Howling

I don't this has been discussed yet. Almost every night my plott will start howling. First with a barely audiable drawn out humming. Then she start howling but not very loud then she really gets going loud. My two curs will join in with their choppy howl and then it stops.
How many on here have dogs that howl? Do your neighbors complain? If mine did it for more than a minute I woud worry about it but they don't.

I have 2 litter mates that have been doing that for 9 years now! None of the other 4 ever join in though! It's a beautiful sound once they get going!

Usually happens in the morning, evening, I come outside or when the fire whistle goes off. They are quiet all the other times!

I have one that howls when he hears a siren coming, he starts in long before I hear it. But stops right when it goes by. I have a house dog that howls if I do.

I cant stand a barking dog around the house, but ive had a few that howl and it sounds awesome, and they never made it a problem so i just let it go

One must wonder what their howling means to each of them. I suspect it's some form of unity, support message, but then, I'm only a man.

Doesn't it go all of the way back to wolves? T-Top bred Redbones all do this. I have a litter of 7 week old pups and several of them will already do it.

I think it's something they hear in the distance. If it's at the same time every day, the train must be right on schedule.

Howlers...

.. had a couple good ones, now gone.... Our neighbors but one LOVED them and he was too far to be bothered, just said they sounded sad. Our would howl with the yotes. One neighbors used to have bassett hounds another a husky and a beagle and one rhodesian ridgebacks and now a Treeing Walker... we still get to hear howls! New people just assume it's the yotes. We wouldn't leave them out all day here though or we'd get complaints...Big time. We are a suburb of Boston after all...lol...

More people are bothered by the chop mouthed dawgs.... and all the roosters and we have one LOUD MOUTHED man in the area...OH...and the BagPipe Teacher! lol...

Speaking of yotes 2 winters ago I let my jack russel out to kill grass but not known to me there were two yotes about 75 yards behind the house eating a beaver carcass, russel seen them ran out to them started jumping on them and playing I hollowed, they took off and russel went with just as happy can be, came home a few minutes later no harm done. I've also have had young hound befriend a pack yotes. That was embarrassing

Coyotes & wolves will howl as a pack, just before going hunting. That howling is a form of pack bonding.

I have Toy Fox Terriers who howl almost every night, & it always starts with one particular dog, then, one by one, the rest join in. It will go on for a minute or two, then it stops. Sometimes they do it in the morning, also.

I just call it "singing", and they sure seem to enjoy it.

Mine howl when they hear a siren or coyotes. I mean let loose. All 5 of em. Let em call the law. I dont care. I lock the gate at rd and they aint gonna walk back in here. To lazy.

guess i will catch some ribin on this i don't want no howlin dog im old school raised the old timers use to say if a dog just starts howlin it's a sign of death so take it for what it's worth

Mine do it every night after they get finished eating and have done so for the last 15 or more years. The oldest always starts it off. Followed by the others. This has been passed down to the next oldest twice after my oldest has died.

all 11 of mine do it when they hear a siren or yotes howling,
also heard it a sign of someone dieing in family, but my dogs being it often lately but I always hear a fire engine or cop car if I go out and listen for awhile.

I was just thinking the same thing...but with my luck I wont make it there.

I have two males and a female in my kennel and none of them howl or ever have howled. The two males are very quiet in the kennel and never bark unless of course they see me heading that way with boots and a light on. The female does bark sometimes, but she never howls.
We have two worthless little house dogs that make a 20 minute event out of the firetruck passing by, yet the coon dogs still wont join in. It's funny, they just kind of stand there and stare at the little dogs like they can't figure out why.
I had a Plott that would howl in the middle of the night and like others have posted, he would start out real low...unless you were awake and really listening at the time you wouldn't hear him. He would pick it up in volume some but really wouldn't do it very loud and definitely not as loud as he could have. I used to think he was just lonely back then. He was the only dog I had at the time. He wouldn't do it for long and would stop right away if I yelled to him. He would only do it maybe once a month if that.
I have noticed that some dogs do something similar to howling. What I was told is "talking" to other dogs in the area at night sometimes. They will throw a few barks and wait for an "answer" from some dog off in the distance, then answer back. I have seen this go on for an hour or more. None of mine do this now, but I have had dogs that liked to do that. Again, they never did it all the time, just when the mood struck them. Many times when a dog is seemingly barking at nothing at night it is talking to another one that the human ear cannot detect. The male bluetick I have does this. The other two never do.
I had one once that gave a scared sort of howl bark when she heard thunder off in the distance. We called her the weather dog because she let us know if a storm was coming. She was scared to death of a lightning storm yet gunfire was never a problem.

I'm like you are hillbilly.I remember my dad having a fit when a dog would howl.And don't let a whip-poor-will rid start making its noise at the same time.The old timers back then would get all worried.

I can't stand a dog that barks or howls for no reason.I got a beagle that did the howling when I first got him.He learned not to do that for no reason.

Ok tell me this.If you can't hear that dog off in the distance that your dog is barking at or talking to as you call it.How do you know there is really another dog out there your's is talking to and not just barking to bark? Sorry but I don't buy that line.

I hear the way the dogs bark when they are "talking" to a dog off in the not so distance that I CAN hear...when they bark the same way, a few stupid meaningless barks and then pause for the answer, just like they do when I CAN hear the other dog then, O.K., maybe not...but would you not agree that sure sounds like what they are doing??? As opposed to simpleminded barking at nothing. Why else would they pause, it aint like they are barking so mad they need to catch their breath. Either way they don't need to be barking for either reason.
It's just like when I could tell a storm was coming in with the one dog. The way she barked before I could hear the storm was the same as when, later, it arrived close enough so I could hear it.
Do not be sorry, I could absolutely care less what you "buy"... this is what I saw my dogs do. I am not saying anyone else's do the same or even a similar thing. I do sincerely hope you are able to get past this post, it was not meant to be personal or upset you in any way.

I'm more likely to think my dog can hear something in the distance that I can't, than think he can predict a death in the family.
