Pet Meds On Line?

Little confused here. There are several places on line to buy prescription medications for your pets. I will use Bravacto as an example. You can purchase the chewable pill cheaper on line than you can at your vet. Thing is you have to take your dog to the vet and get a prescription. Say you have six dogs. You have to take six dogs to the vet to be looked at and then get a prescription for each one. By the time you do that, you sure haven't saved any more with on line medications that require a prescription.

Also your asking your vet to check six dogs but plan on spending your money on medications somewhere else. Isn't that kind of a slap in the face to the vet. I don't mind finding the cheapest medications, I just don't want to see the vet and tell him I need some of his services for a prescription but don't want to spend my money there.

Heck I already know they have fleas. It just seems a waste of time an money to take six dogs to the vet for him to confirm it, so I can go somewhere else and buy medicine.

Is this really what everyone that buys prescription medicines on line do?

Well Bruce, here is what I do. I skip the vet, the prescriptions, all that and just order everything from Canadian suppliers. CanadaVet is the one I have used lately. Heartgatd Plus, Bravecto, Simparica, all that stuff without a script and the low online pricing. The only downside is it usually takes 3 weeks to get it because of the extra time clearing customs. But I use it alot and save alot of money.

ONLINE MEDS

Bruce I use Pet Bucket.com. I use Bravecto also for fleas and ticks. I buy the biggest you can buy for the 88 to 128 pound dog and break it in half. It last 3 months and cost per hound per month to keep them Flea and Tick Free works out to 7 bucks a month per hound. No prescription needed, shipped to the house free and no taxes. Usually comes out of the UK and takes about 2 weeks to get it. Been doing this for 2 years and my hounds haven't had a Flea or Tick on them. Might have to call your Bank and loosen up the Security settings on your Debit or Credit Card for the Transaction to go through but other than that it's a Hassel Free way to get Great meds a Lot cheaper shipped right to your door.

OK, I am not pointing fingers nor am I trying to change peoples mind.

I am putting out some food for thought.

Everyone wants things cheaper. I understand that. Nothing wrong with that at all.

BUT is that on line store going to be there at 2am when your dog fell of a bluff?

Are they going to take care of that pup that's hung up in the birth canal?

Maybe I am one of the very lucky ones but my vet is a great guy and I call him a friend as well. He supports his family on his vet practice. I use him for everything and he is very reasonable with his pricing. He's not free but he's not big city expensive Xray everything and every test imaginable either. He hunts beagles.

Anyway I think it would be a slap in the face to him for me to do that to him, and it would take from his income and send my dollars out of state.

I try to shop local with other things too, I go to the local hardware store instead of Lowes, and the guy that owns the hardware store lets me coon hunt.

I go to the local feed store instead of Tractor Supply and the woman that owns the feed store lets me coon hunt.

That kind of relationship seems to work out for me, and if it costs me an extra dollar for a bag of feed or whatever I gladly pay it to keep the local businesses local. It's also nice to be able to go just down the road and get something and not have to go all the way into town

That's just my take on it

I have yet to figure out why some of these meds need a prescription for a dog, like heart worm prevention, when you can buy the same meds in a horse wormer without a prescription.

Law... probably as a result of a lobbyist.

I agree 100% and is how I conduct local business, I support them. BUT when it comes to a vet, we don't have a good ole country type minded vet to use anymore. If I had someone like Dr Allen around here you can bet your bottom dollar he would get my business.

The vets around here force me to figure out how to make do for myself. They want to run 16 tests unrelated to what I have a dog in there for, and 3 weeks later if I need a simple refill on something as simple as an ear treatment cream, they again need to see the dog first. $230 per trip is about as cheap as I can get away with, and that's after refusing to let them test or give shots for 9 other things. I understand they have bills to pay, but so do I, and I've been around long enough to spot when I'm being milked for money because I'm a "pet owner" and they think I will pay it.

I have seen that with some vets, they run what I call a "fru fru dog" practice. I am very lucky that I have the vet that I do because I would avoid that kind of thing as well.

