Sorry to hear about your fall, wish you a speedy recovery. That why i don't climb a tree and jump them out, have found out my 30 year's of hunting that is a good way to get a dog to leave the tree after it tree's.The dog just want's to keep looking for a track. My opinion on the competion hunting is don't start, have been down that road.Alot of people will try and cheat and if you don't know all of the RULE's your just wasting your time and money.Just look at the post on here about question's on how would you score this, how do you scratch a mean dog etc. There are so many diffrent way's that people try and bend the rules it is not funny.I know that there will be alot of people that will post negative thing's about what i have said, but i know how people are at hunt's.They can be your hunting buddy all week but when you show up at a hunt and get them in your cast forget it,everyone for them self.Everyone want's to win no matter what the cost, right or wrong they will try everything that they have learned from the cheater's.So like i said that is just my opinion,so if you enjoy coon hunting just hunt the hair off your dog and enjoy them. That way you don't have to wonder who is going to STAB YOU IN THE BACK.And just because a dog has a title don't mean that it is any better than one without a title, most of the handler's should get the title not the dog.Alot of slick handler's out there.GOOD LUCK,like i said just my opinion every one else will have different opinion's.

you need to be able to quote the rules line for line know the rule number and letter you can get on ukc front page, hunting programs ,coonhounds.rules good luck and get well soon

There are lots of good people in the night hunts. There are also some that cheat. My advice is get a score card and memorize the back you can also order the advisor from UKC book store that will help but it costs $15, I think. The best thing I can tell you know your dog. Be a good sport, no one wins every time and not always does the best dog win. Do your best to see the cast you are on is run honestly. Be honest yourself. When people say "he's fun to hunt with, because he knows the rules and when you're in a cast with him you know it will be honest." your huints will be more fun and I can tell you your repetition will follow you in the hunts good or bad. Good luck. And have fun.

Comp. Hunts

Just be honest on what your dog does and call him properly.Your integrity is more important that a dishonest win, always remember that as other people will remember that to and the word spreads good or bad.

Hope you get well soon and wish you the best of luck.

Like everybody else on here, first and foremost know your dog. Read the rules, then read the rules again, then again. Then practice applying the rules with your buddies when you pleasure hunt with them.

After you have done all that, here is my tip of the week (so to speak)- When calling your dog struck, Call (benny struck), not (strike benny) When calling your dog treed, Call (Benny Treed) not (Tree Benny)

The reason for this is that many judges, (Not All) will award the strike and/or tree, to the dogs name they here called first. So if you and another handler are calling your dogs at about the same time, the judge will have a tendancy to award the points to the dogs name that they hear first. If the judge cannot tell who struck first or treed first, they will then split the strike/tree with whomever you are calling against. But over the years I have seen this simple little calling stratagy benifit the person calling the dogs name first.

Good Luck!

Well, this piece of advice will serve you well in competition and pleasure hunting.
Always keep your safety and others safety first and foremost. I do not care if you are young and feel invincible, never do anything as silly as climbing a tree and try to physically dislodge a coon from a tree. That would be hard enough to do in the daytime let alone at night. Was it dark when you done that?
I heard of a guy falling out of a tree while coonhunting and he died.

Forget it

Pleasure hunt and have a good time. You gona be disapointe when you start comp hunting. few GOOD guys and a lot of the OTHERS. And that is the truth.

local clubs

Look for a local club, ukc can help you find any in your area, call the contact person and ask about the club and see if they have club hunts, if they do then go as a guest and see if this will help you start you on your comp. expieriance. If you like the club and members then join and support that club.( More comp. hunters need to support local clubs, with out them there will not be any comp. hunts.

Here's some advice, and its worth exactly what you'll pay for it.

1. Just start going to hunts. Pay for your education and you'll appreciate it more than if someone gives it to you.
2. Take ALL advice with a grain of salt.
3. Buy a stopwatch, and use it. Use it pleasure hunting. Use it competition hunting. Time your bathroom breaks. Well, maybe not but you get the point.
4. Know your dog.
5. Know your dog.
6. Know your dog.
7. Know your dog.
8. Don't let naysayers on message boards discourage you from going to hunts. Chances are they know less about nite hunts that they're telling you and allowed themselves to get screwed once (or thought they did) and then quit.
9. Hold your ground. If you KNOW you're right, don't give an inch. However, be d@#$ sure you're right or you're about to look like an idiot.
10. Have fun. If you start to take it too seriously or too personally, you'll ruin it for yourself.

