing but black and tans. He has 8 dogs and they all win hunts bc everyone of them will split tree on you all night with the coon.

Independant

iv always wondered if the walkers had the handle on independence. most of the Color dogs iv hunted with wernt Independant. but like yawl said that could have been mostly because of the breeding

I prefer blue dogs. I have pleasure hunted reguarly since 1995. I have only competition hunted a few times but with this new blue pup I have I am interested in seeing how he does. However, there is a very, very well known walker dog man from close to here that competition hunts a lot and is very very successfull at it. I heard him say something about 5 years ago that stuck with me and I will likely never forget. He said and i quote........................ "I have never seen a good Bluetick in a competition hunt".

I think that the breeding and training are the main factor for the walkers being independent. But the English breed to me has shown to have more naturally independent dogs. no offense intended to you blue dog owners (cause I have hunted with 1 nice blue dog in my lifetime) but I would say they are the least independent of all the breeds.

Independant Breeds

I think it has little to do with breed. It is more of today's training methods. Also some registerers have contributed to this factor in their scoring. With the desire for a dog to split tree today, by so many...the use of the collar/whipping for honoring another dog makes many dogs appear independant. But what about their pups...they will have to be TRAINED the same way, not what I would call an independant dog or line.
We all agree more Walkers are entered...so we see more independant Walkers. Win or lose. A few lines from all breeds ARE independant, naturally. That is my preferance. No one likes a me too dog...I won't be hunting one that I had to Tri Tronics for coming into another dogs tree.
I like the comment "I want ALL of my tree and Part of yours!

Good hunting with what ever you like.

Amazing how much we think alike. That's exactly what I like as well, all of mine and some of yours LOL.

Never had a problem findin that with Black dogs.

has to do with breeding, training or how the pup is raised in my opinion,,, nothing to do with breed type

Iv heard of folks training there dogs to a light i.e what ever direction there light was pointed that was where there dog was suppose to go , has anyone else see or heard of this ?

True independence doesn't come from training IMO. The dog is either born that way or it is not. I have one walker here and several plotts. The walker female was the most me toooing hound I ever had and the one plott was the most independent I have ever had. The breed of dog has nothing to do with it. It is the individual dog that is a product of a line that has been bred to be independent.

My Blue dogs are very independent and have no problem getting off alone.Last nite hunt I was in we saw 4 coon,my Sneaker dog was under all 4,ALONE.The rest of the cast happened to be Walkers.
If you hunt a dog alone for awhile (how long depends on the dog)it will make them more independent. It does for me anyway.

ABOUT DOGS

I HUNT REDBONES AND THEY ARE VERY INDEPENDANT BUT THEY WILL HONOR ANOTHER DOG THAT HAS A COON AND THEY DONT STAY SPLIT TREED SLICK ALL THE TIME LIKE MOST OF YOUR WLKER DOGS DO. THAT IS MY OPINION

Up here its mostly blueticks & walkers. Majority of the walker dogs the last thing i'd call them is independent. The blueticks we are hunting off my fathers Rambo II female are mostly all independent, some even to independent they'll do anything to get by themseleves.

I believe that breeding has alot to do with it, but I also believe that dogs are a product of surroundings, if I shock a dog for covering he will stop covering if I never hunt them alone they might be more apt to cover. If I kick them for coming in they will stay gone, maybe not hunting, but will stay gone. They might be 'Persuaded to be different than they really are.

In another registries world hunt I took part in 5 casts, either hunting, judging, or guiding. On those 5 casts I hunted with 5 different breeds of dog and saw all 5 breeds split tree at least once. In 5 casts, I only saw all of the dogs in the cast on the same tree once and that was off of a hot track struck within the minute. Seems to me the better dogs in all breeds have plenty independence.

HAHAHAH a reply like this my friend tells how much hunting youve done.

Want to know what ive seen in the hundreds and hundreds of hunts ive been too? I have never seen a redbone tree first and stay and have a coon also ive only hunted with 1 plott that i would own and out of the hundreds of bluetics ive hunted with seen 3 that were coon dogs. Ive hunted with many many english dogs that did it the way it should be done on a consistent basis and way to many good walkers to even remember. That my fellow message board buddies is what ive seen. Also i go to 2 to 3 hunts a week and pleasure hunt 3 to 5 nights a week. Its obvious what breeds win and win ALOT. Want to beat a good walker consistently you better have a better walker.
