i think you would keep them calm and get to a vet who can give them an antidote for rattle snake bite..

I carry a bottle of dexamethasone with me in the dog box and give them 1 CC under the skin. This takes the swelling down quickly. Talk to your vet and get a bottle it is cheap insurance. There is also a rattlesnake vaccine you can give them. Hope this helps.

had a buddy tell me to pour gas on a snake bite. not for sure what it does but he swore it works.

snake bite

I carry a a bottle of turpentine with me in the summer, if they get bit just cut a peice of rage soak it in turpentine and tie it over the snake bite. The next day you wont notice it.

Dexamethasone works wonders on snake bites. Never had a dog get bit by a rattlesnake but for copperhead bites you want even be able to tell they were bit the next morning. I give 3cc under the skin instead of 1 though, 3cc is what my vet reccommended.

turpentine

I dont know the biology of how it works, I just know my Grandpa used it, my dad used it, and I use it. I am guessing the turpentine draws out the toxins. I have seen many dogs bit and cured this way.

i have heard the gas tales etc....and they may work. Vet is the way to go, but if the bite comes from the eastern diamondback, dig a hole...

all that might work that is for sure but my grandad allways let the hounds run loose he said they would go eat a type of grass weed or some plant that would take care of it on its own. animals have a way of knowing this. i know some will say that is b/s but it work for him and i know it too be true i saw it many times as a young man growing up around his hounds. now if you have the time and all that take him to the vet but if it happens say 10 pm or latter it might be all said and done by time the vet opens up the next day

Vaccine available from Veterinarians

We'll have a Vet available at our coonhound event 19-20June & he'll be available to give Rattlesnake Vaccinations (vaccine also helps Copperhead & other Viper bites). This Vet lives in the hill country of Texas & vaccinates ALL his hounds as he's an avid hunter. Check with your Vet or send me an email & I'll give you contact info for obtaining this vaccine.

I did have a dog one time that got bit. It was too late or so I thought. Well, I was sitting there weeping like any guy would do with my bottle of gas. Than I got an idea if alil gas on the leg would work maybe just maybe alot down the throat would work better dog was gone anyway or so I thought. So down goes the gas up comes the dog and 3 coons later over falls the dog graveyard dead. So I asked my buddy what had happened? and told him the story and he looked at me and said "You dummy he ran out of gas"!!!!! sorry couldn't resist that.

We have had 3 dogs bit by rattlesnakes in the past - 2 of them died even with being rushed to the vet and receiving anti-venom. One lived 4 days, started eating again and then died. Here they don't even offer the vaccine because it was not initially approved for the eastern diamond back. The vaccine has been modifed, updated, etc but our closeminded vets are still not interested. It makes so no since as they could make a fortune off of people like me. Living in an area of the south that is infested with rattlers I would vaccine all my dogs if I had that option. It can't hurt, right? After so many snake bites we just quit hunting here once the temps get over 80. Rather keep my favorite hound alive if it means keeping him in a kennel 6 months out of the year.

Ever give any thought to snake proofing your dogs? Mike Leonard gave a little demonstration over on shade tree website years ago. He uses it on hounds and bird dogs.

in Texas, you can get the snake vaccine. It is made from Western Diamondback venom, and should work real well ffor you out there. Here in GA., we can get the shots for about 25.00 per shot, and it takes a series of 3 to complete, then once per year after that. It does help with most all poisonous snakes here, with that Eastern being the acception. We give it to ours with some sucess, but we do keep the shovel ready, in case of a big eastern bite. Shovel is also handy in cleaning up after me, when i almopst step on one.

Vaccine cost in Texas

Here, the cost is $30 for 2 shots given 30 days apart. If the vaccine is mailed in a cold pack, I'm sure there's a postage charge.
I can give you the name & phone number of the Vet if you send me an email.

Any of the places you'd recomend near there? I know that's the eastern edge of hill country.

I hauled 6 dogs this morning to the vet for their Rabies shot and it totally slipped my mine about asking the vet about buying some dexamethasone. Soon as I was home unloading them, I remembered, aint that the way it works.

Besides the vets, is there a place that dexamethasone can be ordered from?