hate to hear about you fall, hope you recover well..like the others said rules is number one.know them inside and out and how to interpret them the corect way,be honest with yourself and others and be confident in yourself as a handler (that will come over time) and be confident in your dog and know him like the back of your hand.with you being young you may be pushed around on occasion dont let that get you down or get discouraged and quit, know the rules and stand up for yourself and call them on a bad call if they try and put one over on you.it's sad to say but this will happen at some point and time when you first start out.as others said go to your local club and start out in some club hunts or spectate with someone on a few hunts befor jumping in to it.you will make some bad calls and make a few mistakes when you first start out and blow a cast win or two just consider those
entry fees as learning experiances..i cant strees enough about knowing the rules, know them inside and out befor you start competition hunting,i hope this helps some and i wish you luck in the future.

Thank you guys i really appreciate all the help I'm getting me a rule book and gonna learn it from cover to cover for sure i have a dog I know very well that I wanna take out to the comps I'm a honest guy and won't be no cheater or nothing I'm gonna call my dog how it is crushed body still ain't kept me out of the woods

Win some loose some, have fun.

I've been in the hunts and pleasure hunting for 20+ years. Learn the rules. Expect to loose some and win a few. Have a good time.
1. Read the back of a score card several times, most clubs have plenty of extra's, they'll give you one.
2. Ask a nice guy at the club which cast would be best to spectate on, spectate several casts and get the feel of it first before handling.
3. Know your dog very well.
4. Practice with a score card with your hunting buddies on a pleasure hunt.
5. Most important when you start handling: Know that it is your dog that is competing not you. If your dog screws up then you be first to admit it. If you screw up admit it. Follow the rules.
6. Call it like it is and don't expect to always win.
Over a long time you'll make friends and have a good time and you'll own a few NT Ch's. These guys that come out going to make a name real fast usually don't last more than a year or two.
I've hunted in several different states, good guys are everywhere and bad guys are few. It's kinda like the mean dogs, there's a few, but if your dog gets in with mean dogs alot, you may have the mean dog. Same goes with handlers. Period.
Be good and have fun for a lifetime.
That's been my experiance. I love it.

Cody,

I've been competition hunting since the hunts were 3 hour hunts, and we would have 100 registered dogs on a Saturday night UKC hunt, I've been at it a while....

You have received some very sage advice already.... Probably the most important things that I will reiterate are to know the rules and know your dog....(that is the most important in my mind). If you don't know your dog well enough and be HONEST WITH YOURSELF about what you dog is doing....that is where most problems come from. If your dog is an every breath tree dog, and shuts up on the tree, chances are it's moving.....if you are minued when the dog moves, take the deserved minus....don't defend the dog....

Know the rules, and remember that one of the most important words in the rulebook, is also one of the least remembered word. HONOR, they are called HONOR rules....not all folks are honorable in a competition...be honorable at all times. The way I see it, it isn't worth arguing about, they have a hunt somewhere every Friday and Saturday night. I am out to have fun, to enjoy my dog, and to enjoy the company of folks who are out to enjoy their dog....If I'm not having fun any more, I'm gonna put mine in the truck and try again another night.

Remember that the best dog does NOT always win, just like the fastest car in a NACAR race is not always the first to cross the finish line. Learn to appreciate good dog work, even if your dog is not the one doing it....compliment your competitor when their dog does a good job, even when you are mad at your dog for not performing well.... Remember that about 75% of folks that enter on a given night will go home a "loser"....Which means that you are going to lose some nights....It's part of the game.

And the best advice I can give you.....learn to enjoy it for a "game". Learn the right and wrong way to handle situations, including how to question a call made by the judge. Know how to handle that occasional bully, troublemaker, and cheat. You will find very few of them, but when you do, they can sure ruin your night....knowing the proper way to deal with them will make things go smoother for you. Always shake the hand of the man that wins your cast, and never go home "mad".....It will make coming back next week a lot easier.

