Tree Dogs

what you think , do you have to kill a lot of coon to your dog to keep them treeing good or does it matter how many you get down to them ?

Probably depends on the dog and the dog's breeding. My dogs generally die of old age having chewed on less than 3 or 4 dozen in their life. If they needed more than that I wouldn't be able to keep them.... I just don't have that many coon.

Posted by on 11-06-2008 11:57 PM:

I think you do for some. I wouldn't care to feed that kind though.

I kill 60 or 70 to my bitch each season and there are things that I don't like about her when she gets alot of fur. She definately gets tight mouthed to the extreme with a lot of fur. And she doesn't need any of them but I guess I do.

Yep. I remember the 60's hunting with my Dad. There were far fewer deer back then but alot more deer chases. I think these Walker hounds today are so tree minded that they don't want to run anything that can't climb. Or atleast they are far less likely to.

I think the hunter needs the coon more than the dogs do... With that said I think if the dog does a good job on a track they should be rewarded... And if they pop one up then they don't really need the reward as much...

With that said I rolled one out tonight that the dog didn;t work hard on. LOL

That the reason they are so many pups culd hand made tree dogs

Posted by amazeagle on 11-07-2008 07:56 PM:

Pups are born with what they're going to be. I had a line of dogs that would have never needed a coon. Some would kepp treeing while the other dogs were wooling a coon. I had one that wanted nothing to do with a coon shot out but would tree a sackful on any given night. We need the coon shot out more that a proper bred hound does, trust me.

Roger,

I think that there is a time in a pup's progression where "fur" does more good than harm, and then there is a time when it does more harm than good.

As for older dogs....I've seen instances where it made a difference in the way a dog operates.

I believe that it is as much how a dog is started as anything. A dog that is started with lots of fur, seems to always need it...

I agree but you have to admitt summer hunting is alot tuffer on a hound than winter, and the woods dont even smell the same, there is a lot more to separate in the summer than the winter, Sent is stronger in most cases , thats why i like to hunt erly mornings in the hot summer months .

as far as killing coons if i hunted where you could tree 8 or 10 a nightd hardly ever kill a coon, but here you are doing good if you tree more than one a night jmop

My general practice has been about one coon a month regardless of whether it was during the fall and I'm out 15-20 times that month or middle of winter when it's maybe 2-3 times in a month. I hunt year around in my state and have only a moderate coon population.

This has worked well for the couple lines of dogs I've worked. When I've had problems is starting a young dog on a routine of one coon a month and then suddenly dropping out one a week thinking maybe more might make a good young dog even better. Not true has been my experience and it can cause problems that have to be slowly worked back out of the dog. For that reason the gun stays in the truck unless I intentionally take it to use it as planned.

I've got one now that the more coons you kill for him the more he wants to slick tree.

my dog is 6 years old and only had about 3 coon shot to her, and i only let her taste one, and she still tree's hard... i think it all depends on the dogs

so your saying your dog doesnt operate differently when you reward it??

Posted by BRYAN J on 11-08-2008 06:10 AM:

Some dogs may vary but I would bet majority of tree dogs sure don't need alot of coon to keep doing whatn they are bred to do, TREE!
Just my thought but I would think shooting alot of coon then not you'll find the hound going back to the same tree again and again if you don't shoot it out. If that made since!

Some of the hunts Ive been too I have seen dogs keep going back after the tree is scored. I think it may be from shooting every coon out the dog trees.

Dogs need rewarded but not every time. Pups different story.

yep he don't need them anymore, but i normally let him fight at least one a month.

when i first got shaker i put about 30 coons out to him to straighten him up for competition hunts because he was an IDIOT but after that he don't need them anymore he operates the same either way.

now my pup is a different story i will knock prolly 30 coons out to him this season but season don't start till nov 10 here.
