Tailgate adventures episode question

A group of us just watched the episode with Joe newlin our question is this. After the first tree made we noticed that back at the corn field Joe was holding a dead coon in hand and it's not yet kill season for the leaves was fully on and the corn was still green. Why was the coon dead? Did it jump out to a coon squaller?

Well the host David says in the episode to joes son " well that went quick now we can get you home before cur few and Joe says yeah before he gets in trouble" then they said we might have time to make another drop. Now we were just wondering for they did not have a gun show a gun or shoot a gun and that's why I said to my friends they must have squalled that coon out now Ben if Joe lives in Indiana then iwould bet this is in Indiana but if he is hunting in Michigan we would still like to know how the coon was harvest and is it politcal not to show the harvest?

On the web-site it clearly says they were hunting in southern Michigan. Even if they were in Indiana they can take a coon out of season if it's a nuicense destroying crops, using legal methods of course.

Thanks James we watched the tv episode and I have not visited the website. So how was it harvested and why did they not show the kill that would ad to the show? Political maybe? Btw James if you have a jepradation permit to kill coons for nuisance and damage you better not be doing it in Indiana while coon hunting or you may get a ticket!!

There is no legal way to kill a coon in Indiana with a hound other than during the taking season. There are no nuisance permits for coons for crop damage. 312 IAC 9-3-15 allows a person to kill a fur bearer that is discovered damaging property and requires the person to notify the DNR director or conservation officer within 72 hours. This was clarified by both Fish and Wildlife and the Law enforcement division of the DNR that this does not apply to hound hunters "assisting" farmers and property owners protect their crops..

Non residents cannot take coons in Michigan until Nov 15.

Taken from the Michigan DNR site:

"Nonresident Fur Harvester License

Nonresidents may hunt and trap furbearing animals only from Nov. 15 through the regular season closing dates. A nonresident cannot purchase a license before Nov. 15. Residents of Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and the province of Ontario, cannot purchase a Michigan nonresident fur harvester license."

I agree ask Joe and David, I am sure they can explain.

They were hunting in Southern Michigan for that episode and season was in at the time of taping in Michigan. We do live in northern Indiana and it doesn't take long to get to Michigan from here. I'll take your "bet" Brad.Have a Merry Christmas.

I do not have a permit, I don't need one. I hardly ever kill any, maybe 1 or 2 a year (in season with license). I am aware that you cannot use a hound to take game out of season, that's why I said "using legal methods." I also learned last year possession of a coon out of season is illegal without a permit, even roadkill. That being said, I agree Joe would be the best person to answer.

You can stir the pot if you like Brad, but trust me there was nothing "illegal", immoral, or even "shady" about how that episode was shot.

Dave mentioned "getting Josh home before Curfew" to explain why he is not with us in the rest of the episode. But trust me, he was there every minute of the filming, but spent most of it behind the camera and not in front of it, just as he mentions my name in several episodes, but this is the first episode in which you have seen me on TV.

WE TELL THE TRUTH, GOOD OR BAD!

Joe I am not stirring the pot. I do not have satelite, cable, or any other form of tv other than regular tv, even though they are a dish mounted to the top of my house. A little over a year ago we decided that would be an extra 50 dollars a month in our pocket. My friend Trevor bought a house in the country, he ordered satelite, I asked him last week if he would please tape an episode of Tailgate adventures ( I have not seen an episode till last night, actually he got to tape 2 episodes because the dvr tapes every one of them now) since he has one of them dvrs or whatever you call them. Last night I was invited over to his house at 8pm to watch the episode that was taped and the Cowboys and Saints game. When I get over there the boys that was there watch the episode with us. I did not even notice the dead coon in your hands Joe until one of the guys said how did he kill that coon he is holding we didnt see a gun. So we rewind it and watched it all again, I said I would get on the message board and try to find out but I said they must have squalled it out since no gun is seen. Joe I am asking you or David right here in the open, why was that coon dead in your hands after the tree, what state were you hunting at, how was the coon harvested gun or squalled out, how come the harvest was not shown (they show the killing of deer, turkey and other game on hunting shows, I thought maybe Tailgate Adventures wanted to stay politically correct and not show no killing, is this true) This is no big deal or secret just trying to understand the outcome of that coon in the episode, I would really like to share with my friends last night an explanation can you or David please let us know. I am sure it can be shared here on this message board.

I really enjoyed the shows, David did a good job with youth casts in the UKC hunt, and Joes young dogs sounded and looked real good, I like to see the young dogs work. Since these are the only 2 shows I have seen, I hope to see the shows in the winter with no leaves and hopefully showing the taking of coons, it will for surely ad to the show, you all can always show the harvest and edit it in a politically fashion way to not offend some. Btw that commercial for that dog box to slide in and out of the truck was a first time for me to see that style, that was cool. And all the other coon hunting commercials was real neat, where is F and T Fur Harvesters located and do they have good client base relationship like Valley Creek? THanks again FandT Tailgate Adventures and congratulations on a successful first season I hope its get to be long lasting, I just might have to get cable again LOL.