I really like number 8,here are a couple thing's that i have run into.On one hunt the judge said well we will just go over here about 40 yards from this old shed and cut loose.Yep it happned his dog got first strike, she went right up by shed and struck... Funny how that dog knew to go up by that old shed, what do you think ?So we treed that coon . got dogs and went to another area was walking down thru a cut hay field the judge said we will go up here on this little hill and cut dogs loose so we did. You will never guess what happned, sure did his dog had first strike again. this was in the middle of an open field. How many times dose this happen ? I knew what was going on, he had someone cutting coons out in front of us he knew just where to go.So we had like 45 or 50 minutes to hunt and he suddenly didn't have anymore ground around to hunt .I had some ground about 20 min away so we went there to hunt and guess what his dog didn't get first strike or tree.I was so glad when the other guys dog opned and slamed the tree that it wasn't funny. And yes the other MAN'S DOG WON OUR CAST,I DID SAY DOG not the cheating judge[handler]so when we got back to club house i asked the other hunter's if they knew what was going on out there. They said no but they never struck a coon in the middle of a hay field before,so i explained to them what was going on.Funny they agreed with me,then got to talking to other hunter's from the club and they said he dose that alot .So if you don't know someone don't pass judgement on them for not knowing anything about night hunting.I have seen quite a few thing's happen at the hunt's.Could tell this young man alot of crap that people pull .

Cody just remember don't take a knife to a gun fight, and that is what it is out there........ If you think your buddy is YOUR FRIEND just get him in your cast 95% of the people are out for blood when you turn those hound's loose. They need to make a sticker for on there truck window.NEVER MIND THE DOG BEWARE OF THE HANDLER. OR MY DOG IS NOT A GRANDNITE,BUT THE HANDLER SURE IS

Cracks me up how people NEVER get beat, they ALWAYS get cheated...
Here's some more free advice. Don't LET people cheat you and pack a coondog...AND beware the big bad handler!

Seriously, just be SURE you're right, then stand your ground if you have to. People only get cheated when they allow themselves to be. What kind of man (or woman for that matter) walks around for two hours, feeling like they're getting shafted, but doesn't do anything about it?

I'm certainly no big-time, high rolling competition hunter, but I do enjoy going when I can. I'll be ****ed if I'm gonna avoid something I enjoy doing because I'm scared some big bad handler is gonna take advantage of poor little old me...

I told you i got BEAT and I DON'Y CARE WHEN I GET BEAT AS LONG AS THEY DO IT HONEST..........Question how do you stepn coon is not cheating ? If your in a 4 dog cast 2 dog's run junk out of hearing and time out is called .The RULE SAY'S YOU HAVE 1HR TO GET YOUR DOG AND BE BACK TO MEETING PLACE.Correct? It took the judge & the other guy 1.5 hour's to get to the meeting place & it was the truck's.The judge said we was going to another place to hunt.I said no you 2 guy's can't hunt,BECAUSE THE RULE CLEARLY STATES 1 HR TO BE BACK AT THE MEETING PLACE WE AGREED ON. THE judge SAID THEY HAD THERE DOG'S ON THE LEAD BEFORE AN HOUR THAT THEY WAS GOING TO HUNT. I SAID THE RULE DIDN'T SAY ON THE LEAD,WAS TO BE AT MEETING PLACE.Told him that i wanted to go back to club house and talk to master of hound's.He said he knew all the rule's and he was right.I said no wan't to go back to master of hound's. So we all get in our truck's thinking everyone was going to club house .I turned right the other guy turnerright ,The judge and the other man with the trashy dog went left.Didn't think anything went back to culb house . the other man and myself was talking to master of hound's about what happned .THE MASTER OF HOUND'S SAID I WAS RIGHT. THAT THEY WAS SCRATCHED. We waited and waited & waited 3 hrs went by no JUDGE or other fellow showed up.Around 1am here they come big smile's,you fellow's should have kept hunting .BOY'S we treed 4 coon & seen them all.I said glad to hear that you 2 MFers JUST F***ED us . He said that he knew the rule's and he was right,I said glad to know that you know all the rule's. Go ahead and turn that score card in before the deadline .H*LL i even signed the card along with the other cast member.Should HAVE SEEN HIS FACE WHEN THE MASTER OF HOUND'S PUT THE BIG S ON THE CARD.HECK he wanted to argue with the master of hound's about the rule. Now my question to you is HOW DO YOU STOP THIS KIND OF SH*t .And the judge has alot of grandnite & nite champs. So how do you think the dog's got there titles . I bet they was all honest win's ,what do you think ? I stood my ground and still lost. Do you have an answer for that ? Standing your ground when you know your right dosen't mean your not going to take it up the A$$, and they don't grease you up first.
