Your thoughts on Den Trees.

In Fl we have den trees like everyone else. However we very seldom tree on one. Just every now and then. However I have started to tree on more than I care to. I think it can speak to a problem with the dogs tracking ability. What is your opinion on den trees and perhaps treeing on more than you normally do. Dogs treed on 4 den trees last night out of 5 trees made. I don't think that is good so honest opinion even a negative one is appreciated.

Spent years adjusting my opinion, still evolving,
1. Squirrel
2.Back tracking
3.Too much tree bred into them
Lot of other possibilities, the important first step, accepting one has a problem, if someone is pleasure hunting,
Probably can live with it.

I agree with what Jason has posted.
If the dog ran a good track with some distance and trees a den that's fine it happens. I'm not going to pet him up but ok. Pop ups on dens forget it. Probably going to put a boot on its back side.

The thermal using craze seems to have slowed down.Will a thermal device show a hotspot in a den tree?

Pam that's what has me confused. The once or twice I saw this in the past. The tracks getting to the den were not good and obviously a backtrack in my mind. These seem to be decent tracks.
George the thermal craze is alive and well down here and I won't leave home without it. Lol. Actually didn't think to use it at the den tree.
George we have a thermal with magnet mount on the roof of the truck. It makes traveling from turnout to turnout fun seeing what you would normally miss on the road ahead of you. The other night we saw two coon messing around when we first entered the club. We went on and made a few drops and came back there about 3 hours later. Put out a young dog and let her work their tracks for a while. She got real close to one I saw up with the thermal but never settled on the tangled mess the coon was in. But felt good about her effort.

Bill is right.
The sows have kittens and do not stray too far from the dens. Can't blame the dog for treeing where the coon went up.

Mr Conkey or anyone with the experience.Which thermal seems to be the best for a coonhunter?

Most of the coons we tree are in softwood trees...spruce,fur,hemlock or pine. I seen more dens trees in Ohio in a weekend then I'd see here in a season but it does happen. More so in the rut or when sows have kits. If my dogs was just falling treed on dens I'd question what they were doing but if they're running good tracks into dens I can't fault the dog for that. Coon went up the tree how does the dog know there's a hole in that fork 15feet up. Having said that I check all my dogs to make sure they run tracks the right way and won't keep one that cant naturally tell which way a track is goin.

Out of 100 trees I might look at 5-10 dens and half of those the dog likely run the guts outa one a half mile to get treed on that den so I know he's there.

The sow and kittens is what I was thinking and giving the dogs the benefit of the doubt. Which is something I don't generally do. I have an 11 year that I Am breaking out of retirement to see what he thinks about the situation.

To answer the thermal. I really like the AGM product. The Tiapan model. They have a 10, 15 and 19. Many are trying the 10 for coon only. Picture just not as clear but you can definitely see the game in the tree. That's 800. Then the one I use is the Tiapan 15. Great for searching the tree and doing videos. That is just under 1300. Now my partner Corey uses his for coon and also coyotes and game at several hundred yards. Uses the tiapan19. Now I can see a long ways with the 15 also but the 19 is nice but overkill for just Coonhunting. It is 1700.
You can go on FB to conkeys outdoors and there is a video we did last week. Think there is a coon and hog in it we spotted from the road.

I would check a thermal out but in TN its illegal to use one at night while in posession of a firearm if im correct.I bet they are fun.Maybe theyll change the rules.

Dens

It depends on what type of year and what dog your hunting I witnessed a redbone tree about 6 dens in 2 nights and raccoons were harvested in all trees using a chainsaw to cut small holes in each tree this was up in the hills red oak timber and yes this red dog was a gr nt ch.

I’m always suspicious of a den tree unless a dog has worked the track up from a cold track into a good running track and slams the tree. Then I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt so they say!

Three days ago I watched a momma coon with a baby in her mouth, run across the yard and go into the woods about a 100 yds, and go into a small den tree. Yesterday one dog got loose around 4 o'clock pm and that's where she ended up treeing

Bruce, we've seen hot den trees with thermals in the past. Hopefully the one I ordered from you yesterday shows the heat instead of cold dens.

April and may in my country I don’t mind seeing a dog on a den...July and august they better not be making a habit of it. They is sows in and out of them dens, coming out to drink water, get a worm, crawfish whatever they may find. They is also sows moving kittens...basically it’s that time of year i can’t fault the dog.
When it’s hot I can’t help but think laying on a limb outside the den is where the Coon should be. Not on the inside.

If you're seeing a large percentage of the coons your dog trees when there's no den, treeing on a den tree occasionally shouldn't be a concern.

Most incorrect dens are probably in February

Just before n after during breeding when tut has them moving constantly!!! In n out up and down and stinky!!

Other than that you just need to know what your dog is and be honest with it!

If you are comp. hunting , again be honest and Hope you have a goodSqwaller in hand or capable honest cast member that is a good sport and make your coon move! It’s fun winning a cast with a dog that knows which den is occupied on nights when the coon aren’t out! Right Jon?!

Den trees

My thoughts are coon live in them, raise the young in them so sometimes a coondog is gonna tree on them.

My thought is, that there's a difference between residual scent and live coon scent. An accurate dog knows the difference.
