When I lived in Michigan and skinned coon in the woods I preferred the Schrade Old Timer trapper, Model 770T. The knife is light in weight and sharpens up really easily. The downside is that it dulls pretty easily when skinning around the head. Bone will dull a knife quickly. But, I always carried a small sharpener and sharpened the knife after skinning a couple of coon. I like Buck knives. They may hold the edge longer but they are also harder to get that edge on. The Schrade will shave the hairs off your arms with a few strokes on the sharpener. JMO.

The havalon is the best thing since sliced bread especially for skinning coon !!!, no sharpening razor sharp and gets dull swap it out and put another blade on it !!!! The knife comes with like 15 blades and you can buy another 100 inserts for like 7$ so very inexpensive and I can usually knock 3 hides off before changing blades out !!!!watch your fingers cause you can lose one really quick with a hhavalon !!! Bout 38$

I really like the Knives of Alaska Cub Bear. So long as you're not trying to cut trees down and throwing it into the dirt constantly, it will hold an edge for a very long time. Be prepared for some sticker shock though, it's a $70 knife.

Case

Muskrat & trapper both excellent skinning knifes.

I like this one...keeps a good edge, is light and small but has a nice handle you can get a good grip on. I think it's been discontinued by Buck, but there are plenty available online. If I remember right it's called the Ergo Hunter Caper, for $30.00 it's hard to beat. I use it a lot for taxidermy on different animals.

Buck knives are not all American made...at one time they all were, but now, just like everything else, many of them are in fact made in China.
