Over looking local dogs
For the sake of discussion, I was just wondering why it seems some folks just seem to constantly overlook local dogs when purchasing a new dog or pup, or when they are looking to breed to a stud. It seems to me that even though they seem to study some of these dogs beforehand they seem to overlook the local dogs that may be as equal or better than some of these more distant dogs.

Off the top of my head I know of a couple of guys are are real good guys and know what they want in a hound and aren't afraid to do they're homework and spend some money trying to find what they are looking for. I just can't figure out why it seems they completely rule out some local dogs.
I'm not talking about overlooking some local mixed up or poorly bred dogs. These local dogs are bred as well as some of the other dogs they go out and buy or breed to. So I guess the guys with that local stock didn't neccessarily stay local either but there are a couple of guy that have got me thinking lately.
One of them has bred to some big name studs all over the country and has gotten some decent dogs out of those crosses yet none of those dogs met his standard but recently he mentioned a stud dog was is gaining a good reputation nationally and is from a good cross and his owned by a "big name" hunter and breeder. What gets me is that a guy less than 10 miles from him has a littermate to the same stud he considering driving across 3 states to breed to. I haven't hunted with either dog but IMO opinion the difference in the 2 dogs is that one is a Gr Nt owned by a big name hunter/breeder who advertises regularly and is located miles away, the other is a Nt Ch owned by a respected local hunter just down the road but the 2 dogs are littermates. I can't figure that one out.
Another guy has spent a boatload of money buying a bunch of young dogs out of a big name stud that is "too valuable to hunt" and is out one of the better crosses ever. Most of these dogs are very young but are showing a lot of promise. These young dogs are not All Grand but close. Yet, there are plenty of nice dogs and litters around that are breed just as well that he would never consider. Some dogs he has mentioned to buy aren't bred nearly as well as some of the local dogs but someone advertised them for sale in a magazine, I can't figure that one out either.
I guess I think I read it in Walk w/ Wick Vol 2, where Wick said something about some of the better dogs are right there in your backyard. He mentioned that when he was looking for breeding stock he may go out of state but he went there and asked around about what the local boys were hunting. He would track down that stock, hunt with it and when it worked out he would add it to his stock.
I guess this subject is just something that has had my gears turning lately. I'm not downgrading the dogs these guys chose, it works for them. Some of them are real nice dogs, but I don't think they are any better than some of the local dogs or dogs being brought to the local hunts.
We're not in Indiana where it seems there is a stud dog or 10 in every other zipcode, I guess if we were than there would be no excuse for leaving the state. LOL.
Any thoughts?

I agree. I want to hunt a dog out of stock that has been proven in the same situation I'm going to be hunting my dog in. I'll admit, I look to look at papers and see a bunch of big names and titles but I'm not out looking for it. If that "big name" blood is readily available I guess it is hard to overlook sometimes but I'm wouldn't burn up a bunch of gas going to get it.
Dan, I've looked at the ped on your dog and it backs up what you just said. I admire that.

i'm sure
there is lines of dogs that would work up here, but there is also alot of hot nosed pop up type dogs that wouldn't be worth a crap in my area in the middle of winter!! if they can't track to catch and start a cold track and get it moving they won't work for me!!

Part of it might be that it is easier to get rid of pups out a "big name" stud, especially up here where we are out of the loop. I know my dad has raised a couple litters out of Nt Ch females who were bred to Gr Nts that are reputable well known studs but are studs that were closer than the "big name" studs. Real nice litters out of good dogs, majority of the pups were sold dirt cheap to hidehunters. It is tough to sell pups up here no matter who you breed to but I bet if you took an average female and bred it to that the latest fad stud dog than you'd get rid of the pups a lot quicker and for a better price than taking a good titled local female and breeding it to a good titled local male.
dave i have bought 4 dogs from kentucky in my life and when the snow flys i got to leave them at home not saying anything bad about southern dogs ive had enough to know they can do it up here i got one now that does fine soem just have probs here when the deep snow hits

I wish I could name names to explain what I'm getting at but I'm not going too.
I'm not saying these dogs they choose can't get it done either. I'm just saying that there are local dogs bred almost as good and are proven coondogs in the same conditions that said individuals hunt in and the local dogs are more economically & geographically available but are overlooked because they want a pup from Mr Big Shot out of Gr Nt Big Time Stud Dog or they want to breed to Gr Nt Big Time Stud dog even overlook local littermates to Gr Nt Big Time Stud dog or local pups that are closely related to Gr Nt Big Time Stud dog.
I know folks, I talk too much! LOL!
dan,jim what breeding would you say you hunt in all
that snow.house,finley river etc
alot of lipper in the one i spent the big money on but cant blame the dog i dontthink he ever saw snow before the way he acted but it was long ago when there was still trail on a dog and he looked good there so my bad
