14 months old and won't tree

I have a 14 mo. old English pup. He can track and tree a coon on his own. Most of the time, he does not bark on track or tree. Thanks to Garmin I can find him. He has had coons several times. When I arrive at the tree, he is either on the tree or walking around the tree looking up, but will not bark. He has barked some, but not anywhere near enough to call it treeing. As an old timer once told me, "There ain't much call for a mute coon dog".
This is my first ever dog and I have started him from a pup. He has an awesome nose as far as I can tell. Don't want to give up, but am becoming frustrated.

Suggestions?

I would definately show him a caged coon&hang the cage just out of reach.I think he would almost have to bark.

Check His ears, may bother Him to bark..

my buddy got a blue gyp she's over a yr had a bunch of coon knock to her last season she will run track but won't bark a lick on tree he just keeps giving her coon i keep telling him she don't tree ty her back and don't let her have even a smell of a coon if she don't tree but he don't listen to good gonna give her all this season id done sent her to dog heaven if she belong to me

Its in the dog. Shooting coons out does not make a coonhound. A good coon hound does not need a lot of coons shot out to it

The coon is worth more alive than dead You cant run a dead coon

It sounds like your only hunting the dog alone????..Have you knocked any coon out to the dog???...I had a dog like him. One night he got ate up by a coon and from then on he was a wide open track and tree...LOL..Theres a few things you can do to get him to open up...

I had one do the same thing I started tying him back at the tree and not letting him have any of the coon it took a while but he became a every breath tree dog. I sure wouldnt give up on him.

I actually hunt him with some older, very accurate dogs. The thing that frustrated me is that he is very independent, especially on the first drop. Second and third drop he is more likely to hunt with the old dogs. Hejaz had a few coons and a possum or two in the trees he is standing at. I know he can run a track and find the right tree. I just want him to let me know. I have asked a few old timer coon hunters around my town, and they have said tie him back and knock coons out to the old dogs. I think this may carry some weight since there is almost 110 years of coon hunting between the both of them and it has been Rex recommended on here.

if possible

if your able and can do it safely, climb up the tree aways and squall, shake limbs, whack the tree with a limb you busted.....................this is if he is by hisself. if hes with the other dogs they may not be letting him get up on the tree, they could be tree jackers or just tree bullies. If they are not then I would recommend tieing him back, letting other dogs have it, with pups I always leave the coon hanging in the tree it cam from, never on the ground

I've hunted with the two old dogs for 5 and 2 years. Never any problems, even around coons on the ground and with my pup on the tree. He does this while he is alone at a tree as well. Just looks up like he's waiting for a coon to fall out. I tied him back on one and I got a few barks out of him. Going to hopefully knock some out on him while he's tied back and try hanging it up to get him barking. He goes crazy barking on a cage coon like he's just gotta have it.

If he barks a lot on a coon hung up or one on the ground with the old dogs, should I give it to him, or keep him hungry for it for several more times?

when you see that hes treed sneak in to him and dont let him know your around,just find a good spot to rest and wait on him to bark.when he barks get to him quick,make sure theres a coon there and if its there is pet him up and let him know thats what you want.i dont think i would ever go to him if he aint barking,hes got to want that coon so bad that he will bark.

Had one just like this several years ago. Hunted him 1 full kill season and would open on track but never would bark up on tree. I will never spend a whole season on another one doing this.

I have and would try tying this pup to the tree (if coon is seen). Then go back to truck, drink some coffee or a soda. Needs to be far enough from you that he is not just listening for you. The pup should feel like he has been left so tie him with a lead that cannot be chewed or broke. He will be barking because he is scared and hollering for help. When you get back to him pet him up good and knock coon out. After a couple times like this he should start putting things together. I have noticed that dogs like this tend to throw pups like this

Thanks everyone for the useful info. Don't think telling me not to yell at my dog is very helpful in getting him to tree. Ky show girl, I've tried petting him up real good and talking to him with a really excited tone and that makes him get on the tree and whine some and even bark a time or two, but he won't bark but a time or two before I get to him either. I did get to knock one out to the old dogs with him there tied back and he barked very well for me. We will see how tonight goes. I'm hoping he is right on the edge of figuring out what it is that I want him to do.

you never know what will fire 1 up.try shooting 1 out where he
can see it fall of course i have had rabbits run threw the back
yard and fire 1 up.

I have 9 month old English blue tick female pup that will not open on track and would not bark on a tree. I hunt her with dads 7 year old walker and 2 year old walker and I have put a few out on her. I had a guy tell me to tie her back and knock them out to the old dogs. Well 2 weeks ago the old dog put one up and the pup was with him at the tree not doing nothing as usual and I tied her back and knocked it out to the old dogs and she went insane. I turned her loose after dad hung it in a tree and she barked every breath. Last night dads old dog hit and she went with him she barked a few barks on track and did pretty dang good on the tree. I tied her back at the tree and she barked pretty hard for a while. But it was a den tree so we couldn't find it to knock it out. So give it a try it made a world of difference in my pup. If the dog is at the tree it knows what to do but if you are knocking them out to it without it doing any of the work it will never make anything was what I was told anyway. so far they were right.