Joe after reading your post again, I never mentioned anything about being "immoral, illegal or shady" I was just asking if the coon was squalled out. A coon can be caught on the ground, dug up out of the hole, I have seen them jump out when you get to the tree, and squalled out, all that can happen even though its not coon season. When I saw you holding the coon and could tell it was a freshly loose body hanging from your hand, I laughed and said opps I be that was not suppose to be in the film, but it is and I feel that as a fan and new person to watch the episode that it can be explained. Thanks agian David.

I sent you a PM with this information, but you insist on me posting it...

We have made a choice to not include the killing of coon on the show. It's a two fold choice. One...most of the episodes were filmed during a time of the year when game can not be killed. We are the ONLY "catch and release" hunting show on TV.....kind of a novel approach don't you thinK/

Secondly, yes, the coon was harvested in a legal manner, and no....Dave nor I, neither being Michigan residents harvested the coon, but rather our host did. He is a license carrying Michigan resident ...but the other "factor" is that we don't have a firearms sponsor. We did indeed film the harvest of the coon that you saw me holding. But that footage is going to be used in some promotional material for the show that will be used to market the show to potential sponsors, namely the manufacturers of firearms.

Many folks think that the production of a television show is similar to a home movie...that could not be further from the truth. There are many more considerations, one of the most important ones is "product placement". We owe our sponsors and the folks that buy advertisement certain things, and one of those is that we use on the show what is being sold in the ads on the show.

In the "heat of battle" with the lights on, and the little red light on the camera, I forgot to put the coon down. We had just walked off from that tree, and I carried the coon about 15 feet, stopped and shot that scene. If we had shot the scene again, you would not have seen the coon as I would have remembered to lay it off camera...but it was a directing error on my part. As the director of the show, I'll take responsibility for the confusion.

In one of the episodes, a coon did in fact bail out of the tree, and we caught that on camera and showed it to everyone. Just as we showed bear climbing down out of trees and running off unharmed.

The bottom line is that this is a television production. We strive to "keep it real", but you have to understand that we film for several hours, and you see only 20 minutes and thirty seconds of "action" from that several hours.

Joe, thank you for responding, I hardly ever check my PM, if you would have said to check my pm I would have, for I hardly ever, rarely get a pm. Believe it or not I came to your alls defense last night when my friend brought it up by saying it must have been squalled out, I would not believe for a second that David with the cameras and equipment would risk losing it all. But when one of the buddys said that David said we better get you home before curfew and you backed him saying or josh will get in trouble (I did not catch it lol, I am to deaf) then I was confused and wondering that is why I brought the question forward. These are things to learn by. In future episodes these kinds of details, such as what state, introduce the host or at least mention a first name ect...can help.

Well, Well, what do you know, another thing Mr. Hall can do better than everyone else, Now he is a show director. We finally have a show on our sport and the very first time he finally sees one of the shows, you geussed it, he whines and complains or tries to create problems. Mr. Hall if the coon could have been caught on the ground or squalled out of the tree, then leave it at that. I see you both are from Indiana, so you must know Mr. Newlin, so why not pick up the phone and call him on this matter. But, NO you have to come on here and keep driving it into the ground until you have an answer. I believe the shows are very good and Mr. Newlin and staff are doing fine job. Thank god you don't have cable or we would be putting up with you everytime the show is on, complaining!!! Mr. Newlin, please don't feel bad, the United Kennel Club don't know how to run a hunt either, according to Mr. Hall's standards.

Hey Joe, best show yet. Not sure if it was because you were in front of the camera instead of behind it. Nice job, says something about your breeding program. You're doing something right. And the advice about not being ttooo demanding on a pup and keeping it fun and games is something that everyone should keep in mind. Looking forward to the next show. Jack Dobson

Well I might as well jump in here to confirm Joe's explanation, as I was there, and Brad is right we have way too much to lose, to risk it over a coon!

We were in Michigan and our host is a resident coon hunter. He got several coon that night and we "borrowed" one of them for some filming for another project. As many of you know, Michigan's hunting season starts in October when the leaves are still very much on the trees, especially this year.

We have made a conscious effort to not film many episodes where we killed game, for a couple reasons:

- First and foremost most of our season was filmed during running season.
- We don't have a firearms sponsor, so there's no need for product placement.
- If for no other reason, a gun is just another thing to carry to the woods on top of a hundred pounds of camera gear, and after we film the game in the tree the hunt is basically over. It's not going any where and we all know the dogs got the job done. With deer and turkey hunting there's still the potential for the hunter to miss the shot, so it's not over until the game is done.

And... like many episodes Josh was there most of the night helping out, but by the time we got to Cube's tree, it was getting late.