I became so frustrated that I talked to a horse and buggy Mennonite man, basically Amish without the beard, and explained what I was looking for in a Vet, (pretty much just some standard common sense) and he recommended a woman Vet about 30 miles from here.

She mostly deals with large animals but I want to put a call into her and see if she would take any dogs on if I needed her. I imagine she hits some of the dairy farms close by here.

I was just going to post something similar. Can I get that stuff cheaper online? Sure.

But . . . I have a wonderful relationship with my 2 vet practice. I have their home and cell phone numbers for emergencies. My husband hunts with one of them. They have come in for me on a Sunday afternoon to section a bitch in trouble. They have come to euthanize a geriatric dog after hours when it became clear she just couldn't wait to be released from her pain and confusion. They didn't send me to the cold and outrageously expensive emergency clinic who don't know and love our dogs as they do.

We have worked hard over the years to create our relationship as doctor and client, and yes, friends. We respect each other for the knowledge and experience each brings to the table. To me, that is worth way more than a few extra bucks for heartworm preventative.

My Vet actually directed me to an online vet pharmacy recently. He said the margins / markups have gotten so thin for smaller practices that can't buy in large volumes that it is hardly worth his time to count out the pills not to mention tying up $$ by stocking inventory of dozens or more meds that he may or may not sell.

He said he writes prescriptions fairly often for people to go to online sources and doesn't hold it against them. They can get it cheaper and it's less hassle and overhead for him.

Completely understand and agree with these post as I had a Vet from the Past I felt the same way about. Country Vet, Small Building, Very Nice and Thorough and knew what he was doing. BUT, that has ALL changed around here. That Vet passed away Years ago and has been replaced by Big Fancy Building, Vet that Knows It All and talks to the Customer like they don't know Anything, giving more haircuts and shampoos to the house yappers than anything, run you in and out of there as fast as cows at a sale barn and lighten the load in your WALLET QUICK! I would LOVE to have the Relationship I used to have but Relationship's aren't Everything when your getting charged TWICE the PRICE. I don't care if I'm married to his Sister, I'm shopping somewhere else! As for Heartguard or similar products online is not even HALF of what the Vet charges, that's more than, " a few bucks ". Vet will give you what you need based on the weight of your dog, online buy the biggest they have and break in half. Save a LOT of money. All made in the same place, Georgia, USA. Shipped Free, Tax free, to the Door. I used to have a Shop I trusted to work on my cars and trucks but just like with the good ole country Vet that has all changed too. Last trip there I asked about rear shocks for my Ford FX 4. They wanted 234 apiece for them and 70 bucks to put them on for a total of 541. Well, 70 bucks seems like a great price to put them on BUT, that's where they get you HOOKED. Got home and shopped online and got the SAME EXACT SHOCKS for 194.98 shipped free tax free. FOR BOTH SHOCKS! Their price for both were 468 and I paid 194.98!! Put them on myself in an hour. I know this don't pertain to ONLINE PET MEDS but it shows you just how much savings is out there if you take the time to look. As for the Vet coming in at night or Sundays to take care of Ol Blue in an Emergency, well my hound Bo had to have their help on a Sunday night and they took care of him and I'm Grateful BUT, it wasn't FREE. They still got paid over 600 bucks for their time. And for the ones that say, well they didn't have to, how long do you think they would be in business if they didn't try to save your beloved pet in emergency situations? Not Long. Most of us have had to work OVERTIME, LONG HOURS and NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS at some point in our lives with the jobs we had. It just comes with being responsible and you got PAID for it. VET is no different. Understand a great relationship with your Vet is Super to have and if you want to spend the extra money for the meds well it's your money spend it how you like. But it's a LOT MORE than a FEW EXTRA BUCKS. Just trying to show the other side of the story and that the ones shopping online are SAVING A LOT OF MONEY and that we aren't just tight wad, penny pinchers looking to save just a Nickel. Love my Hounds More than most and as much as Anybody and when it comes to an Emergency Situation for them, saving a dollar is the LAST THING on my mind. But for their general, overall health, shopping online saves hundreds if not thousands a year.
